In dem Jahr haben viele mich ausgelacht, heute lache ich.

The gold price gained another $8 an ounce to $535 this morning, setting it up for an eighth successive winning session. That’s a good omen. As any Chinese punter will tell you, eight is a powerfully lucky number.

Then again, luck probably doesn’t have much to do with what’s happening for the yellow metal right now. More fashionable than Versace, in a few short weeks gold has morphed from “barbarous relic” to the mass media’s investment darling.

Even the traditionally sceptical CNBC business television channel, which earlier this month explained in detail why the gold price was sure to drop, this morning quoted a forecast of $553 by mid-January.

Media headlines can be a double-edged sword. On the sharp end, as a relatively small market, gold’s new found popularity could become self-fulfilling. Fresh money chasing an already undersupplied area always exaggerates price movements.

Although such parties are great fun while they last, the crowds tend to depart just as quickly as they arrived, leaving latecomers with hangovers that can last for years.

It happened in 1980. Many bought in too late and were hammered by the predictable fall that eventually came. Losses led to resentment among an entire generation of potential investors, sparking a 20-year slump in the gold price.

But that’s like frat boys worrying before a party whether they’ve put too much vodka in the punch. Life doesn’t work that way. Nobody likes a wet blanket when everyone is only starting to get into the mood.

Although it is now higher than at any point in a quarter century, after adjusting for inflation, the gold price is still a long way from the heady days of January 1980 when it peaked at $850. In today’s money the price must top $2 000 to match those levels.

Will it keep running?

Just about everything points that way. Apart from the investment demand generated from fresh sources by gold’s newfound popularity, the fundamentals provide a solid underpin.

It no longer seems to matter what you believe the underlying reasons for the price movement might be.

Perhaps the price is being driven by gold-obsessed Indian and Chinese citizens pouring newfound wealth into the one store of value they trust.

Maybe the truth lies in reports that buying by Japanese bankers; oil sheiks; inflation-fearing Americans; perhaps even Central Banks is giving gold its buoyancy.

Or perhaps, in reality, it’s due to more controversial contentions like the bullion banks conspiracy theory articulated by the Gold Anti-Trust Action committee (GATA).

Whatever the reasons, all known facts seem to be pointing in the same direction – gold will go higher before this run ends.

The only area of disagreement seems to be how much further the price can go. Johannesburg-based technical cyclist Issy Bacher expects bullion to reach $700. Paul Walker, chief executive of gold research house GFMS, reckons a spike of $850 is possible.

GATA’s founder Bill Murphy believes that with the gold cartel having been busted, the gold price will go past $3 000. That might sound like a chirp from left field. But so would a forecast of $500 have been just a couple of years ago.

And Murphy is by no means alone. At a gold conference earlier this year, scion of the famous Fleming clan and former Harmony Gold chairman Adam Fleming suggested a price of $3 000 to $5 000 was in prospect.

The mood gold is in, no forecast, no matter how outrageous, can be ignored. Fear and greed make markets. And right now, greed for gold dominates.

Vor lauter Freude habe ich das 35 mal editiert, fast der POG von 535 USD.

Es gibt dumme und schlaue Kunden, und zu viele die nur auf eine Karte setzen und dabei verlieren koennen..
