    Dark days ahead for SA

    2007-12-12 14:49

    Johannesburg

Constant power cuts are darkening the mood among South Africans, with President Thabo Mbeki admitting that government was at fault for ignoring growing energy needs.

Africa's largest economy is buckling under energy-pressures after failing to heed pleas by state power utility Eskom to invest more in electricity generation to keep up with the country's growth.

"We said not now, later. We were wrong. Eskom was right. We were wrong," Mbeki said in a rare public apology during a speech on Tuesday night.

To some the power cuts are a mere annoyance, small businesses lose money and some - like the owner of a popular South African ice cream brand - face financial disaster when energy giant Eskom tightens its straining energy belt.

A booming post-apartheid economy, and scant regard for energy efficiency as South Africans lavishly squander electricity at the cheapest rates in the world, are some of the reasons Huberto Stempowski now has to find another way to chill his ice-cream.

"It's a big worry. We are being forced to invest in a generator. That's a huge expense for the business," says the owner of popular Huberto's ice-cream.

    Embarked on media blitz

But the R160 000 needed to generate his own electricity is worth it considering the R300 000 worth of stock he stands to lose in an extended blackout.

This week, planned power rationing in suburbs across the country has resulted in outages of up to three hours each.

Eskom has embarked on a media blitz to educate South Africans on energy efficiency, with the prospect of shortages stretching into the next decade.

With radio adverts urging office workers to switch off the lights and billboards encouraging staff to switch off their coffee-maker, Eskom has even asked that South Africans use energy efficient Christmas lights.

Eskom enterprises chief executive Brian Dames told AFP that solutions to the crisis were being pinned on new coal-fired power plants in the medium term while investigating more nuclear technology in the longer run.

"It's quite a tough task to get behaviours to change, to get people to look at energy as a precious resource," he said at the company's Johannesburg headquarters.

Bill Lacey, an economist for the South African Chamber of Commerce, warned potential investors may be put off by unreliable energy output.

"Because of the cost implications of adequate backup measures, small businesses may be the hardest hit by such disruptions."

Electricity in SA cheapest in the world

Dames said investors would have to weigh up the risks themselves, as industrial electricity in South Africa was still the cheapest in the world.

Currently, South Africa's peak demand has reached 36 500 megawatts, while Eskom is able to supply 38 000MW, or 40 000MW with electricity imported from the Cahorra Bassa dam in neighbouring Mozambique.

South Africa aims to add another 40 000 megawatts to its power grid in the next 20 years, and at least half of that will come from nuclear technology with the rest coming from coal, and a small amount from renewables.

While South Africans may grimace at having to rein in their energy use, Richard Worthington of environmental group Earthlife Africa says it may be just what the energy inefficient country needs.

"Probably the best thing that could've happened to us is for people to experience early signs of what we will have to live with in future, an energy constrained future."

Rich in coal resources, South Africa's total electricity generating fleet is 88% coal-based, and is one of the worst carbon dioxide emitters worldwide.

However, much to the chagrin of environmentalists, South Africa sees a future in predominantly nuclear energy as the only sustainable option.

"We have no other big capacity options other than the coal and the nuclear and those take time," said Dames.

Alles Augenwischerei :D

The European Central Bank broke ranks this week, doing just what the OECD said and keeping Eurozone rates on hold. But the Fed and Bank of England?

Neither are charged with growing the economy. Both are supposed to avoid destroying their currencies and letting inflation run wild. But as Clive Briault, a managing director of the Financial Services Authority - the UK's investment watchdog - said this week, "there is a very real prospect that conditions will worsen further, raising some important risks for consumers.

"If their financial plans depend on cheap and abundant credit, the absence of those conditions is likely to cause significant consumer stress."

Stress meaning a slowdown, and slowdown might now mean recession. It cannot be allowed, whatever the costs.

What might that cost be to cash savers without gold?

    ..... Back to Cash $$$$ !!

    Auch lustig : :D

1 = stock is going no where, its pure junk let me look at something else.

2 = lucky break, it's going to definitely crash.

3 = what it's still going up earnings are not so good people are definitely getting carried away its going to pull back and crash.

4 = ahh see I knew it was going to crash, thank God I did not buy. (Mistake the mass mindset misses the main point here. Yes it pulled back, but look where the pull back ended miles away from its first break out. A losers mind can only see the picture for what it is not, by replacing it with a picture from his or her imagination. Since they live in a losing sphere they focus on the negative aspects but not on the positive aspects).

5 = what happened here this stock was supposed to crash how the hell did it get here. Perhaps I should have bought I could have made a lot of money; this looks like a sure thing. So only halfway through stage 5 will the mass mindset decide it’s safe to venture out. Now this person finally musters the courage to buy. Wow it actually went up, great I'm making money.

6 = this stock is going to go to the moon let me tell all my friends about it; it looks like a sure thing.

7 = what happened it pulled back ahh I am not going to fall for this like I fell for it last time (look at number 4). Time to buy more; buy on the dip that's it.

8 = I knew it, its going up and I made more money, wish I had bought more. Next time I will invest more on the pull back. (Notice the loser's mindset does not bother to take time to notice that the stock did not put in a new high. All that matters is that it went up).

9 = it's going down again, time to really load up I don't want to lose this opportunity. Earnings are great so it must be a good time to buy some more.

10 = first dose of bad news and the stock takes a big hit, okay this is just temporary it’s going to go back up. (Blind faith (a huge mistake), one of the main ingredients of a losing mindset). Let me buy more and average down.

11 = maybe I should sell now things don't look good, but you know what let me just hold for a bit longer maybe things will change. Yeah things have to change look how fast this stock went up and it has pulled back so much. The worst is over it has to go up.

12 = this stock is dead I have to get out; it’s not going anywhere (this is when the stocks start to bottom. The secret programmed desire to lose syndrome has completed its mission. Trader is in state of extreme distress and shell-shocked). I am never going to look at this stock again I knew it was garbage why did I ever buy it in the first place.

13 = Slow base formations and the possible start of new up trend and the worst part is that this trader is out :D

    -----

    Final note

In the short term it’s possible that the precious metal sector might take a small hit due to the dollar rallying. If this happens we would view it as a buying opportunity and not one to run from.

Long term we feel that the entire commodities sector will start to stand on its own feet and not on the so called dead feet of the dollar.

Its demand that’s going to drive these markets and not a weak dollar and demand is unlikely to fall anytime soon. ;)

It is defeat that turns bone to flint; it is defeat that turns gristle to muscle; it is defeat that makes men invincible.

Neue Kaufgelegenheit....bis 19. Dezember gibt es heftige Schwankungen sagt Merriman.

Also starting this week, heliocentric Mercury (not geocentric) will starts its ingress of Sagittarius, December 8-19.
Typically, at least the first 4-9 days of this ingress correspond with sharp moves in many markets, including precious metals.

My observation is that about 65% of the time metals will be higher, 20% of the time sharply lower, and 15% of the time, just back and forth.

It will be interesting to see what happens this time, for it is occurring during a Mars retrograde.. ..
