'Ghost towns' in the Cape :(

    2006-03-01

Power outages plaguing the Western Cape have left shopping malls and businesses looking like "ghost towns".

Cape Town - Maynard Mall in Wynberg Cape Town is normally a bustling hive of a shopping centre. There's normally not enough space to walk, let alone shop.
But the power outages that have been plaguing the Western Province have left the mall looking like a ghost-town.

"It's dead quiet," said one shopper who braved the darkness.

The shopper who wished to remain anonymous went looking for supplies for the next outage. "There wasn't a battery in site," she said.

"It's all in darkness, the shop assistants are just sitting around in the mall because what can they do?"

    Passengers stranded

Meanwhile, the hundreds of thousands of passengers who used the train service on Tuesday had to contend with delays of up to three hours.

Metrorail urged commuters to find alternative transport.

On Wednesday, an election day and public holiday, it looked as if everything was back to normal but the transport utility could not make any promises.

"There are no train delays at present but that might change later in the day," said one call operator at Metrorail's customer helpline.

Eskom originally promised that by last week Wednesday, the power cuts would end. But for the rest of the week they continued.

It then pledged that by that Saturday, there' be no more outages and full power would be restored to the province. And then, on Tuesday morning this week Capetonians woke up once again without electricity.

    Costing millions

The SA Chamber of Businesses (Sacob) said that the power outages had cost firms in the Cape approximately R500m.

On Tuesday at the Table View branch of KFC, staff were trying to sell off the last chicken. The manager of the branch, Maurice Smith, said that business had dropped by some 2%.

"Normally, we get about 700 customers a day, now (with the power outages) we get about 400."

The electricity cuts are also affecting businesses in other ways.

Staff at the Mitchell's Plain branch of Pick 'n Pay usually use the public address system to call fellow staff members from one sid of the shop to the other. However, when Bhuti Igwele, the manager of the branch had to be called, the staff member had to walk all the way to the other end of the shop to get him.

    No more candles

Igwele saids that while there had been a lot more buying of gas lamps, there were "no more candles left".

Makro in Ottery said that after re-stocking on gas lamps just last week, they had completely sold out.

Some have had to come up with some innovative ways to serve their customers. "We're serving customer with torches," says the manager of Campwell's hardware store in Bergvliet, Oscar Naylor. "It's very romantic," he quipped. :D :(

Evan Torrins, marketing manager for Cape Union Mart in Cape Town said that they had been very busy and that they had also sold out of items such as gas lamps in some stores but that they had "ordered a significant amount of stock".

Meanwhile, Wallace Mgoqi, city manager of Cape Town said people in the province should brace themselves for more power cuts on Wednesday.

After that, Capetonians will just have to wait and watch. :D :(

    Rubber bullets fly in Khutsong

    2006-03-01

Carletonville - Police used rubber bullets to disperse youths in Khutsong on Wednesday and extinguished burning tyres with a water cannon.
The youths had been throwing stones at a polling station and shouting threats at Independent Electoral Commission officials.

An unconfirmed number of people were arrested.

The incident took place outside a polling station in the grounds of a partly charred ruin of a building called Gugulethu Centre.

It was set alight last year in protests against the incorporation of Merafong Municipality into North West from Gauteng.

On Wednesday, residents of Khutsong boycotted the polls in protest against the government's ignoring of their calls to remain in Gauteng.

    Hallo Gogh

Wirres Zeug ????

    Kebble flogged R2.3bn shares

    2006-03-01

Brett Kebble began the unauthorised sale of Randgold Resources shares in New York, late in 2003, continuing until all R2.3bn worth had been sold.

He began the unauthorised sale of vast numbers of shares in the mining group Randgold Resources in New York, late in 2003.
He continued selling until he had sold all 21.5 million shares in the mother company, Randgold & Exploration.

It is difficult to determine the proceeds of these sales, but the shares would have fetched R2.3bn today.

The shares could not be traced at all after Kebble's murder in September last year.

Since then, a team of forensic auditors has been working flat out to try to determine what happened to the shares, and the proceeds of the sales.

The transactions at that time made the share price of Randgold Resources so volatile that chief executive Dr Mark Bristow tried to trace the origin of the shares.

He traced a stockbroker in New York who had done the transactions and, in this way, established that Kebble was selling the shares.

    No shareholders' permission

The shares in Randgold Resources, now an independent London company but formerly a subsidiary of Randgold & Exploration, were the main asset of Randgold & Exploration, which Kebble controlled and which was listed in Johannesburg.

At today's prices, the shares would be worth about R2.3bn, but the shareholders' permission to dispose of the assets was never obtained.

A graph of the volume of share transactions in Randgold Resources in New York clearly shows that the shares were sold there. The share price was highly volatile for a long time.

The Randgold shares were listed on the Nasdaq using the system of American deposit certificates.

Most of Kebble's transactions took place in March, April and May 2004.

Randgold Resouces has a normal trading volume on the Nasdaq of about 250 000 to 500 000 shares a day, but in those three months there were weekly volumes of more than a million shares and at times even up to 2.5 million shares a day.

All the transactions were sales offered by a well-known stockbroking firm in New York. Sake was asked not to publish the name of the firm.

A source close to the forensic audit said: "The money was used for obscure purposes, for example to finance transactions for black empowerment. :D

"Some of the blocks of shares were probably used as paper security for loans that Kebble couldn't repay later.

