Le Metropole Members,
Eric Hommelberg has served commentary at The Dos Passos
Table entiled, "JUNIOR FESTIVAL 2006 - Part I."
"When I wrote my piece '2003 - Year of the Juniors'
back in December 2002 I started off with:
"Dreaming of astronomical profits the year ahead? Dreaming
of the investment of the century? Well, here's your chance! Profits of 100% to more than 1000% are in the pipeline
next year if invested in high quality junior exploration companies! END.
"Well, I had a lucky shot I guess since the entire junior
sector exploded to the upside and appreciated by a multiple
of 100% towards the end of the year. The HUI was making
all time highs at that time topping the 250 mark for the
first time.
"Sure enough it was hallelujah time for the gold shares back
then and people bought hand over fist every gold shares they could get their hands on. Well, as we know by now that party ended up with a terrible hang-over which lasted for almost
two years. So here we are, two years later, December 2005
and again I would make the same statement as I did in December 2002:
Profits of 100% to more than 1000% are in the pipeline next..." ![]()

Nest Egg Insurance
You’ve been saving up all your life,
And your retirement time has come,
How would you like that served up, sir,
On a platter or on a bun,
I’m talkin’ about your nest egg,
And all of that hard work you’ve done,
I’m sorry to say, it got fried up, today,
And you don’t have time to grow another one
Maybe in time, you’ll get lucky,
And find a good job you can do,
Anything to get you some money,
As old age sneaks up on you,
Don’t be counting on your government,
To bail you out of this mess,
It’s like hoping to find, some real peace of mind,
In a ocean of financial stress
Don’t let this happen to you,
I can see that shock on your face,
Better go get some gold, before you’re too old,
And stash it away just in case
We all know there’s no guarantees,
We won’t have to borrow or beg,
So, how ‘bout it, some wealth insurance,
For your little old nest egg
Most people don’t see a problem,
They think that things are okay,
Someone will find a solution,
It’s always been that way,
Maybe so, in their short sweet life,
As they travel that one way street,
But they someday soon, might sing a different tune,
When the larger cycles complete
Nest egg insurance, sounds pretty funny to say,
Gold is the best nest egg insurance today

Cops to 'gun down criminals
'2005-12-29
Zambia's police chief says he has ordered police officers in the crime-ridden capital to "shoot to kill" in a move aimed at curbing the high crime rate.
Lusaka - Zambia's police chief Ehpraim Mateyo on Thursday said he ordered police officers in the crime-ridden capital to "shoot to kill" in the latest move aimed at curbing the high crime rate in the southern African country.
"Shoot to kill, that's the only message which will make them stop their criminal activities," Mateyo said when asked about a number of suspects who have been gunned down by police recently, rather than facing arrest.
Mateyo said he has "declared war on criminals" and urged his officers to "gun down criminals" who have been terrorising people, especially in the capital of Lusaka.
Police chief applauded
In the past three weeks, about 10 suspected dangerous criminals have been shot by police in different incidences, while a police officer was hit by bandits.
"I shall not relent in fighting these criminals," said Mateyo, adding he was being applauded by Zambians who have been victims of unprecedented armed robberies in recent months.
Car hijacking, heists and aggravated robberies have become a common phenomenon in Zambia with several businessmen being killed by criminals in organised attacks.
Mateyo also disbanded the notorious Flying Squad, a police rapid response unit, in an effort to reform it after some of its members were linked to criminal activities.
"I also want to get rid of criminal elements within the police service," he said.
He said in the last few weeks, the police have recovered several dangerous weapons such as AK-47 assault rifles, pistols and ammunition from homes of slain criminals.
Best of 2005
In the spirit of democracy we've decided to let you choose SA's biggest scandal of the year.It seems we've come to the end of yet another year. And for all of you who have so loyally being clicking away on MWEB's vote, we have a special treat... The Best of 2005 Vote.
This week we will be running a series Best Of Scandals votes and you are all welcome to participate.
Today's category is Politics and Business. We've carefully chosen three scandals our readers couldn't get enough of this year.
The Zuma rape case: When the Sunday Times first reported that a 31-year-old Aids activist had accused Jacob Zuma of rape, it seemed that the former deputy president might be in for another trial by media. Instead he was formally charged and is still under investigation.
Brett Kebble's death: Although not so much a scandal as a tragedy, the late mining magnate was a man who inspired both love and hatred. When Kebble's bullet-riddled body was found in his luxury vehicle on a bridge crossing the M1 to Pretoria, it sent shockwaves through the country's business circles. Speculation mounted as to whether the attack was a political assassination or an Israeli mafia hit, while the police remained mum about their investigations.
