Dann brauche ich nicht umziehen. :]

Lusaka - The United Nations' refugee agency has made a contingency plan in anticipation of thousands of Zimbabwean refugees flee their country's worsening political and economic situation, an official said on Sunday.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) chief, Antonio Guterres, said the contingency plan on Zimbabwe had been developed in readiness for any influx of refugees to neighbouring countries.

He said over three million Zimbabwean have so far left their country even though only a limited number have applied for asylum in neighbouring countries.

"Many Zimbabweans who are leaving that country are in need of humanitarian assistance even though they have not asked for asylum," said Guterres, who is in Zambia to assess the refugee situation.

"It is our wish that the problems in Zimbabwe will be solved. We have no mandate to intervene but we are discussing with the humanitarian community to see how we can help," Guterres told reporters.

Some 1 000 Zimbabwean refugees have entered Zambia, according to official immigration figures.....die anderen kommen bach RSA. 8o

  • Table Mountain to be patrolled

    2007-8-27 12:04

    Cape Town

Table Mountain will be patrolled by police and guards from SANParks after a spate of muggings at the popular tourist spot, the Western Cape's community safety department said on Monday.

On Thursday a meeting would be held to discuss further security measures after at least 18 muggings were reported between January and August 2007.

The department believes that a suicide in the area about two weeks ago, may have been a person suspected of being behind the muggings.

"The police said they were looking for that person because they had information that could link that person to a series of muggings," department spokesperson Makhaya Mani said.

    'No reason to panic' :D

The MEC for finance, Lynn Brown, said that from a tourist perspective "there is no reason to panic".

Safety MEC Leonard Ramatlakane dismissed calls for the deployment of the army on Table Mountain.

"No tourist would be comfortable in seeing army personnel with rifles walking in their sight as if there was a war."

He called on visitors to the mountain to walk in groups, avoid walking alone, and to stay within sight of other people.

"By choosing to climb alone makes you vulnerable to opportunistic muggings," he said.

  • Work stops at CT 2010 stadium

    2007-8-27 13:44

    Cape Town

Workers at Cape Town's 2010 World Cup stadium have gone on strike, bringing construction to a standstill. :D

"The entire workforce has downed tools," Murray and Roberts project director Andrew Fenton told Sapa on Monday afternoon.

He said about 800 workers were employed on the site.

Negotiations were underway with union representatives to try to address the workers' problems "as quickly and amicably as possible".

Fenton said this would be done "in the next day or so".

Earlier, City of Cape Town spokesperson Pieter Cronje told Sapa the strike was "essentially a dispute about allowances".

It had started on Monday morning.

"We are confident the contractor will resolve the problem soon, and that construction will resume," Cronje said. ;( ;(

Name changes make us African !!

    '2007-8-31 07:46

    Cape Town

President Thabo Mbeki said in Parliament on Thursday that name changes for South African cities and towns allowed the country to move closer to its African identity, SABC television news reported.

"In some instances these [unchanged] names give the impression that South Africa is an European outpost rather than a truly African country."

Mbeki called on Members of Parliament to work together on name change issues to more fairly reflect South Africa's culture, said the SABC.

Earlier this week, Tshwane politicians got embroiled in a war of words over a Pretoria High Court ruling that provisionally halted Tshwane metro council plans to replace the name Pretoria with Tshwane on road signs.

    Tshwane row

At the beginning of August, the metro council confirmed it planned to replace "Pretoria" roadsigns with the words "Tshwane" or "City of Tshwane".

The Freedom Front Plus and AfriForum then went to court and were granted an urgent interim interdict against the name change.

After the court ruling, Tshwane mayor Gwen Ramakgopa apparently called for the parties that dragged the council to court to resign from the council.

"We have embraced the Voortrekker Monument, Die Stem as a component of the new National Anthem, the statue of Paul Kruger and many other Afrikaner symbols in spite of the painful history that subjugated and denied us our humanity," Ramakgopa said.

