Something strange is happening in the silver markets. While the silver price has crashed along with gold – not in itself an unusual occurrence – the biggest of the silver ETFs have been seeing very large inflows, while the gold ETFs are seeing sales.

A brief mention on silver: between Thursday 18th and yesterday, the equivalent of 48,265,000 ounces were swapped for 9,630 Comex December contracts (Exchange for Physical, or EFP). On Tuesday the volume of futures and options was exceptionally high, Open Interest fell 5,501 contracts, and 2,489 contracts were exchanged for physical. Could it be that this silver was required to be delivered to other markets, such as Shanghai, where stocks are depleted and silver is trading at a price premium?
Could it be that the acceleration of demand for silver eagles is indicative of the demand for physical silver at these low prices? If so, it is an indication that Comex is pricing silver futures too low to reflect genuine demand, and the price will struggle to go lower.

According to Hug, as the European Central Bank recently announced its plans for quantitative easing and Chinese officials add more stimulus, the global economy may improve enough to spur industrial demand for precious metals, which accounts for more than half of silver consumption, but only a small part of overall gold demand.
“From an industrial perspective, and even from an investment perspective, silver at these prices I think will garner more demand than gold and tighten this ratio up,” concluded Hug

Investors are getting forced into riskier and riskier activities. They’re going further out the yield curve to increase their income, and remember that debt instrument pricing is set by the delta between their yield and the yield on the U.S. 10-year treasury.
As an example, in the junk debt markets (which more and more people are being forced into), if the median yield is 7%, and the yield on the U.S. 10-year treasury is 2.7%, the delta is 4.3%, something like that. If the yield on the U.S. 10-year treasury were to go from 2.7% to 3.5%, the delta (which is what the pricing is based on) would decline by about 25% or 30%, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see a commensurate impact on the debt markets, meaning a pretty ugly decline, and I could see that spilling over into the equities markets.
So I would tell readers with regard to the general securities markets, please don’t buy the entire market. Buy individual securities where you believe the business will grow of its own volition for old-fashioned reasons, like the company servicing its customers well and as a consequence of that, beating its competitors well. Don’t buy the market. Buy individual stocks