The ANC's Oilgate: The murky relationship between the African National Congress, the presidency and four South African companies was highlighted after the United Nations released a report on the Iraq oil-for-food scandal. With opposition parties baying for an official investigation into reports of underhanded dealings involving R15-million, President Thabo Mbeki was placed in an uncomfortable position after his name was dragged into the furor.
Zim heading for blue year
2005-12-28
Harare - Zimbabweans are heading for a dismal new year, with food shortages and an economic crisis expected to worsen while prospects for political change appear dimmer than ever, say analysts.
While President Robert Mugabe's government is forecasting growth of up to 3.5% in 2006, economists and ordinary Zimbabweans are bracing for more hardship.
"The problems we've had in the last seven years will definitely follow us into the new year as the economy continues shrinking," said independent economist John Robertson.
"If anything, next year will be tougher for the majority of the poeple because the government has absolutely no clue or strategy to turn around the economy," said Lovemore Matombo, president of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions.
Zimbabwe's economy has been on a downturn for most of the last decade, plagued by runaway inflation, unemployment hovering above 70% and chronic food and fuel shortages.
Tensions in the opposition
On the political front, a split in the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change has severely weakened the party that posed the most-credible challenge to Mugabe's 25-year rule.
"Prospects are gloomy politically, especially with tensions in the opposition MDC party which have dealt a setback in a force that was capable of confronting the government," said political commentator Bill Saidi.
The MDC is to hold its annual congress in February next year and judging from the squabbling dogging the party, the gathering could put the final nail in the opposition coffin.
In the coming months, United Nations food deliveries are expected to reach more than three million people in what was once the breadbasket of southern Africa.
The government blames the food deficit on drought, but analysts say the seizures since 2000 of white-owned commercial farmers for re-allocation to landless blacks has dealt a crippling blow to agriculture.
"Harvests are going to be poor because most farmers got inputs late and that means more foreign currency will be used to import food we should be producing," said Robertson.
Among ordinary Zimbabweans, the mood is depressingly dark.
"We are all literally living from hand to mouth, hardly affording to buy basic things like lunch at work," said Harare township teacher Patrick Maonwa.
Petrol attendant George Musa, who for most of this year has been working three days a week due to an acute shortage of fuel, does not hide his pessimism.
Increasingly isolated
"There is really nothing to say, there is nothing positive to predict about Zimbabwe these days."
Zimbabwe has become increasingly isolated from its former trading partners in the West after presidential elections in 2002 which foreign observers said were rigged.
Saidi said: "Economically, unless we rejoin the international community and make amends with the countries from which we isolated ourselves, our problems will remain with us."

US Government is Preparing for the 2010 FRN collapse
Being a true blooded Yankee, and only using Federal Reserve Notes (FRNs) in my daily life, I have been to Russia many times, and am struck how banks there allow one to deposit Euros, USDs, and Rubles in accounts designated in such denominations, something I can not readily do at my USA Well Fargo bank. When depositing and withdrawing these fiat moneys in Russia, one can effectively trade currencies by a simple trip to the bank, or a curb side stop. I am amused there by the hoards of street money changers virtually on every corner, vigorously shaking their Rubles in advertisement for swapping Rubles for US Dollars. I never see such events on the streets of Laguna Beach California, nor else where in the good old USA.
When the federal reserve reduced interest rates in the 2001 time frame to pump up the economy, as the exchange rate dropped, the Russians, remembering several collapses of Ruble, were very concerned, as the USD had been for years their safe haven of choice for monetary wealth preservation. I said it was a result of interest rate decreases. Not understanding USA monetary policy by common Russians, they listened to me very intently.
Common Russians, by and large, do not possess safe haven real money coinage in silver and gold, and rely on the most stable of all fiat money for wealth holdings. From my personal interactions, I have found that common Russians are educated and intelligent peoples, but are hyper-sensitive to fiat money fluctuations, and naturally so, having been twice burned badly by the Ruble collapses, especially after the fall of the Soviet Union. Many had their entire life savings wipe out over night by that fiat money, and they of course, blame it all on the USA. With respect to the gift of democracy, they seem to say, "money cant buy everything that's true, but what it can't buy, I can't use, I WANT MY MONEY BACK"!
Most Russians blame their loss of life savings on us Yankees, the cold war victors. President Reagan's military build up broke the Russians when trying to keep up militarily. Russians, unlike most Americans, have a healthy distrust of fiat money. However, they do not generally hold real money in silver and gold coinage, as it is generally not minted is large amount by the Russian central banks only offering some specialty coins with very high minting surcharges.