    Two recipients liquidated

"Then the banks would have instructed that the shares be sold to redeem the debt."

Two companies, Tuscan Mood 1224 and Paradigm Shift, into which about R34m of the money was channelled, were liquidated last week in the Rand High Court.

Other similar companies probably will be found in the coming weeks in the attempt to trace the enormous sums of money poured into them.

The source said: "It doesn't look good, but at least it doesn't look as though none of it will be regained."

    Hallo

CNQ.TO TLM WTO.TO COS-UN.TO ECA UPL NBL NXY PBG.TO PCZ IMO PPP SU.TO UTS.TO CHK ENB.TO EON EN TREN.OB CHAR.OB NOV RIG STO VLO SHC.TO GPE.V LNG TMY RUN.V WEL

    Silver Stock Report

    by Jason Hommel

    February 25th, 2006

To know where the price of gold is going, in terms of dollars, we need to know the fundamentals. The fundamentals of what? Dollars or gold?

Some people focus primarily on what the fundamentals of gold are, thinking it is all about the supply and demand of gold. Annual gold demand is estimated at 5000 tonnes and increasing, whereas mine supply is estimated at 2400 tonnes and declining. But above ground existing stocks of gold are as high as 150,000 tonnes! No other commodity has such a large stock of supply.

But gold is not a commodity. The fundamental nature of gold is that Gold is money. So, to know gold or silver, we need to know about the fundamentals of money. What is money, what should be money, and why is it money?

    Desirable Features of Money

To best function as money, a monetary item should possess a number of features:

To be a medium of exchange:
    * It must be liquid, easily tradable, and with a low spread between the prices to buy and sell. A low spread typically occurs when an item is fungible.
    * It must be easily transportable; precious metals have a high value to weight ratio. This is why oil, steel, copper, water, or bricks are not suitable as money.

To be a unit of account:
    * It must be divisible into small units without destroying its value; precious metals can be coined from bars, or melted down into bars again. This is why leather or animals are not most suitable as money.
    * It must be fungible: that is, one unit or piece must be equivalent to another, which is why diamonds or real estate are not suitable as money.
    * It must be a certain weight, or measure, to be verifiably countable. This is why paper is not most suitable as money.

To be a store of value:
    * It must be long lasting and durable; it must not be subject to decay. This is why food items, expensive spices, or even fine silks, are not most suitable as money.
    * It must have a stable value and an intrinsic value, as with a luxury item; a scarce or rare commodity.
    * It must be difficult to counterfeit, and the genuineness must be easily recognizable. These reasons are why paper, or electronic credits, often fail as money.

For these reasons, gold and silver have been chosen repeatedly throughout history as the choice for currency for more societies and cultures and over longer time periods than any other items. Those societies embracing gold and silver invariably have prospered under what is often called a golden age.

One key benefit of money is that it facilitates and encourages trade, savings, and wealth creation.

Perhaps the most desirable feature of money is that you have a lot of it as compared to other people, and that others want what you have. Money would be rather useless if everyone had a million dollars. Keep this in mind when considering the silver shortage.

Therefore, we need to know, and study about the potential supply and demand of money. But money can be measured in many different ways. There's total wealth, total bonds, total stocks, total money, the U.S. budget, the budget deficit, money in the banks, cash printed up, etc, and there is a different number of dollars of each.

These numbers below are the real fundamentals of the silver and gold markets. Silver and gold are money.

In physics, there is kinetic energy, and there is potential energy. Kinetic energy is movement. Potential energy is not moving, but is potential movement. Likewise, the annual supply and demand of the gold market is like the kinetic energy--measuring the current movement of gold. But it is probably more important to focus on the potential energy of the gold market, which is the measure of all the paper money and wealth that will one day be sold to buy gold and silver.

The potential demand for real money, is the total of paper money, or other wealth, that exists that could, one day, show up as demand for real money: gold and silver.

With that introduction, I present to you some ongoing research I do that I call, "The Money Chart". Study it well. The sources for most of the figures are linked, so you can validate this research. When I first published a few of these figures in December 2003, they were quoted by Richard Russell, one of the most well respected financial advisors in the world.

Therefore, when you hear that billions and billions of dollars are going to be invested in gold and silver stocks, just know that's an understatement.

I believe in 1980, the total market cap of all gold stocks was $1 trillion, and the total market cap of all NYSE stocks was $1 trillion.
Today, the figures are about $110 billion for gold stocks, and $21 trillion for NYSE stocks.

It's going to be a great decade for gold, and especially silver investors. :)

    I like this one:

So how did Kismet Oberon's :rolleyes:founder and senior adviser, former Malaysian businessman Stephen Chew , build up a literal gold mine during the past decade while so many other foreign firms failed?

Mr Chew said the company has been independently valued at $495 million.

"Generally, the valuation reflects about a tenth of the assets of the company," he said. "I was told we would be the largest company to ever go on the AIM board with that sort of value."

Right now, Mr Chew is on standby :P to London for the final listing details to be resolved.

"We're weeks away from listing," he said. "Our contracts are enforceable, our licences are properly issued.

We are the largest holder of Chinese gold outside the country." ;(

The answer, according to Mr Chew, lies in guanxi, Chinese for "personal relationships". :D $$$$$$$$

    GUANXI ?$
