nulcear energy for net zero - a strategy for action
empfehlungen
Recommendation 1: The state of development of UK and world advanced modular reactor (AMR) technology affirms that the demonstration reactor mentioned in the government's Energy White Paper should feature high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) technology, with major consideration also paid to demonstrating hydrogen generation using nuclear heat.
Recommendation 2: The task of specifying, developing and pursuing the path to a UK-based HTGR demonstrator should be given to a suitable body that is equipped and empowered to deliver the HTGR project. This would include directing all R&D necessary to define an optimum route, monitoring whether and how these optima change as studies progress, and re-optimising programmes accordingly.
Recommendation 3: R&D into closed fuel cycles should be continued to allow the UK to track developments in these systems and to gauge whether, or when, such systems will find a place in the UK energy market.
Recommendation 4: An ongoing UK view of the developments in AMR systems should be maintained and led by a body that is not conflicted by claims and lobbying by any particular system proposer. The Generic Feasibility Assessment has provided an example of a platform that could host this task, but a suitably 'interest-free' organisation would need to be set up with exemplary peer review.
Recommendation 5: A suitable broadly-based advisory body should be engaged to offer advice to government on the forward nuclear programme. This could be the Nuclear Innovation Research and Advisory Board (Nirab), or a successor, but Nirab would appear to have established the possible extent and value of such advice.
Recommendation 6: The Climate Change Committee should explore, with suitable assistance, the possibilities of a wider role for nuclear in the net-zero path.
Recommendation 7: The Energy Systems Catapult (an independent, not-for-profit organisation for industry, government, academia and research) should, with assistance from other modelling expertise, set up and run transparent level playing field models to monitor economic developments. This will motivate improvements and detect unrealistic optimism.
Recommendation 8: A platform such as that recommended for nuclear energy in recommendation four should be established for all energy sources present in the net-zero path, to give a clear and unbiased view of the current status of net zero.

Barclays report says nuclear is essential for decarbonisation
Nuclear energy's high load factors and reliability could make achieving net-zero affordable, according to a special report, “Nuclear for a decarbonised future”, published on 2 June by Barclays. The 34-page report says, “Nuclear is safer than commonly assumed, and new technology and further research could make it even cleaner, safer and cheaper. This could pave the way for a greater contribution to the global energy transition.”
Barclays notes that the report was prepared in whole or in part by equity research analysts based outside the US who are not registered/qualified as research analysts with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. The report makes five key points:- Nuclear is net zero: Nuclear energy, such as solar, wind, geothermal and hydroelectric, generates no direct carbon or GHG emissions, and has one of the lowest life-cycle carbon emission rates of all generation technologies, when accounting for indirect emissions associated with the mining of fuel and plant construction. We believe nuclear could form the base load generation necessary to enable the safe, reliable, affordable decarbonised grid investors are seeking.
- Nuclear can be affordable: Nuclear has a reliability factor of 80-90% compared with wind at 30-40% and solar at 10-25%. Along with its long plant life, nuclear works out comparatively affordable, especially when factoring in storage costs required for renewables. Nuclear’s high capital costs could come down if its life were extended or more plants were built, allowing for construction experience to shorten construction time and costs.
- Nuclear is becoming safer with new technology: While the disasters at Chernobyl and Fukushima caused numerous deaths through sickness and displacement, both prompted wholesale upgrades to fleets and structural reforms to safety systems. Data from Energy Central show that nuclear has the lowest mortality rate of all types of power generation, in terms of deaths per terawatt-hour. New technology aimed at protecting reactor cores using the laws of physics (as opposed to power) should create even safer solutions.
- Nuclear waste is small on a comparative basis: Annual nuclear waste generation is significantly less than the expected volumetric annual waste from retired solar panels, wind turbine blades and lithium ion batteries (including in electric vehicles). Recycling or reprocessing fuel in the case of nuclear could reduce waste by up to 97%, which is more efficient than solar panels, wind turbine blades or lithium ion batteries.
- Nuclear power still divides investor opinion: Significant regional differences are evident regarding how nuclear power is viewed. The EU has not yet formed its official view, but when this comes it may provide additional clarity on the role of nuclear in the green transition.
..
On nuclear generation there are three paths to maintaining or increasing generation market share: plant life extension to 80 years or more; new build similar to current projects in the US and China; of small modular reactors (SMRs). As to offshore wind, it has the benefit of higher and more consistent capacity factors than onshore wind, but faces higher costs and longer construction periods. Lease availability, transmission connectivity, and maritime concerns are major barriers. For onshore wind optimal sites are a limited commodity and onshore wind is an intermittent resource.
..
Looking at the attributes of nuclear, the report says: “The crux of
global debate on nuclear power is finding a balance between largely
divided advantages and disadvantages.” A nuclear plant, over its
lifetime is 10 times cleaner than gas and 20 times cleaner then coal.
“While this is similar to renewables, the real ‘nucleus’ of nuclear
power in the transition to net zero emission lies in its powerful
reliability, with healthy plants exhibiting capacity factors in excess
of 90% and able to generate power for up to 80 years.” This makes
nuclear power “an optimal ‘plug-in’ base-load power to complement
developing storage facilities as intermittent renewables energy
increasingly penetrate the grid”.bg bh