Now, there seems to be a new global movement afoot, and this movement is not really understood by this author. It is an undefined confluence of subtle thinking and conduct. Notwithstanding a precise understanding of this movement, it is real, and it may give Mr. Bill Murphy's GATA following some support in the very near future. Something in the fiat monetary world is definitely changing, but what? Maybe Mr. Murphy has been on target all along.
Surprisingly, the Russian central bank, in Russia having vast mine reserves, has now decided to increase its FOREX reserves, and President Putin has recently indicated that Russia's gold reserves should be increased from the current 5% to 10% or more over the next several years. But Putin's Russia still retains cultural secrecy and vertical controls as aspects of the old soviet empire in which President Putin was reared and in which he is now the de facto czar.
President Putin calls for increased bank gold reserves while Russia is now stating that its gold production has dropped. Hmmm, sounds like a possible secret Yuko's confiscation. There are also rumors that other Asian banks, such as China and Japan, may increase their gold reserves from a tiny 1% of their FOREX reserves. Other world banks seem to be taking notice as well of gold trends and ballooning US debt, as Venezuela and South Africa, inter alia, have also indicated new interest in building their gold reserves. Central bank gold sales by the EU seem to be slowing as well, if not reversed, as the British exchequer, Mr. Brown, gets repeatedly slammed for selling vast amounts of British gold reserves at the bottom of the gold price in about 2000. I suspect Britain will now think twice about selling any more gold from its reserves. There is a global movement out there and something big is afoot for sure.
When looking at global trends, this novice in the gold market, who jumped in at $270 in late 2000, sees a global trend towards hoarding gold, but why? Not a stock trader, nor a gold trader, in late 2000 when gold was low, I simply figured it was a safe long term investment, not knowing any better, and did not blink during the channel up trend corrections from late 2000 to late 2005 when Gold finally entered the so-called phase II break out. But having seriously jumped in, I started to seriously review market commentary, and particularly like the differing of opinions. With gut feelings that something big was afoot, Mr. Murphy and his gang at LeMetropoleCafe.com caught my eye.
An engineer and patent lawyer by profession, I have little training in gold markets, but one thing has, over the years, stuck in my mind. In about early 1980, I purchased a hand full of Krugerrands, then in vogue, at about $240/oz and sold at $290/oz, and thought to myself, good job, well done, and patted myself on the back, being so proud. When gold hit $850/oz, I was taken back and realized, I really did miss the boat during that bull run.
I have learned from my mistake. With my engineering training, I am comfortable with graphs. Without an expert knowledge of the gold market, I look at the graph in generic terms. I looked at the bull run then and now in three phases, first is the bull run basing, the low linear slope up in price, now characterized as a channel bull run between 2000 and late 2005. Now I suspect there should be a high linear slope increase in price, now characterized by some as phase II, and signaled by the recent break out from the 2000-05 bull run channel. After this, in about 2008, I expect, the exponential explosion, the phase III, like the 1980 curve to $850/oz. From my limited view, and for whatever reason one may choose, it seems that gold will hit at least $2750/oz about 2010-11. I wont miss the boat this time around.
But then I take a step back, as an American, as I am torn in my loyalties, between a desire for strong US dollars and personal greed in gold. I want a golden nest egg from my children, but also want a strong dollar for a healthy economy in which my children will live. But how can I have it both ways? And so I ponder this question and seek possible scenarios from those in the know. I want my cake and eat it to. While Mr. Douglas V. Gnazzo may suggest I buy a wheelbarrow to carry my 2010 FRNs, I think I will have a better use of it then. I think that a wheelbarrow for FRNs may not be necessary, the $100,000 FRN might be printed, at virtually no cost.
But, I do buy into the twin deficits that throttle the FRNs, and that, with war-hawks, bleeding hearts, and natural disasters, there really is no political end in sight to the twin deficits, at least until federal budget pay-go becomes popular again in about 2010, after the FRN then collapses, when gold hits at least $2750/oz, in my view. For most Americans, like those Russians, life time savings in FRNs will be wiped out in real value, and only then will Americans gain a healthy distrust of fiat money.
The inevitable collapse the FRN will not spell doom for the good old USA, in my view. This is the good news. The USA is the 3rd largest gold producer subject to 2010 wind-fall taxes, as in 1860 when the comstock load silver mines funded the civil war, and when the USA $20 gold coin was king in the rebel south. With increasing silver prices, the very low 117,000 million ounces in central banks can be quickly ramped up to support a global silver and gold currency, which presently exist in fact, but called as such.
