Wild shoot-out terrifies PE
2008-2-21 09:30
Port Elizabeth - About 13 armed robbers who shot a volley of bullets at a filling station in the city on Wednesday afternoon, are still at large.
The wild shoot-out started when robbers opened fire on a cash van at 12:15 at the Total filling station in Paterson Road, leaving bystanders terrified.
Flying squad commander Captain Rassie Erasmus said the 13 robbers fled with three money boxes. He could not confirm how much money was stolen.
Trevor Rautenbach, who works at Builders Trade Depot across the street, said he was standing at the entrance to the shop when he heard the shots. "I saw four men. One was armed with a 9mm pistol. The others had AK-47 rifles," he said.
Eyewitnesses said the robbers tried to stop the armoured vehicle before the driver could race away.
One of the robbers hijacked Mike Burger's Nissan bakkie and drove in front of the cash van.
'It was terrifying'
"I was driving when they started shooting. One of the robbers pointed his gun at me and told me to get out," said a shocked Burger.
"It seemed as if they were all wearing blue uniforms. I went to hide at Builders. It was terrifying."
Sipho Williams wanted to put petrol in his car when the shooting started. "I heard shots. I put my car in reverse and left in a hurry. White smoke hung in the air after the shooting," he said.
A person who wanted to remain anonymous also stopped at the filling station moments before the shooting started.
"I lay down flat. They shot out the back window of my car. When I looked up, one of the robbers told me to look away.
"They shouted 'get the money, get the money!'. I kept lying flat. I was fortunate not to be hit by the bullets," he said.
Nico Schultz from Gardmed, who was first to arrive at the scene, confirmed that nobody was hurt during the shooting. "Many people were in severe shock."
Monty Montgomery, operational manager of Atlas, said the robbers fled in a blue double-cab Colt.
"They raced away on the Uitenhage road and turned around at Sydenham Primary School. The police pursued them," said Montgomery.
By late on Wednesday nobody had been arrested.:D

Frightened foreigners take refuge
2008-2-21 11:12
Pretoria
About 200 frightened foreign nationals slept at a community centre following ongoing conflict between foreigners and residents of the Itireleng informal settlement, outside Laudium, Pretoria police said on Thursday.
"They were taken to the community centre in Laudium on Wednesday where they spent the night. There were about 200 people last night; around 170 people are still at the centre," said Captain Thomas Mufamadi.
He said that the foreigners had been fearing for their lives and didn?t want to return to the settlement.
On Wednesday, residents assaulted three foreign nationals whom they accused of committing crimes in the area.
Wednesday's incident followed Monday's in which police vehicles were damaged when police intervened in the matter.
The residents were accusing all foreign nationals living in the area of committing crimes.

Jo'burg Uzi attack a 'hit'
2008-2-21 18:01
Johannesburg
- Police are convinced that an attack on two security guards in Hillbrow on Thursday morning was a targeted attack carried out by hit men.
Two men entered Firebrand Supermarket in Hillbrow at about 10:30 and fired four shots, hitting two 30-year-old female security guards, Sapa reported. One died at the scene and the other was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
While the two men were apprehended, police are searching for at least two more suspects who they are believed were behind the murders.
"We know the suspects we are looking for," Captain Bhekizizwe Mavundla told News24, but declined giving any details.
The men took nothing at the supermarket.
"It is clear that it had nothing to do with a robbery but the targeting of specific individuals," said Mavundla
The two gunmen, aged 19 and 20, were chased down by members of the community and held until police arrived.
"The community has been well groomed to help the police in fighting crime," said Mavundla.
One was armed with an Uzi submachine gun. It was confiscated by police along with six rounds of live ammunition.
The two gunmen were behind bars and were expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Police were investigating cases of murder, attempted murder and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
The names of the victims were not yet available as the police were yet to inform the next of kin of their deaths.

Johannesburg
- Two ATMs in Mondeor, south of Johannesburg, were bombed within 45 minutes in the early hours of Friday morning.
The first incident took place at the Panorama Shopping Centre in Mulbarton, where security personnel were held up by eight armed suspects, Captain Johan du Toit said.
"The security guards were locked in a room, the men blew up an ABSA ATM, and fled with an undisclosed amount of money," he said.
In the second incident, at 02:30, a Nedbank ATM was blown up at the Caltex service station in Kibler Park.
"Twenty suspects in four vehicles held up petrol attendants and locked them in a store room.
"The attendants then heard an explosion. The men fled with an undisclosed amount of money," Du Toit said.
No suspects had been arrested and investigations were continuing.:D

'I've had enough'
2008-2-22 21:07
Cape Town
A fed-up crime victim plans to sue Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula for a "significant amount" in the Pretoria High Court in March.
"I've had enough. I'm a little bull terrier. I'm there to say that the government must do something," Byron Gerber said on Friday.
Gerber said he spent three months in intensive care in Wilgeheuwel Hospital after being shot twice in the arm, right lung, kidney and liver by robbers in a Johannesburg security complex in 2005.
His hospital bills amounted to R1.6m.
Gerber said the police were denying South Africans their constitutional right to safety and security and freedom from "all forms of violence".
"Many citizens including myself are being denied this right by being imprisoned in our own homes or on the streets due to criminal elements targeting innocent people in the most violent crime waves," he said.
A lot of people wrote petitions, "jump up and down", but do nothing about it, he said.
Gerber was critical of the police bungling in his case. Although the police took pictures of the crime scene at his home, his friends eventually found the bullet with which he was shot and took it to the Muldersdrift police. They lost it.
The inspector tasked with handling his case was sick and died during the investigation. It was never continued.
He said "nothing was done" after several calls were made on his cellphone which the robbers stole from him, using another sim card.
A court date would be set down early in March.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Safety and Security Trevor Bloem said he was not aware of the case.
"You do have these cases from time to time," he said.
SAPA
Zimbabwe is reeling under an economic crisis with annual inflation officially at 100 580% - the highest in the world - and chronic shortages of basic commodities like fuel, cooking oil and sugar.
At least three million of its citizens, among them highly skilled professionals, have migrated to neighbouring South Africa, the United Kingdom and Australia.
"We are not going to patch up the tattered economy," Tsvangirai said. "The economy has been destroyed to such an extent that we need to start afresh."
"Zimbabwe is one of the world's great humanitarian crises. We need food, drugs and medical care. The nations of the world are helping but we need more.
"Beyond the humanitarian aid, we need the help of the world to rebuild our economy, but more than anything, we must look after our own."
He said $10bn would be required to revive the economy, including resuscitating companies that have folded and establishing a trust fund to woo back professionals who have left the country.