Tshwane region ANC secretary Blanco Mabaso warned that opposition parties should "be glad that there still is a neighbourhood with the name Pretoria.

Do not tempt the ANC (or) we will change that as well," he said. X(

Tshwane Metro Council DA leader Fred Nel said Mabaso's statement "shines big red warning lights for democracy in South Africa".

FF Plus chairperson in the greater Pretoria region Willie Spies said the ANC reaction to the court ruling was "infantile" and revealed a
"Mugabe mentality of the local ANC".

    This is 'scandalous ANC racism'

    2007-9-5 09:39

    Pretoria -

The Tshwane metro council will in future refuse to do small business transactions with white businesses.

The council's internal purchase division received this order last week.

Kiba Kekana, the council's municipal manager, last month approved a report determining that no white businesses may in future be considered when the council purchased goods for less than R30 000. The same applied to tenders.

Beeld obtained a copy of the report which was approved by Kekana on August 6.

    'This is no joke'

The changes were applicable from September 1.

According to the report, only small and medium-sized businesses "exclusively in the possession of black people" which were on the council's data basis would be considered.

Quotations must be obtained from at least three different service providers.

The report also suggested that delegation of power regarding the buying of goods must be recalled after the council's new alternative service delivery structure started on July 1.

A council official who wanted to remain anonymous for fear of losing his job, said white businesses were approved in the past if their quotations were cheaper.

"We were told last week to buy only from black businesses. I paid between R6 000 and R7 000 more for goods to comply with the new requirements.

"This is going to become an expensive order," he predicted.

The report indicated that an "alternative report" by Hamilton Hhlom, the executive director of acquisitions, must be approved when three quotations cannot be obtained and they were forced to make use of a white business's services.

The owner of a company who had been doing business with several departments of the council for the past 15 years, said he would have to close his company's doors immediately.

"At first I thought it was a joke when I heard the rumours. It's not a joke when you realise it is the end of you business. What must I tell my empoyees?"

Natasha Michael, the chief whip of the DA, said the party was shocked to find out about the report.

"The council is doing business with several black economic empowerment businesses. Years of experience will be ignored."

According to Michael it was not the national legislature's aim to isolate certain individuals on racist grounds.

"It's simply to set straight previous imbalances. The report will lead to new imbalances."

Conrad Beyers, FF+ council member, described the decision as scandalous ANC racism.

"The ANC are crossing all barriers of reasonability. It's all about ideologies and even people who earn their bread and butter suffer on the grounds of race."

The council did not react to enquiries made by Beeld for comment on the story.

  • Girl, 9, raped by robber

    2007-9-3 20:59

Johannesburg - A nine-year-old girl has been raped by a robber who broke into her mother's house in Monument Park, Pretoria police said.
Captain Tessa Jansen said two men in their 20s broke into a 35-year-old woman's house around 01:00 on Monday.

They gained access by breaking a window and once inside they threatened the woman at knife-point.

"One of the robbers forced the woman into her car and made her drive to a nearby ATM to withdraw money. However, it is not known if she did withdraw any money," said Jansen.

The robber who remained at the house raped the woman's nine-year-old daughter.

"While the robber and the woman were at the ATM, the other robber raped the woman's daughter and when the two returned from the ATM, the robbers loaded electrical appliances into the woman's car."

She was forced to drive the two to a spot in Monument Park where the robbers left the car with the stolen appliances.

Police were investigating charges of rape and house robbery, said Jansen.

  • Gunmen hit on Gauteng school

    2007-9-6 00:11

Johannesburg - Gunmen have stormed into a school, ordering matriculants writing an accounting prelim exam to lie down on the floor of the hall.

The 54 matric pupils and four staff members of the Oxford Combined School in Kempton Park were held at gunpoint while the school was being robbed.

A pastoral counsellor spoke to the matriculants on Wednesday.

School principal Pierre de Lange said the children "came off scot-free, thank the Lord".

