South Africa...Thieves party at cop station

    2006-12-19 09:02

Johannesburg - A charge office full of police members and private security guards failed to stop burglars from breaking into the office of a Johannesburg police commissioner and starting a fire on the wooden floor.
Apparently the burglars also quenched their thirst with liquor from the officers' canteen.

Not even the electronic security doors in front of the office of commissioner Simon Mpembe on the seventh floor of the western wing of the Johannesburg Central police station could stop the thieves from stealing Mpemba's "treasured golden teaspoons" on Friday evening.

The burglars also took sweets from his secretary Juanita Matthysen's office drawers.

It later came to light that a burglary also took place at the Norwood police station in Patterson Road, where the burglars took the food supply of the prisoners.

At Johannesburg Central, the burglars gained entrance to Matthysen's office, which is next door to Mpemba's, by breaking a window after somehow entering through the security gate in the passage.

Investigation at a 'very sensitive stage'

Besides Mpemba's teaspoons, two Nokia cellphones, which were the property of the state, were stolen and the wall-to-wall carpet in Matthysen's office was damaged by fire.

The burglars also found their way to the officer canteen on the seventh floor of the eastern wing.

According to a reliable police source the burglars had climbed through the window of a women's toilet and over the roof of the kitchen to reach the canteen.

Cigarettes worth more than R3 000, which were locked away, also disappeared without a trace. The thieves drank some of the brandy, whiskey and rum and left the empty bottles on the bar counter.

A senior police officer smelled a rat on Saturday when he wanted to deliver a case docket at the commissioner's office.

Sergeant Sanku Tsunke, a police spokesperson, confirmed on Monday that the police were investigating both burglaries.

"No arrests have yet been made and the investigations into both cases are continuing," said Tsunke. :D

Mpemba had ordered Tsunke not to provide any more details as the investigation was at a "very sensitive stage".

Matthysen also didn't want to comment, but according to police sources sweets were stolen from her drawers.

The police also didn't want to comment on the fact that a private security firm was being paid to provide extra security around the Johannesburg Central police station.

Guards were used for access control as well as after-hour routine inspections on at least 10 floors of the building.

Very Rare Booklet: Communist Plans & Leaders for S.Africa

I decided to include the Two Phase Revolution pages, because the SACP is currently thinking of splitting away from the ANC. It seems the CIA's influence in the ANC has been strong enough to cause a split. But the split could also mean that the CIA's plans are in trouble... if President Mbeki's wing of the ANC loses to the SACP and COSATU alliance. Recently, I was chatting to a black man I know who is an avid supporter of the Jacob Zuma faction. He told me that COSATU (Congress of South African Trade Unions) is the key factor in the tripartite alliance. Dr Chris Jordaan (ex-Military Intelligence), always referred to COSATU as the "hands" of the SACP - the "doers" who make it happen on the streets. In his definition the SACP are the "brains", the ANC is the "mouth" (propaganda) and COSATU are the hands.....more

    South Africa Phumzile flights investigated

    2006-12-18 13:50

Pretoria - Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota has appointed a committee to probe costly flights by deputy president Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka and other VIPs, he announced on Monday.

The investigation would start in the first week of January and would be headed by former SA National Defence Force member Kgomotso Moroka SC and Reserve Force General Benno Smit, he said.

"It will place the public in a position where objectively the public may be able to determine whether there is a deliberate and illegal or corrupt attempt to provide what people call the gravy plane to certain individuals."

Lekota said the committee would look into all defence department aircraft charters between April 27 2004 and December 10 2006.

It would be charged with determining whether aircraft charters were efficient and cost effective.

The investigation comes after a flight which cost R4.55m to charter from Switzerland was sanctioned to take Mlambo-Ngcuka on an official visit to the United Kingdom.
It followed her R700 000 flight to the United Arab Emirates in December last year and a R75 000 flight to Sun City from Pretoria. :D

The department of defence is responsible for arranging flights for the president, deputy president, former presidents some government ministers and senior SANDF officers.

