South Africa 1128 children murdered in 2005

    2006-12-14 18:36

    Cape Town

Boiling water, hammers and iron pipes were among the instruments used to kill some of the 1 128 children murdered in South Africa last year. :(

This is according to Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula, who, in a written reply to a parliamentary question posed by the Democratic Alliance, said almost a fifth of the child murders were committed by other children.

According to figures contained in his reply, a total of 324 (28.7%) children died as a result of being shot. A further 287 (25.4%) were killed by knives.

However, the third-largest category of causes of death - totalling 203 of the children - is headed "unknown".

In a statement on Thursday, DA spokesperson on child abuse, Mike Waters, questioned how seriously investigations into child murders were being carried out.

"According to [the] reply... in almost one fifth of child murders in 2004/05, no cause of death was identified, which means that it is almost certain that no autopsy was carried out.

"But an autopsy is the starting point of any investigation and an almost absolute requirement for a successful prosecution.

"The reply therefore raises questions about how seriously child murderers are being pursued, if even the basics of an investigation are not being carried out," he said.

    The horror of the violence

Waters said it was only when one saw the causes of death listed in the minister's reply that the horror of the violence was brought home.

"Of these murdered children, 26 were kicked to death, ten were burnt to death, and six were killed with a fist. Another six were killed with an axe. Boiling water, hammers and iron pipes were used to kill a further nine children."

He said in 18% of the cases, no weapon was identified.

"Given the broad categories of weapons used - such as 'sharp object' and 'blunt object' - even a very superficial investigation should have been able to determine the cause of death.

"This suggests that there has in fact been virtually no investigation and, furthermore, it means that there is no forensic evidence available to base a prosecution on.

"It is therefore hardly surprising that the reply indicates that in 31.2% of cases, nobody was charged with the murder," he said.

The young age of some offenders also raised alarm bells about the appalling levels of violent behaviour among young South Africans.

"Some 19% were under the age of 18, and a total of 34% of murders were carried out by people under the age of 21," Waters said.

    SA food prices soar

    2006-12-14 13:40

Johannesburg - South Africa' national food prices increased on average by 7.3% between October 2005 and October 2006, data released on Thursday by the National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC) showed.

The council, which monitors 75 key food products that include brown bread, super maize meal, special maize meal and boerewors, said the increase was considerably higher than the figure of 6.03% for the period July 2005 to July 2006.

"Increased inflationary pressure in September and October are a particular concern in light of the up coming festive season, which is usually associated with inflationary trends due to demand for food items," the council said.

Food items that increased by more than the inflationary target of the Reserve Bank of 6% included brown bread at 6.08%, beef at 24.06% and super maize meal shot up by 46.49%.

"Based on the product we monitor, the cost of the basket of food was R871.22 in October 2005 and increased by R63.39 to R934.61 in October 2006," the council said.

However, there were a few products that showed price decreases over the same period. Prices for carrots fell by 10.85%, potatoes by 20.99%, pork chops by 7.17% and skimmed milk powder by 19.37%.

NAMC said it expected the maize meal prices to decrease slightly in January, while seasonal increases in demand for red meat and chicken were expected to increase prices further in December and January.

New Forecast: Severe Space Storm Headed to Earth

    By Robert Roy Britt
    Senior Science Writer
    posted: 13 December 2006
    03:45 pm ET

Editor's Note: This forecast replaces the predictive aspects of this earlier story on the solar flare.

Space weather forecasters revised their predictions for storminess after a major flare erupted on the Sun overnight threatening damage to communication systems and power grids while offering up the wonder of Northern Lights.

"We're looking for very strong, severe geomagnetic storming" to begin probably around mid-day Thursday, Joe Kunches, Lead Forecaster at the NOAA Space Environment Center, told SPACE.com this afternoon.

The storm is expected to generate aurora or Northern Lights, as far south as the northern United States Thursday night. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station are not expected to be put at additional risk, Kunches said.

Radio communications, satellites and power grids could face potential interruptions or damage, however.

Solar flares send radiation to Earth within minutes. Some are also accompanied by coronal mass ejections (CME), clouds of charged particles that arrive in a day or two. This flare unleashed a strong CME that's aimed squarely at Earth.

"It's got all the right stuff," Kunches said.

However, one crucial component to the storm is unknown: its magnetic orientation. If it lines up a certain way with Earth's magnetic field, then the storm essentially pours into our upper atmosphere. If the alignment is otherwise, the storm can pass by the planet with fewer consequences.

Kunches and his team are advising satellite operators and power grid managers to keep an eye on their systems. In the past, CMEs have knocked out satellites and tripped terrestrial power grids. Engineers have learned to limit switching at electricity transfer stations, and satellite operators sometimes reduce operations or make back-up plans in case a craft is damaged.

Another aspect of a CME involves protons that get pushed along by the shock wave. Sometimes these protons break through Earth's protective magnetic field and flood the outer reaches of the atmosphere—where the space station orbits—with radiation. The science of it all is a gray area, Kunches said. But the best guess now is that there will only be a slight increase in proton activity. That's good news for the astronauts.

"When the shock goes by, we don't expect significant radiation issues," he said.

The astronauts were ordered to a protective area of the space station as a precaution last night.

Now that sunspot number 930 has flared so significantly—after several days of being quiet—the forecast calls for a "reasonble chance" of more major flares in coming days, Kunches said.