    Someone beating school secretary

The robbers made off with about R7 000 and two cellphones.

De Lange and his deputy, Ann de Villiers, were supervising the exam at about 13:20 on Wednesday in a hall adjacent to the office block.

He heard a noise in the office.

While he was on his way there, he heard someone beating Elizabeth Sithole, the school secretary.

De Lange said he saw a man carrying a pistol, hitting and forcing Sithole under a table.

De Lange, who recently underwent a hip replacement operation, was beaten with his crutch, thrown down and kicked.

Meanwhile an armed man entered the hall through a side door and told De Villiers and the pupils to lie down.

De Villiers said she didn't know where she got the strength from, but she kept on speaking to the children and telling them "to lie still."

    Overpowered the guard

"The two men I saw were very self-assured. They swore and asked: 'Where's the money?'"

De Lange said the men apparently gained access to the premises by overpowering the guard at the gate and forcing him, with a firearm jammed in the small of his back, to walk through to the school entrance.

Luckily the incident took place "about five minutes before the pupils were supposed to hand in their exam papers," De Lange said.

They will not rewrite the exam.

  • Condom scammers to be punished

    2007-9-6 18:25

Johannesburg - South Africa's government said on Thursday that those allegedly involved in a recent scam that led to the recall of 20 million suspected faulty condoms would be brought to justice. ;( ;( :D

"All those implicated in the scam will face the full force of the law," government spokesperson Themba Maseko said while briefing journalists on the outcome of the weekly cabinet meeting, held on Wednesday.

"Cabinet expressed disquiet about the corruption and fraud that led to the distribution of faulty condoms which may have exposed individuals to the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases," he said, according to Sapa news agency.

Three South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) employees appeared in court last month in connection with the scam, after a scandal which saw safety certificates allegedly issued for the defective contraceptives.

They are currently out on bail and due to appear in court again on October 10, Sapa said.

The health ministry said that all 20 million of the condoms so far supplied by Zalatex as part of a government-funded distribution programme were being recalled "as a precautionary measure to ensure maximum safety of the public".

Zalatex and the condoms' producers Latex Surgical Products (LSP) had been hired by the government to supply about 80 million condoms.

South Africa has the second highest number of HIV patients in the world after India.

  • Attackers were 'faceless hyenas

    '2007-9-8 22:36

    Johannesburg

Three people have been arrested for "ritual murders" in Pella, in the North West, Premier Edna Molewa announced on Saturday.
"...There is strong evidence linking them to several criminal activities in the area," she said in congratulating the police. ;(

Molewa said a 17-year-old's body missing its tongue and genitals was found dumped near a road in Pella, in Madikwe, on Thursday.

His death followed the recent mutilation of a 13-year-old near the same village.

"This act of barbarism cannot go unpunished as it tears the moral fabric of our communities and society," said Molewa.

"This is the work of faceless hyenas that prowl upon innocent people.

"These wild animals have shown no respect for human life. They should know they will never evade the clutches of justice forever", she said.

Molewa expressed confidence that the police would work tirelessly :D to root out "this inhuman practice that threatens to entrench itself in some of our communities".

    Gunmen rob Carnival City casino

    2007-9-9 10:04

    Johannesburg

A armed gang of about 15 men shot and wounded several people in the Carnival City casino on Johannesburg's East Rand shortly after midnight on Sunday, police said
    .
"A gang of between 12 and 15 armed suspects stormed Carnival City and robbed cashiers and customers," said captain Jethro Mtshali.

They fired shots inside, wounding several people and assaulted one customer with a firearm.

The gang also robbed patrons of cellphones and wallets.

Police confronted them at the exit as they tried to make their getaway in several cars and a shootout ensued. Two police officers were wounded and were in a stable condition.

An undisclosed amount of cash was taken and the men were still on the run.

"Later a minibus and a BMW were found abandoned in Rondebult, Boksburg," said Mtshali.