While it charters planes when the SA Air Force fleet is unable to meet demand, Lekota described the UK flight as "irregular and way out of proportion with reasonable standards".

Lekota expected the probe to take three months. He said that although the committee's full report would be available only to the defence department, its findings would be made public.

"There is limitation on information one may release... There may be things in the details that I might come to the conclusion it is not in the interest of the country to release," Lekota said.

    SAPA

more flights... :D...Don't trust a black pilot.

Beeld reported that a plane had to be flown from Switzerland to take Mlambo-Ngcuka and her entourage to the UK -- because there were not enough pilots in South Africa trained to fly the air forces' presidential jets. :D

"Earlier this year ... it became known that the three top students in training -- who happened to be white -- were not allowed to proceed with further training as fighter pilots because of the Defence Force's affirmative action requirements."

He said Lekota had assured the party last year that there were three pilots qualified to fly presidential jets and a further 12 in training.

    2006-12-18 11:51

    Cape Town

Domestic workers' wages will rise to R1 066.90 per month from this month (December) for employees working for more than 27 hours a week in the higher paid areas of South Africa, according to the sectoral determination made public by Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana on Monday.

Domestic workers in the so-called "area A" - which includes the big metropolitan cities of Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town - were earning R997.04 a month in the last year.

The rises are based on a CPIX of 5% - based on the official October figure - plus 2%, taking the rises to 7%.

Domestic workers working for 27 hours per week or less in the higher paid areas are entitled to R756.09 compared with R706.63 paid in the last year.

Employees who work for 27 hours per week or less in the lower paid areas - "area B" - will earn R613.39 compared with R573.26 paid in the last year.

Meanwhile, those who work for more than 27 hours in the lower paid areas will receive R865.54, up from R808.92, according to Mdladlana's spokesperson Mokgadi Pela.

The hourly rate in the "area A" municipal areas has risen from R5.11 to R5.47 while the weekly rate has risen from R230.10 to R246.21.

In rural areas - in "area B" - the housely rate has risen from R4.90 to R5.24, with the weekly rate from R132.3 to R141.56.

These figures will apply until November 30 next year.

So in summary, while there is reason to get upset with the gold cartel for their nefarious deeds, we should also be thanking them for making gold as cheap and undervalued as it is.

They are enabling us to dump our overvalued dollars as we earn them each month by using them to buy undervalued physical gold.
We are in effect getting more gold for our dollars, and that is indeed a pleasant situation... :]

There are other astrological conditions of interest too. For instance, the new moon in Sagittarius means that the “Sagittarius Factor” is in effect this Monday through Wednesday.

This lunar cycle tends to correspond to big price swings in precious metals and Treasuries

That is supported even further with the movement of heliocentric (not geocentric) Mercury into Sagittarius December 21 through January 2. The bottom line is that the market climate is not totally free from the Sagittarius influence for the holiday season. But more often than not, the first few days of heliocentric Mercury in Sagittarius tends to be more bullish for currencies and precious metals, and less bullish for stocks.

All in all, this should be an interesting week. It is one that is filled with a lot of geocosmic activity, but it also happens to be the pre-holiday market week, when volume tends to decline as we get closer and closer to the end of the week. In such markets, geocosmics are not always as large a factor as we are accustomed to.

    Oil:

Uranus will be in 15-20 of Pisces in 2007-2008. That’s when I anticipate Crude Oil to test or make new all-time highs – ....and then sell off back down to 20.00-40.00/barrel as new technology and consumer demand for alternative fuel sources (Saturn-Uranus opposition) starts making its mark on the economy.

    http://www.mmacycles.com/artweek.htm

As we move into 2007, the pattern will be the same. Either the Fed finally decides to implement tight monetary policies which would strengthen the US dollar and weaken all asset prices except bonds, or the Fed continues with its expansionary bias.

As Robert Prechter recently showed, gold will at least maintain its purchasing power, both in a period of high inflation and also if asset markets implode.

10 Dollar POS, 500 Dollar POG.......

Wieder gelernt und bezahlt, the university of life, life is over when the lessons are over.

