NEW YORK CITY--(Mineweb.com) Bob Bishop, editor and publisher of the Gold Stock Report, Monday predicted that the "lousy earnings" for most mining companies during the first quarter will continue into the second quarter of this year.
During a presentation to the New York Institutional Gold Conference, Bishop said he liked Canadian juniors Orezone of Ottawa, Viceroy of Vancouver and Virginia of Quebec City as sound potential investments with "growing deposits."
Nevertheless, he predicted the sell-off of gold stocks will continue as mining companies suffer from higher prices for consumable commodities.
Bishop said he has seen "a slow, steady erosion" of earnings in the mining industry, which demonstrate that "mining is not a great business to be in" at the present time. He predicted mining companies will continue to experience "further waves of selling," compounded by an absence of buyers for mining stocks. Nonetheless, Bishop said he also believes that "it's a good time to be buying stock."
"Gold mining is not a sustainable business at these prices," Bishop explained. As an example, he cited China and India "sucking up commodities," which in turn changed the cost structure for steel, diesel, and other consumables. Meanwhile, "South African production is starting to fall off a cliff" as gold production within the industry as a whole declines, he added.
NGOs, whose ranks include the "ecological left and the religious right" are becoming "very dogmatic in their tactics" against mining, according to Bishop. For instance, Bishop said he fears Newmont "isn't fairing too well" as the object of numerous attacks by NGOs.
Bishop also stated that he believes that there is "an awful lot of playing with the gold price" the gold price because there are "many more tools available and many more people" who are willing to use them.
Meanwhile, Bishop said he favored Orezone due to its potential to be bought by Goldfields for the junior companies deposits in Burkina Faso. Viceroy Exploration's advanced stage Gualcamayo Gold Project in the San Juan Province of Argentina offers "superior economics relative to what's out there," he added.
Virginia Gold Mines' Roberto System at its Eleonore gold project in James Bay has revealed a potential for 1.5 million ounces in the very early days of exploration, according to Bishop. "They are really, really going to grow a lot," he predicted, forecasting that "a major [mining company] will do a deal with Virginia.
Bishop also expressed his enthusiasm for Cardero Resources JV with Anglo American in Baja California Norte, Mexico, describing it as "Anglo's number one exploration project in the world. He also extolled the potential of Almaden Minerals' "Yanacocha look-alike" in Mexico.
