    Small town shocked by murder

    2006-10-09

Jongensfontein - Residents of this small town near Stilbaai were deeply shocked by the murder of a well-known businessman at the weekend.
Johannes Marais, 56, better known as Basie, was found next to his bakkie on a building site next to his home in Compass Lock in Jongensbaai about 03:00 on Saturday.

"He was apparently hit over the head with a blunt object and seemed to have died at the scene," said police spokesperson captain Malcolm Pojie.

Apparently Marais and his wife Ruby were in bed when the telephone rang at about 01:30. An unknown person informed him that somebody was breaking into the hangar at Stilbaai airfield, where he kept his small aircraft.

    No sign of burglary

According to Marais's wife he left for the airfield, said Pojie.

When he failed to return after about two hours, she called the police.

The police went to the airfield, but found no sign of a burglary. They returned to the couple's home in Jongensbaai, where they noticed Marais's bakkie on the neighbouring property.

They found his body next to the bakkie.

"Somebody must have been waiting for him and hit him over the head," said Pojie. "It seems as if nothing had been taken and the police have not yet been able to establish a motive for the murder," he said.

Residents of this town of about 280 inhabitants were shocked by the murder. "People say it seems like a revenge murder," said one resident on condition of anonymity on Sunday. "If the motive was theft, something would have been stolen. Marais apparently did have an enemy or two, or so they say."

    Marais was acting as owner-builder.

"Everbody knew Basie and his yellow aircraft was a familiar sight,"said Barbara de Jager from Jongensfontein. "It is a tremendous shock for everybody."

Marais was the owner of Kloof Auto Centre. His wife owns a clothing store in Stilbaai.

Attempts to contact her failed on Sunday.

Marais is survived by two children from his first marriage, Desire, 35, and Sarel, 37, his wife, and a daughter from her first marriage, Jessica, 23, reported Rapport on Sunday.

    Hijacked wife 'traumatised

    '2006-10-09

Cape Town - Well-known Western Cape businessman and politician Chris Nissen's wife Charlene and his sister-in-law, Vida Muller, were hijacked and robbed in the driveway of their house in Rondebosch-East in broad daylight on Saturday.
The women were unscathed but severely traumatised by the incident during which three men with firearms attacked them in their Polo Playa at about 16:30.

According to the family spokesperson Zenzile Khoisan, the women were "violently pulled out of their car and thrown down on the ground. Their rings were ripped off their fingers."

"They remained calm and handed over the car keys, which probably saved them."

The attackers fled in the car, taking the women's handbags and credit cards, cash, identity documents and groceries.

Khoisan said the family felt more should be done to contain violent crimes. Police spokesperson inspector Bernadine Steyn confirmed the incident. She said a case of armed robbery was being investigated by Claremont police.

The suspects were still at large.

Anybody with information was requested to phone Stop Crime at 08600 10111.