The USA holds 26% of world gold bank reserves, and that matches 25% of the world profits being generated in the USA. While Mr. Murphy may claim there is a cartel suppressing Gold prices, the US seems to not be a member, as Fort Knox still seems immune to goldfinger's gold suppression attacks. There is plenty of central bank gold stocks and silver mines about to support a US real money currency. That is, it seems that the world will eventually dump fiat money, and currency traders will be history, in the out years. The FRN being the world reserve currency, will be the first of the fiat money to fall from grace, as the world banks dump the dollar, trying not to be last to bail out of FRNs. The USA national debt will also be effectively wiped out by tremendous devaluation of the FRNs, a possible intended scheme by the US Government to effectively defraud bankers and savers world wide.
There is an excellent article by Mr. Douglas V Gnazzo offering a history of US bearer notes and the FRN, the former backed by silver as a real dollar, that is, real money. The US to this day still strikes $1 silver and $50 gold coinage, real money, and I was struck (no-pun intended) that the US is still minting real money, yet also prints fiat paper money, concurrently. I am always amused by the $1 and $50 stated value on my real money coinage.
With the inevitable global collapse of fiat money between 2010-2015, the federal reserve may be preparing itself to wipe out the national debt by maintaining its gold reserves and the silver and gold minting to support a dual currency economy during a transition period using both the devalued FRN and real money. Governments can mint vast amount of real money in response to the fiat money collapse.
Global silver stocks are very low, but that would change as old mines are reopened, and gold has been retained in central banks. Silver and gold prices will explode in the FRN collapse diminishing the minting surcharge to a trivial percentage of value. It is unknown by this writer what is the current amount of minting of real money, but there is no slow down in gold jewelry purchases world wide and it seems that real money and jewelry could be easily used in a post-fiat money collapse scenario. Las Vegas may go back to the silver dollar bet, the hard way.
The real secret may be that the USA already has another back-up currency, the $1 silver and $50 Gold eagle coinage, a real money currency. When Palladium broke down below $200/oz in December 2004, that should have been an obvious buy signal, and Stillwater Mining and Northwest Territory Mint offer excellent assayed Pd rounds. In purchasing these rounds, it was realized that the US government wont recognize these Pd rounds as savings for retirement tax deductions. The IRS will honor retirement investments in US minted silver and gold eagle coinage, and hence, the infant beginning of the necessary return to real money, in the good old USA. The US $1 silver eagles have a relatively high minting surcharge, but that pales in comparison to the 95% lost of value of FRNs over the last century, and the losses to come between now and 2010 in FRNs, and will be completely made up by necessary price escalations in silver over the next few years as silver returns to at least $20/oz and maybe $100/oz in present value.
This real money believer and USA Yankee is now convinced of an FRN collapse at about 2010 and is now screaming the bi-currency rebel yell, based on the gold up trend and recent global central bank moves and the exploding national debt. It seems that one should reduce holdings of USA FRN fiat money and hold US minted eagle coinage, with the price escalation of real money exceeding that of controlled interest rates, in our route to the FRN monetary collapse in 2010. Personal FRN debt, such as a mortgage, is not a problem as long as the debt interest rates are fixed, and the writing is on the wall for refinancing variable interest rate debt into fixed interest rate debt to survive the coming collapse five to ten years hence. That is simply common sense. But it also seems that the US is now partially through retirement recognition, and is destined to be fully, a bi-currency economy, real money and fiat money, during a transition period to only real money world wide.
I can now see US banks allowing for silver and gold bank accounts with the issuance of silver and gold certificates to supplement conventional FRN accounts, similar to the Russians with their multiple fiat currency bank accounts. Mr. Gnazza will surely be pleased. As real money becomes more popular, the government will eventually get back to a quasi gold-silver standard during a transition when there is both real money and fiat money, and then to a complete global silver-gold standard in the out years. The big losers are foreign central banks holding FRNs and Americans and savers with large FRN bank accounts.
The US can, with its gold reserves, provide a solid economic currency to survive the up coming FRN collapse, wiping out FRN life time savings as US citizens and foreign central banks are burned by the uncontrolled fiat money US spending. This is, of course, just one man's opinion, but I could be right. Maybe by then, I will have retired, and take up shaking $100,000 FRNs on the streets of Laguna Beach California, using my wheelbarrow, if not to infirm, to transport the necessary $1 silver eagles coins for the street exchange at $100,000 FRNs to $1 eagle.

