VANCOUVER (CP) -- Barclays Capital has committed US$140 million in financing to help Yukon Zinc Corp. [TSX-V:YZC] develop its Wolverine zinc-copper project in southeast Yukon, the junior resource company said Monday.
Vancouver-based Yukon said Barclays has provided a loan commitment letter for the project financing, which is subject to customary conditions and the raising of enough equity capital to fully finance and complete the project.
Harlan Meade, Yukon Zinc's president and CEO, told a conference call with analysts that Barclays' investment was a confirmation of the technical merits of the project and a vote of confidence in the management team.
''The Wolverine project has overcome many obstacles along the way to a production decision reinforcing the adage that mines are made and not found,'' Meade said.
''It is not often that a bank such as Barclays agrees to lend US$140 million to a company having a market capitalization of C$75 million. This is a huge vote of confidence for the project and Yukon Zinc particularly given the current state of the financial markets.''
The project is forecast to cost about US$250 million to develop including working capital, financing fees, debt service during construction and US$25 million for funding of potential cost overruns.
Investors cheered the financing agreement and boosted the stock by 10%.
Yukon shares closed up two cents at 22 cents on the TSX Venture Exchange as 3.9 million shares traded hands.
Among the conditions of the Barlcays loan is that Yukon Zinc is able to secure the rest of the financing needed to build its mine.
''The company is working with a group of potential underwriters to raise the remaining capital of approximately US$110 million which is expected to be a mix of subordinated debt and equity,'' Meade said.
This loan has a term of seven and a half years and will be secured against the assets of the project.
Barclays Capital is the investment banking division of Barclays Bank PLC and a leading provider of financing to the mining sector.
''Wolverine is an exciting project for Yukon Zinc, and Barclays is pleased to partner with the company in its development,'' said Grant Willis, co -head of mining and metals at Barclays Capital.
Meade said the company plans its first concentrate shipments from Wolverine to be by early to mid 2009.
In the first three years of production, the Wolverine project is forecast to produce 116 million pounds of zinc, 10 million pounds of copper and 13 million pounds of lead in concentrates containing 4.9 million ounces of silver and 20,200 ounces of gold.
In update of the project, Meade said preparation of a new campsite was nearly complete, while construction of an access road has reached the project
''Work will continue over the next couple of weeks to upgrade certain sections for equipment haulage,'' he said.
In June, Yukon Zinc raised C$5 million in a brokered private placement financing of 16.1 million flow-through common shares to help fund the Wolverine project.
The money was to be used for underground portal maintenance and related support costs and site access road development.