    “DISMAL MONETARY SCIENCE”
CAN THE SECOND COMING OF PAUL VOLCKER
    SAVE THE DOLLAR ?
Thoughts on the eve of high level talks in Beijing

    Antal E. Fekete

    Professor

Intermountain Institute for Science and Applied Mathematics

    History replaying

One of the most frequently asked questions from my readers is the title above. Conventional gold-bug wisdom holds that in 1979 the new Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Paul Volcker, raised interest rates drastically, thereby putting an end to the galloping inflation then raging, and aborting the bull market in gold. Volcker’s high-interest policies are credited with the feat of turning the dollar back from the brink where it looked into the chasm of worthlessness, the chasm into which the French assignat, the German Reichsmark, and the Chinese yuan (of 1949 vintage) among countless other national currencies have fallen. Conventional wisdom goes on to conclude that Bernanke, hopelessly committed as he is to a regime of low interest rates, will be fired. A new chairman with the outlook and resoluteness of Volcker will be named who will repeat the feat of his tall, cigar-smoking predecessor, in saving the dollar once more in a nick of time. History will replay itself.

    Lessons of Kondratieff

My view of the events then and now is quite different. History is not made by men, tall or short; rather, events are the product of cycles, in particular, Kondratieff’s long-wave cycle (K-cycle). By that standard the situation we find ourselves in now is diametrically opposite to that thirty years ago. In 1977 the world was approaching the end of an upswing in the K-cycle that had started in 1947. It took prices and interest rates to unprecedented heights. Now we are approaching the end of a downswing in the K-cycle. As a rule turning points in the K-cycle are calamitous events, resembling a blow-off. So it was in 1979. At that time interest rates and prices were sky-rocketing and hyperinflation appeared likely. But these events were just a smoke-screen camouflaging an incipient deflation that burst on the scene unexpectedly, bringing dramatically lower interest rates, wide-spread bankruptcies, and the folding of firms that have lost pricing-power. This deflation has not run its course yet. The worst is still in store.

The replay of history in 2007 will be similar except with the opposite signature. Interest rates are still declining, and so are prices adjusted for inflation. Deflation is being imported into the United States from Japan, through the mechanism of the carry-trade. It appears to confirm and surpass Bernanke’s worst fears. Lethargy is spreading. Businessmen decline to take the loans offered at historically low rates. Production keeps contracting; unemployment may follow with a lag. We may even see, horribile dictu, some genuinely falling prices! Yet these events could be just a smoke-screen camouflaging an incipient hyper-inflation that would wipe out the dollar for once and all.

    The China-enigma

I admit that China is in the position to render these predictions worthless. She could initiate a cascading of the dollar here and now, wiping out its value before a deflationary scenario could unfold. To the extent that this is a real possibility, my deflationary predictions are, of course, conditional on the outcome of the recent negotiations in Beijing. However, I would expect that Treasury Secretary Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke would cut a deal. Most likely the deal would save the dollar from an ignominious collapse just now. The dollar would get a new lease on life. All this would be in keeping with my motto: “expect the unexpected”. The U.S. will go to any length, pay any price, and meet any challenge to defend the dollar. On the other hand China has the power, and the skill, to extort a bribe. No bribe is too high. After all, it is just a matter of printing it, Bernanke-style. Considering the alternative, it is still cheap.

This is not to suggest that China is not in an incredibly strong bargaining position. She is. Even after a complete collapse of the dollar that could cost China up to $1 trillion, her economy could emerge relatively unscathed, more so than any other economy on the face of the globe. Inflations and deflations could rage around; China could feel safe inside of a cocoon of autarky. She has done it before; she can do it again. You say that China cannot insulate herself from a world-wide depression? Oh yes, she can. By allowing the wage level to creep up, she could keep producing for her domestic markets without any major setback. China has the potential to absorb everything what she can produce domestically.

