Golden Star Starts Mining the Higher Grade SAK Pits at Its Wassa Gold Mine
...
Peter Bradford, President and CEO, stated that, "Wassa has been negatively impacted by lower than expected grades since commencing commercial production in April 2005. While we continue to improve our understanding of the reasons for the underperformance, we do expect grades to trend higher as we access deeper portions of the pit. SAK is expected to provide a further boost to the average grade. Based on current knowledge, the SAK deposit is not large and therefore its positive impact on grade is expected to be limited to the next 12-18 months. However, in the longer term we expect that the Hwini-Butre and Benso deposits acquired through our acquisition of St Jude Resources Ltd in late 2005 to provide a source of higher grade material.
"As at December 31, 2005," continued Mr. Bradford, "we estimated the combined undiluted measured and indicated mineral resource at Hwini Butre and Benso to be 5.3 million tonnes at an average grade of 4.53 grams per tonne. In addition, we reported a combined 1.1 million tonnes of inferred mineral resource at an average grade of 3.50 grams per tonne for Hwini-Butre and Benso. In 2006 we are investing $4.3 million on the exploration, drilling and technical studies on these deposits. We expect to complete a feasibility study for their development by December 2006."...

Bylined to: Abbas BakhtiarFormer Nordland University (Norway) associate professor, Dr. Abbas Bakhtiar writes: On Wednesday, May 17, the Dow Jones plunged 214 points to 11,206 -- its worst point drop since March 2003. The downward trend started a week ago and is a warning sign of troubles ahead. This sudden drop has come as a complete surprise to the unfortunate small investors and speculators. The so called “experts” point at the sudden threat of inflation as the main cause of the recent reversals in the markets.

May 22, 2006Another threat against the dollar comes from countries such as Iran and Venezuela. Iran recently registered an Oil Bourse to compete with Bourses in New York and London. The threat comes from the currency in which the oil is to be sold: the Euro. Iranians are going to make the Euro the standard currency for oil transactions. Some sympathetic countries such as Venezuela and others may join in. If the Iranians succeed in this, the pressure on the dollar will be catastrophic. Nearly every country has to hold a certain amount of dollars in reserve for oil purchases. If the dollar continues to weaken in value, and there is the possibility of purchasing oil in Euro, then these countries might unload their dollars for safer currencies such as Euro. What will then happen to the value of dollar?

Beaufor Mine
For 2006, Richmont Mines expects to extract 192,000 tonnes of ore at an average recovered grade of 6.65 g/t Au for a production of 40,000 ounces at the Beaufor Mine. Investments of approximately $557,000 have been allocated for the completion of the ramp to a planned vertical depth of 30 metres, which the Company is currently driving, below the lowest level accessible from the shaft, located 610 metres below the surface. This work will allow for the extension of Zone C, where reserves of 50,000 tonnes at an average grade of 9.4 g/t have already been identified. Richmont Mines plans to begin extraction of this ore starting in the middle of 2006. The potential of Zone B, located farther to the south, will also be confirmed by drilling, as will that of Zone C, which is open at depth.
East Amphi
Richmont Mines has set the objective of advancing this deposit in production during the fourth quarter of 2005.
Island Gold
The Company plans to prepare a reserve calculation, using the data from drilling that will be available in September 2006. In the third quarter of 2006, Richmont Mines plans to restart the mill located on site, which has a capacity of 650 tonnes per day, and to begin processing ore from development. Subsequently, the Company plans for the milling work to continue with the processing of ore from the Island Gold property so as to achieve production during the second half of the year.
Valentine Lake
In 2005, an investment of $393,200 was made to complete 1,745 metres of drilling at the Valentine Lake property, located in Newfoundland. In 2004, Richmont Mines had allocated $1,056,283 to this property and identified inferred resources of approximately 920,000 tonnes of ore at an average grade of 8.51 g/t, or 251,600 ounces of gold, which corresponds to the 70% interest that Richmont Mines could eventually obtain. In 2003, Richmont Mines had invested $33,649.

Catherine Gignac, an analyst with Wellington West, said it doesn't look like the law is aimed at companies like Gold Reserve and Crystallex International Corp. (KRY), another mining company with a property near Las Brisas. "They've been developing their projects so they wouldn't be considered 'idle' properties," she said.
-
...Venezuela will consider subscribing operating contracts with private companies to help develop projects that are 100% owned by Venezuela as it revamps its mining laws. Crystallex has an operating contract to develop and exploit Las Cristinas gold project, which is 100% owned by Venezuela. This relationship was mentioned in Mr. Gamargo's statement as one which will be honoured as new mining laws are passed.

J Gold Reserve Says Not Target of Venezuelan Mining Law
.
By Kamakshi Tandon
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRESTORONTO (Dow Jones)--The draft of a new Venezuelan mining law gives no indication that Gold Reserve Inc.(GRZ) will be affected, according to the company's president.
Venezuelan Mining Minister Victor Alvarez told reporters Friday that the law, which will see the government take a controlling stake in non-producing mines, will apply to mines awaiting production permits.
But Gold Reserve president Douglas Belanger said the text of the legislation contained no mention of properties that were waiting for permits. He said the minister's comments were the first time he had seen such a reference.
Gold Reserve owns the Las Brisas gold project in Venezuela and is waiting for permits to be granted.
"Up until this morning, all our contact with the ministry of mines and the ministry of the environment is that the project is moving forward, no change to the existing concession," Belanger said.
He doesn't feel the minister's comments will apply to Gold Reserve. "A lot of the time, these things are taken out of context," he said. "Alvarez has said numerous times, if you're spending money and you're in compliance, you don't have to worry."
The Venezuelan government's move is directed at companies who brought concessions in the country during the rush of the 1990s and have not developed the land, Belanger said. "Literally 700 or more of those properties have been sitting without a nickel being spent on them."
He said Gold Reserve has spent $100 million on the project to date and plans to spend a total of $700 million.
Two of the company's top executives met with Venezuelan officials Thursday and were told their application is being processed, he added. He expects the permits to be granted in "weeks or a few months."
Wellington doesn't have an investment-banking relationship with either company and Gignac doesn't own their stocks.
On the American stock exchange, Gold Reserve was down 23 cents to $5.05 on about 137,000 shares.

"Bruce said that indicates Venezuela is "not targeting the companies that are in compliance, they're targeting the companies that are not playing the game. The problem is that people were taking a contract or concession from the government and doing nothing with them."
