Share land now, white farmers told

    2006-05-19

    Cape Town

White landowners in South Africa were challenged on Friday to start talks about sharing their land before it was too late.

"The people who are yearning for land are running out... of patience," X( senior ANC member Peter Moatshe stressed in the National Council of Provinces on Friday.

Moatshe, who chairs parliament's land and environmental affairs select committee, questioned the pace at which government was moving on land reform.

"This government is negotiating with those who have land. But those who have land are unwilling... to comply with the... sentiments of the Freedom Charter, that we shall share this land.

"The Freedom Charter does not say those who came must go. What... it says is white and black in this country must share the land.
The land belongs to the people of this country !

"Therefore we make this challenge to those who have the land, that they shall make up their minds, otherwise it will be too late," he warned.

    Legacy from 1652

Speaking during the agriculture and land affairs budget vote debate, he said the threat to land ownership had arrived in Africa with white colonialists.

"The white birds which were crossing the sea to South Africa and the continent of Africa - that was the beginning of the threat towards land.

"It's where it starts. These are facts that cannot be disputed by anybody. The question of land becomes imperative, and that's why we are debating this budget vote today.

"It is an endeavour to address this legacy from 1652. It is therefore very important that those who have the land, and those who do not have the land, must come to a point of agreement. That the land shall be shared by those who occupy it.

"These imbalances cannot be allowed to continue for ever and ever and ever," he said.

The budget being voted on was a "drop in the ocean" towards addressing the land question.

    Satisfying the masses

Speaking in the House immediately after Land Affairs Minister Thoko Didiza, he said there were still great imbalances when it came to land, 12 years after the advent of democracy.

"Are we really moving at a speed that will satisfy the masses of this country? Are we not going to be caught up between those who have the land, and those who thirst for land? We have to speed up this process."

Moatshe cited the Bible in his plea for faster land reform.

"The people of this country are becoming much more politicised on the land question, and therefore the land must come back to the rightful owners in the spirit of Leviticus, Chapter 25."

This, he said, stated "the land must go back to the rightful owners".

If government sought to achieve a 30% distribution of land by 2015 to previously disadvantaged people, the pace of land reform would have to be considerably accelerated, he said.... End

..... and ones they have it they will fuck it up like in Zimbabwe !
Dann noch vielleicht die Minen und sonst noch was, dass sind ja Aussichten hier. ?(

A nationwide strike on Thursday could have cost the economy over R2bn and defeated the core purpose of the protest, economists and business said.

Economist Richard Downing said he could not see how the strike would alleviate poverty and unemployment.

Officially South Africa had an unemployment rate of about 26%. The unofficial figure was closer to 42%. 8o

He added that the cost of labour should also be looked at, as SA could not compete with countries such as China which were "very productive in terms of labour". He said unions made constant wage claims which were above the inflation rate, making it difficult for businesses to keep up.

"If the cost per employee is too high then less people will be employed."

He estimated that about R1.7bn had been lost on Thursday in the production of goods and services. He said this loss of capacity would lead to job losses.

    We are in consolidation mode:

From the high close on May 11th prices have closed down 5% as of May 15th. The declines from the comparable examples have been 9%, 9%, 12%, 23% and 8%. Throwing out the anomaly of 23% in 1980 we can estimate good targeted support for gold over the next month of consolidation to be present between $633 and $662.

    Gold/Silver - What can I say?

I gave you a price target of 728.60 on February 9th, expecting to see it hit by late summer. So much for late summer! We hit the target of 728.00 intraday on Thursday, May 11th, and then exceeded it intraday, reaching 732.00 the next day. The question is, where does the price of gold (and silver) go from here? Is the rally over? Will the long awaited correction finally make an appearance? And if so, how low is low? All good questions and, in my opinion, all quite premature! I am going to tell you the same thing here that I told you on February 9th, unless gold has undergone some here-to-fore unperceived change in character, we have not yet seen the top. It is also worth remembering that neither have we seen a close above strong resistance at 728.60! We've seen a test and we still have another test or two coming in my opinion. In the meantime, a 5% to 8% correction over a period of three to four days would be nothing out of the ordinary! That translates to a drop of +/- 60.75 and a test of good support at 671.25 in the JUNE GOLD futures contract. Such a test could easily occur without doing any technical damage to the current bullish gold picture.

Keine Ahnung wo und wie du lebst in Bali, seh das nicht persoenlich.

So was ist wieder passiert ?:

The past 24 hours has to be the wildest I have seen in 8 years. Gold was hit in the Access market last evening, went berserk in the early Asian market and into the early London hours (rising more than $22), was then clobbered by "you know who" (for all their devious reasons) and still managed to close modestly higher. However, like always the past few nights, these cabal cretins then took gold down $5 in the Access Market THE MINUTE it opened this afternoon.

These people who continue to STEAL your money are among the worst of humankind … in my book. Most of them, if they were poor and convicted common thieves, would be in jails. May we find a way to send some of them exactly there.”

From The Hightower Report, Futures Analysis and Forecasting:

“The gold market seemed to have the best fundamental and technical setup early in the session and that setup gradually decayed throughout the session. While the Dollar was down and was mostly weak during the session, the outlook for the economy seemed to soften and the Fed still seemed to be content to battle inflation if prices continue to rise. On the other hand, they seemed to worry over asset price vulnerability (real estate) and while that might increase uncertainty and prompt flight to quality buying of gold, the market also detects a bit of recessionary concern in the dialogue Thursday.

As mentioned in the mid day coverage today, the silver market was the weakest precious metals market early and in the end it was given an additional push lower by a late failure in the copper market. Fortunately for the bull camp in silver, the equity market held together and kept concerns of severe economic slowing to a minimum. Some traders noted a record quarterly production tally by a Canadian silver mining company and with silver prices already lower on the session that seemed to validate the recent selling pattern. In short, most traders suggest that the key market to watch for direction in the silver market is the equity market.”

Oil dropped to under $68 in morning New York trade, but it then climbed higher heading into afternoon trade and ended up near $70 as geopolitical concerns over < st1:country-region w:st="on">Iran and Nigeria and supply concerns heading into hurricane season encouraged buyers to enter the market.

The U.S. dollar index fell on mixed economic data and various fedspeak that overall did not give a clear indication as to whether the fed will continue to raise interest rates or not.

Treasuries gained on mixed economic data and on words from Fed President Lacker that the fed would keep the mission of containing inflation its “primary focus.”

The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P traded mostly slightly higher on easing inflation fears after yesterday’s large sell off that was prompted by raised inflation fears, but all three indices then dropped off markedly in the last hour of trade and ended with notable losses as inflat ion fears were somewhat reignited.

Among the big names making news in the market today were Dell, Gap, Burger King, Barnes & Noble, Mittal and Arcelor, Sears, Merck, and SFBC International.
