REPEATING 1978
By Stephen Wellman
June 13, 2007
What did the US government(Congress) and the Federal Reserve Bank do in 1978 to stem inflation? First of all you need to get a "reality check" by looking at two charts. The chart labeled CHART #1 shows the spot price of gold from 1968 to 2006 in non-inflation adjusted US Dollars. The second chart, CHART #2, shows the same gold price adjusted for inflation based on 2005 dollar values. You'll notice that the price of gold really started taking off like a rocket in 1978 and so was inflation.
CHART#1

CHART#2

Now I submit as evidence a ninety-one(91)page document from the Feds FOMC meeting dated January 17, 1978.
What you will read are some of the identical issues facing the US economy now. The only difference is that instead of billion dollar debt we now have trillion dollar debt. You will be amazed to see that none of the issues have really changed. None of the politics have changed except the names and faces. Back then the Chairman of the FED was Burns, Paul Volcker was Vice Chairman. As a result of all their efforts in the early 1980s consumer
interest rates topped 18% and gold skyrocketed to $850USD. A stunning failure by the FED to say the least!
Link to 1978 FOMC: http://www.federalreserve.gov/…/1978/19780117meeting.pdf
Here are some highlights of what you will read, which may sound familiar ...
- Taxpayer bailouts of corporations and banks like Penn Central.
- The US government(taxpayer)acting as lender of "last resort" guaranteed loans.
- US dollar interventions against foreign currency exchanges.
- Trade deficits with Japan and Germany totaling $40billion.
- Consumer spending driven recovery.
- Consumer based GNP(Gross National Product).
- Weighted CPI data.
- Worrisome inflation.
- Real estate bubble fueled by credit.
- Lower US savings rates(1975 rate=10% by 1977 rate =5.25%).
- Cutting income tax and raising payroll tax resulting in net increased taxes.
- Tax cuts used to goose GNP.
- Revenue drag (inflation boosts tax revenues by 100% from 1978 to 1979).
US government spending excesses.
I will leave you with one important statement from FED Chairman Burns regarding his views on the US public and how the public copes with monetary inflation during 1978.
CHAIRMAN BURNS:
Next I must say that the spurt in consumer spending which has made some people happy has disturbed me. It is being financed in very large part by credit. We’re having something close to an explosion of credit in the consumer area. Installment credit and mortgage credit have been used in large part to finance consumer spending. I believe that the spurt will not continue and I certainly hope so. On home building, I’m with the staff or more optimistic than the staff. The significant point I think has been mentioned. You know, the American public, in contrast to some or many of our politicians--perhaps most of them--is very deeply concerned about inflation.
People all over the country have been asking themselves the question: What can I do to protect my family? What can I do to protect my children, my family, and myself against the ravages of inflation? And gradually the thought has evolved and is spreading rapidly that, on the negative side, putting money in the bank or a savings and loan account is no protection. Buying bonds, Treasury bonds or corporate bonds, is no protection. Buying common stocks is no protection. It used to be a major protection but it no longer is. Then what is left? Well, gold or paintings. But the average man cannot invest in gold; he doesn’t know how. It’s not something he’s accustomed to. Likewise with paintings.
What will he turn to? Well, there is farm real estate, a remarkable record there. But the average man doesn’t know how to buy farm real estate. He realizes that location can make an enormous difference. But there’s one thing the average man is capable of doing. If he doesn’t have a home, he can buy a home. If he already has a home, he can buy another. The average man is also capable of judging neighborhoods. All he has to do is get into an automobile or walk and he can locate areas where the prospect of maintaining good conditions in the neighborhood or some improvement are pretty good over the next ten years or twenty years. People can do that.
And they’re doing it in increasing numbers. It’s surprising to me. I hear it from college professors; I hear it from young people; I hear it from my own children. The movement is spreading.
And the interest rate on mortgages? Yes, what Mr. Partee has said may well turn out to be
right, but I don’t think people are going to be deterred by an increase in mortgage interest rates of one half of one percent or even a full one percent. And the money will be available at a somewhat higher interest rate. So, I believe that this will continue. Whether that is a cause for optimism or not is something else again. We may easily get ourselves into a condition of overbuilding in this area, such as we had in 1972-73, but in the year ahead we’ll have plenty of activity in this field.END
So I have to ask again here ... WHAT HAS CHANGED? Our government "For The People And By The People" has turned over our monetary system and markets to a bunch of private bankers who have been tinkering with economics and false data and Keynesian misinformation for many decades now. ![]()
They hold meetings, FOMC meetings, now, just like back in 1978 to intervene in every fiscal aspect of our lives with the end result being
an abysmal performance record based on the purchasing power of our currency and our financial security. The end result is a decidedly more Third World lifestyle that will eventually bankrupt our financial futures as well as opportunities for our kids. I find it curious that those that create monetary inflation are trusted to resolve it.
I believe that is a conflict of interest that our Founding Fathers warned us of 200 years ago!! So in closing we are
REPEATING 1978
Victory at What Cost ?
How high will rates go over the next decade is anyone's guess but it seems clear that today's 5.25% is not high enough to retard the rate of monetary growth. The ramifications of much higher rates on an economy with such onerous debt burdens as ours are troubling. Imagine also what the effects will be for equities as borrowing becomes too expensive for private equity deals to be consummated while earnings fall under the weight of contracting G.D.P.
Since the Fed has teamed with banks to inflate the economy and money supply, they will be forced to either let inflation rates soar or raise rates to such a level that causes a recession much worse than experienced in the early 80's. I have my doubts whether the Fed has the will to stick to its mandate of price stability, but if it does, we will all find that the cost of vanquishing inflation comes at a great expense for the economy. Then the Fed, like General Pyrrhus of Epirus after an early victory against the Romans in 280 B.C., may be forced to say:
"One more victory like that will destroy us completely."
