Gold Companies Have More Cash - Not From Mines

Caledonia Mining to list on London AIM market

    2005-06-22 10:30 ET - News Release

    Mr. Stefan Hayden reports

CALEDONIA MINING CORPORATION ANNOUNCES ADMISSION TO THE AIM MARKET OF THE LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE AND POUNDS STERLING 1.57 MILLION PLACING

Caledonia Mining Corp. expects to be admitted to the London Stock Exchange's AIM market on Monday, June 27, 2005, under the ticker symbol CMCL.L, and to successfully complete a placing of 34,888,888 shares, raising 1.57 million British pounds sterling (approximately $3,536,268) at 4.5 pence per share.

Caledonia is a diversified mining and exploration company focused in Southern Africa and Canada. The company's portfolio of assets include the operating Barbrook gold mine in South Africa and three advanced exploration projects -- the Rooipoort platinum project in South Africa, the Mulonga plain diamond joint venture and the Nama cobalt project in Zambia. Caledonia recently noted it had signed a letter of intent (LOI) with a cobalt refinery for the long-term supply of cobalt concentrate from Nama, on condition the testwork and commercial process is satisfactory.

This multicommodity and multigeographic approach reduces the overall risk exposure to commodity prices, socio-economic challenges, currencies and technical risks. Caledonia believes that this approach is preferable to that adopted by single-project, single-commodity resource companies.

Stefan Hayden, Caledonia's president and chief executive officer, said: "I am delighted with Caledonia's admission to London's AIM market, which successfully accomplishes yet another of our stated objectives for 2005. This listing will facilitate U.K. and European institutions and investors becoming shareholders in Caledonia, and will further broaden the shareholder base, ultimately benefiting all shareholders.

"I am also encouraged that Caledonia was able to raise pounds sterling 1.57 million, given the current difficult market conditions in London. These proceeds will be used to further advance our exploration projects, in particular the Nama cobalt and the Rooipoort platinum projects, as well as part fund some capital expenditure required at our operating gold mine, Barbrook."

Caledonia currently has 301,112,286 ordinary shares in issue, which will increase to 336,001,174 shares when the new London placing is completed. Caledonia has 27,232,909 share purchase warrants and 16,908,700 share purchase options outstanding. Seymour Pierce Ltd. is the nominated adviser and broker to Caledonia in the U.K.

    Harmony SA ops 'mostly profitable'
    ===========================

Outside the shafts that are currently being restructured, Harmony Gold's South African gold mines are profitable at R94 000 rand per kilogram, Harmony spokesperson Brenton Saunders said on Monday.

In late afternoon trade, the rand gold price was at R94 765 a kilogram, the highest level for gold since January 2004.

During Harmony's March quarter, the group's cash cost in South Africa was R87 233 per kilogram, from R79 284 per kilogram in the December 2004 quarter.

By the end of July or August, Harmony expects to complete its restructuring at its South African operations and is likely to get its cash operating cash down to R75 000 per kilogram and this would give Harmony a margin of over 20 percent, at the current rand gold price, Saunders said.

At the shafts, which are currently under a Section 189 restructuring notice, there are no longer any managers as they were retrenched in April, and production at these shafts now stands at a very low level or zero, he added.

On May 6, the South African Labour Court ruled that the process that Harmony had followed in moving to retrench 5000 mineworkers at its Free State mines was illegal.

Harmony restarted the restructuring process after the court ruling on May 19 and is now 30 days into the 60-day statutory process, Saunders said.

A Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) mediator is assisting in the restructuring process at Harmony, he added.

Harmony has notification that it could retrench up to 11 780 workers at its operations in South Africa, but retrenchments could be minimised, Saunders said.

At some of Harmony's operations in South Africa, it was no longer about the price of gold, but the fact that gold reserves had literally run out, he added.