Unit 1 of the Taishan nuclear power plant is operating at full power and there has been no release of radiation at the plant or in the surrounding area, China General Nuclear (CGN) announced yesterday following media reports of a leak at the plant in China's Guangdong province. France's EDF, which holds a 30% stake in the two-unit plant, said it had been informed of an increase in the concentration of certain noble gases in the EPR reactor's primary circuit.
Taishan 1 and 2 are the first two reactors based on the EPR design to begin operating anywhere in the world so far. They form part of an EUR8.0 billion (USD9.7 billion) contract signed by Areva and CGN in November 2007. The Taishan project - 140 kilometres west of Hong Kong - is owned by TNPJVC, a joint venture between CGN (51%), French utility EDF (30%) and the Chinese utility Guangdong Energy Group (19%). Unit 1 of the power plant started construction in 2009, followed by unit 2 in 2010. The 1750-megawatt EPRs entered commercial operation in December 2018 and September 2019, respectively. The EPR design adopted in Taishan was developed by Framatome.
Taishan 1 has entered the second fuel cycle and is currently operating at full power, CGN noted. Taishan 2 has completed its first overhaul and was successfully reconnected to the grid on 10 June. "The safety, quality, and construction period of the overhaul have all completed the set goals," the company added.
"Since it was put into commercial operation, the Taishan nuclear power plant has strictly controlled the operation of the units in accordance with the operating licence documents and technical procedures," CGN said. "All operating indicators of the two units have met the requirements of nuclear safety regulations and power plant technical specifications.
"At present, continuous monitoring of environmental data shows that the environmental indicators of the Taishan nuclear power plant and its surroundings are normal."
EDF said today it has been informed of the increase in the concentration of certain noble gases in the primary circuit of Taishan 1. However, it noted this is "a known phenomenon, studied and provided for in the reactor operating procedures".
The French company said that, as a shareholder of TNPJVC, it has requested the holding of an extraordinary meeting of the TNPJVC board of directors in order for management to "present all the data and the necessary decisions".
Framatome said it is "supporting resolution of a performance issue" with the Taishan plant. "According to the data available, the plant is operating within the safety parameters," it said. "Our team is working with relevant experts to assess the situation and propose solutions to address any potential issue."
There are three further EPR reactors under construction worldwide, including Flamanville 3 in France, Olkiluoto 3 in Finland and Hinkley Point C in the UK. -

This NII Report is the first of many that will ex-amine the opportunities for opening a hydrogen economy, from the need to grow our pool of specialized talent and expertise, to setting the policy conditions that get produc-tion and regulations right. But it starts from solid ground. Hydrogen is an opportunity for Canadians to develop harmonized energy policies that allow regions to exploit their different strengths in develop-ing paths to net-zero, such as Ontario’s nuclear advantage. And it provides a hopeful alternative to the frustrations and impediments that have stymied our decarbonization efforts so far.
And Ontario’s world-leading clean grid, founded upon its strength in homegrown nuclear power, is a ready source of emis-sions-free energy for producing green hydrogen. That’s because hydrogen can be produced through electrol-ysis, a process of making it from nothing more than elec-tricity and water. Electrolysis uses electricity to split water’s two hydrogen atoms from the oxygen, leaving pure oxygen as the only byproduct. If the electricity used in the process is clean — as it is when it originates from Ontario’s vastnuclear, solar, wind or hydroelectric assets — the result is green hydrogen that emits no GHG emissions at all. In this model, electricity from a nuclear generation plant can be transmitted by the existing grid infrastructure to electro-lyzers located on the sites where the hydrogen is needed.

Canada's largest oil sands producers have formed an alliance that aims to work with federal and provincial government to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from their operations by 2050. The Oil Sands Pathways to Net Zero initiative will, amongst other things, evaluate and accelerate the application of emerging emissions-reducing technologies including small modular nuclear reactors.

selbst indonesion will nun bis 2060 co2 neutral werden, indem sie ihre baseload an kohlekraft abschalten...PLN's plan envisions nuclear power being a substantial part of the energy mix. According to the materials presented to parliament, nuclear energy will become a factor in 2040 "to maintain system reliability as the development of nuclear technology becomes more secure."
Indonesia's aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 is "clearly possible" and could "even be accelerated to around 2050," said Fabby Tumiwa, executive director of the Institute of Essential Services Reform, an Indonesian think tank focused on energy and the environment.

ebenfalls alles hier bereits diskutiert.