National Bank Raises Gold Price Forecasts as Dollar Declines

    2006-12-12 23:18 (New York)

    By Chia-Peck Wong

Dec. 13 (Bloomberg) -- National Bank Financial, a wholly-owned unit of National Bank of Canada, the country's sixth-biggest bank, increased its gold price estimates amid forecasts that the dollar may fall.

Gold may average $650 an ounce next year, 8 percent higher than the bank's earlier forecast. In 2008, the metal may average $625, 19 percent more than the previous estimate, National Bank analysts led by Tanya Jakusconek said in the report yesterday.

The dollar may decline 6 percent against the euro next year amid prospects for lower interest rates in the U.S., the ongoing war in Iraq and potential for a stronger yuan, the analysts said.
Gold usually moves counter to the U.S. currency as investors buy the bullion as an alternative investment and an inflation hedge.

``The dollar will continue to be under pressure next year from soft economic data, its continuing struggle with the twin deficits and expected European Central Bank rate hikes versus anticipated Fed easing next year,'' the analysts said.

Gold for immediate delivery traded at $629.35 an ounce at 12 p.m. Singapore time. The metal has advanced 22 percent this year while the dollar has fallen 11 percent against the euro.

Gold purchases by hedge funds and by the central banks of China and Japan would also support prices of the metal.

China, the largest holder of foreign currency reserves at $987.9 billion at the end of September, has 19.29 million ounces of gold reserves. Gold represents only 1.2 percent of its total reserve assets, compared with 1.7 percent in Japan and the world average of 11 percent, the analysts said.

National Bank also raised its silver price estimates. Next year, the metal may average $13 an ounce, 8 percent higher than the previous estimate. In 2008, it may average $12.50.

Silver for immediate delivery, which has soared 56 percent this year, was at $13.87 an ounce at 12 p.m. in Singapore.

    DOW THEORY ANALYSIS SAC
    SPECIAL REPORT

    US$: A Real Dilemma!

.....as you can see, there’s been a huge decline in the value of the dollar even with the help of our Asian friends. Just what do you think this chart would look like if they simply were to stop buying? Here’s a hint: it won’t be pretty!

Before I conclude this article, I would like to tell you what I think is in store for the dollar over the coming weeks and months, but first a little history. From early 2002 until late 2004, the dollar was the short sale of the century, bottoming at 80.50. Then we spent almost all of 2005 rallying back up to 92.00. Now it appears all but certain we are going to test the late 2004 lows. How do I know that? Look at the last rally and the decline that followed. The last rally took slightly more than four months to go from 83.50 to 87.50. The decline that followed took just six weeks to give all that back and more. That is a sign of real weakness and that tells me we are headed a lot lower. I believe we’ll do so in one of two ways:

We’ll have a counter trend reaction lasting nine to fourteen days and topping out at 84.34 (using the March 07 US Dollar futures contract as a guide) and then we’ll turn down hard, or we’ll simply head down from here.
Once we turn down, we’ll find significant resistance at 80.50 and then 78.20 but neither will stop the fall. The ultimate target for this leg down is a minimum of 72.80 and a maximum of 67.10. Furthermore, I would expect this leg down to exhaust itself by early summer.

In closing, it is an inescapable conclusion that the U.S. dollar is headed lower. The 72.80 low mentioned above is a best case scenario. It could get worse, a lot worse. How do you think our foreign bankers will feel about holding cash and bonds in a currency that devalues so rapidly? How will foreign holders of our stocks feel? After all, Dow stocks almost pay no dividends so there is no way to compensate. Can you see the potential here for a real crack? I can! All you need is some relatively minor player like Brazil to cash in their chips and the rush will start. It will be like trying to fit an elephant through the eye of a needle. Push all you want but it won’t happen.

Some time ago I also was stuck on the "Why didn't Newmont sue or even mind" question. It was explained to me (I think by Lestercare) that Newmont didn't find out about the Navidad claim and location until they had the deal with AQI done or almost done, depending on who you believe and what dates are used. So Newmont's attitude would have been to tell AQI, "it's yours to pursue (a lawsuit) if you want to." And AQI did. That's IF that is the true story of how this unfolded. Then that provides a possible reason for all of us who wondered why Newmont didn't seem to mind. They didn't sue because they didn't know in time to stop the sale to AQI? Hope that helps. If it's true. I'd sure like to ask a Newmont executive if this is how it happened.
If it's true, then two companies lost a chance at Navidad. IMA could have had Navidad cheap if they had just bought the BLEG data instead of trying to get away with it for free, AND Newmont could have had Navidad themselves if they had not packaged the BLEG data in with the Calcatreau sale. Instead, Newmont handed AQI a lawsuit worth up to a billion ounces of silver. Okay, SOLD AQI a lawsuit and Calcatreau at a bargain price considering the value of Navidad. I believe Lestercare said that the deal was done or too far along for Newmont to back out when they found out about IMA and Navidad. I sure would have liked to have heard the testimony on this point. Maybe the IMA lawyers didn't grill the Newmont folks well enough on this. They should have. Friendly testimony from Newmont was their only real hope. I guess they didn't get it. If Newmont gave them the BLEG data to be friendly, you would think they would have bailed them out with friendly testimony in court. But if Newmont testified that they felt the BLEG data WAS covered by the CA, then IMA's only argument is that Newmont never said so when they handed IMA the data nor did they specifically put it in writing that this BLEG data which we are giving you is also covered by the CA and to be used for Calcatreau evaluation purposes only.

    1.50 USD...?.... Sonnenblumen Oil ?