True, it is no fun to write off as worthless a $1 trillion bank account. This is why a deal between China and the U.S., vastly favorable to China, is the most likely outcome of the current negotiations under way in Beijing. It would be naive to expect that details of the deal will be revealed to the public. But we may guess that no genuine progress towards stabilization would be made.

    Bond conundrums

I think most commentators on the bond market got it wrong. They take it for granted that any new bonds issued by the U.S. Treasury will be received negatively from now on, in view of the fact that the saturation point for dollars at large, in their opinion, has now been reached. The only thing foreigners consider worse than owning dollar balances is owning dollar bonds: promises to pay dollars in the future. Yet the bond market shows irrational exuberance in the face of persistent dollar weakness, even in the face of dollar-devaluation as part of the deal now being cut in Beijing. If there has ever been a true conundrum, the bond market it is.

A typical commentary is Peter Schiff’s, dated December 8, on “So what is really holding up the bond market? It could be foreign central bank buying; Fed monetization; hedging by the mortgage industry; speculative hedge-fund strategies; a combination of all these factors; or something entirely different. However, whatever the prop may be, it will not be there forever. The longer it remains, the bigger the deluge will be when it finally gives way. The bond market is in fact a powder-keg. The fuse is lit; we just don’t know its length. But when it blows, carnage in the bond market and, by implication, in an economy addicted to low rates will be brutal.”

No, I don’t think the fuse has been lit. What then is the explanation of the mystery? It is the $400 quadrillion derivatives market growing exponentially. That’s what. It represents a latent demand for new bonds, unlimited quantities of it, so that the game of musical chairs could go on and on. Moreover, demand is further fueled by the carry trade. The carry trade sells the high-priced Japanese bonds and buys the low-priced U.S. bonds. As I have pointed out, it is the mechanism whereby deflation is imported from Japan to the United States. This arbitrage results in a narrowing of the interest-rate spread. But that spread is still far from disappearing and, as long as it is positive, the carry trade will thrive and interest rates in the U.S. will keep falling. Bond speculation on the long side of the market will continue, giving further boost to the game of musical chairs. All this means deflation, even depression. Bernanke will keep stoking its fires by printing more dollars, hoping that the new money will go into commodity speculation, ending the depression. It won’t. The new money will go into bond speculation, deepening the depression. That’s where smart money is made. In the bond market. On the long side. This is what makes the depression feed upon itself.

It is not likely, although neither is it impossible, that China will pull the rug from under the bond market. The game of musical chairs will probably go on, possibly for several more years. The sky is the limit for derivatives, and for the monetization of the U.S. government debt.

Part of that scenario is the price of gold. It will not be allowed to escape the gravity of earth, as it would do in the absence of clandestine official intervention. Although they will be able to limit the rise in the gold price, the powers-that-be will not be able to limit the rise in its volatilility. Gyrations of gold will assume galactic dimensions, increasing uncertainty in its wake. Enormous fortunes will be made — and lost — both by the bulls and the bears betting that “the trend is their friend”.

The second coming of Paul Volcker is a myth. In 1979 the United States was in a much stronger financial and economic position than it is now and it could take the strong medication of high interest rates without danger of succumbing to the ‘sudden death syndrome’.

Presently, the United States economy is on a life-supporting system. China’s hand is on the switch. Paul Volcker’s regimen of high interest rates would be tantamount to turning the switch off.

Frederic Bastiat GO GATA! Another one of those lockdown, swear word days … which turned into a crashing takedown following the London Fixes of $626.00 and $623.75. The farce goes on and on … in the same manner … and by the same people. After early strength which saw gold reach $629 in New York, Morgan Stanley began to bomb the market, offering 500 lots at a clip. $630 was defended all week as The Gold Cartel lay in wait for a Friday afternoon bomb raid. The Gold Cartel attacked early. As the day wore on, the funds were the heavy sellers and the cabal crowd were the buyers. You might like to know that 30 seconds BEFORE the CPI number was released, the euro began to sink fast. I was dead right about silver exploding, just the wrong way. Well, perhaps imploding would be more appropriate. What a farce this gold/silver mess is … make that travesty.