SHENZHEN, China -- To buy or not buy? That's a question for Chinese foreign exchange authorities. They have been urged to expand gold reserve since the Renminbi appreciation, but the decision is hard to make since the gold prices are rocketing.
Some economists have been appealing to the State Administration of Foreign Exchange to expand China's gold reserve after the Renminbi appreciation in a bid to reduce the country's reliance on the greenback.
But others believe it's not a proper time to buy gold at such high prices.
The State Administration of Foreign Exchange did not let out their voice, but folk economists have been prompting them to take actions.
China should increase its gold reserve from 600 tons to about 2,500 tons in a short term and to 3,000 tons in a long term to cope with the versatile exchange rate risks, said Teng Tai, an economist of China Galaxy Securities Company.
Too little gold reserve would pose threat not only to China, but also to the global monetary system, Teng said.
China should increase gold reserve to reduce the foreign exchanges risks and diversify its state reserve with various goods, like gold and oil, in the long run, said Shen Xiangrong, director of the Shanghai Gold Exchange, China's sole gold market.
The appeal is closely related with China's exchange rate reform on July 21 this year. The Renminbi had been pegged to U.S. dollars in the past few years before the reform. Quite a big proportion ofChina's foreign exchange reserves are bond assets denominated in the greenback. The assets will face depreciation after the Renminbi appreciation.
Global investors could benefit from buying Renminbi, but not Chinese investors and what they could buy is only gold, Teng said.
China reported about 600 tons of gold reserve at the end of June 2005, about 1.4 percent of the total foreign exchange reserve, according to figures from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The proportion is much lower in comparison with many other countries.
According to World Gold Council, many countries and organizations report more than 1,000 tons of gold reserve, including the United States, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland and the IMF.
Gold takes about 60.4 percent of the total strategic reserve in the United States, according to the Council.

Kein Wunder ![]()
So I have made my list and am checking it twice. And I don't really care who has been naughty or nice. I am just trying to set out little candles that will guide me through the Holiday night into 2006:
1. The U.S. Dollar will resume its downward devaluation in 2006, especially after Federal Reserve interest rate increases cease around mid-year and the trade imbalance approaches $1 Trillion on an annual basis..
2. The U.S. housing market will continue to retrace due to affordability and supply issues, kicking a major support out from under the economy. Home prices will decline over 10% in major American housing markets year-over-year.
3. Energy and commodity price pressure will continue to negatively impact growth in 2006 as Asian economies continue to grow well above trend for the next 2 years and supply disruptions become more frequent due to geopolitical unrest in key oil-producing regions, especially South America.
4. Inflationary expectations will continue to be a problem for financial markets while a credit/default risk premium finally filters into intermediate and long-term U.S. and corporate debt yields. However, the yield curve will invert prior to April, 2006, due to Federal Reserve concerns about Dollar stability and structural inflationary pressures.
5. The MegaBear in U.S. stocks will re-emerge in 2006 as investors seek greater liquidity, interest-bearing investments, and alternative investments such as the precious metals and other tangible, non-real estate assets; corporate earnings growth will be well-below forecast and negative in many cases.
6. Political infighting in Washington will reach a feverish pitch in 2006, an election year, to the detriment of current and future Americans and the stability of our fiscal posture in the world. The No Brainer Forecast.
7. The signs of a recession will be evident by the Third Quarter of 2006 well before the Federal Reserve under Bernanke can react with their inevitable reductions in short-term interest rates. However, Americans will not be in a position to undertake new borrowing regardless of the cost of money due to employment, income growth, and debt service constraints.
8. Military action, covert or overt, will be taken against Syria and possibly Iran on a limited strike basis to counter insurgency activities of these countries in Iraq prior to the first-stage withdrawals of American troops from this theater ....... all prior to the U.S. Fall elections.
9. The European Union, at least on a monetary basis, will show clear signs of unraveling with a subsequent underperformance by the Euro as nationalism and domestic economic interests of struggling member states take precedent over common union considerations. Gold and silver will be direct beneficiaries of this eventuality as there is no Super Currency available to take their historic places as Stores of Wealth.
10. Gold and silver will hit new Bull Market Highs in 2006 as more and more global investors realize that politicized central banks will attempt to devalue their domestic currencies indefinitely to postpone the inevitable recession and re-adjustment period ahead. Gold is forecast to hit $685 per ounce, Silver $10.65, and Palladium $415. No call on Platinum.
11. The probability is greater than 70% that we will see not One, not Two, but Three major financial institution/intermediary failures in 2006 as purportedly massive hedged bets turn out to be basically un-hedged speculations of historic magnitude.
12. Central Banks around the world, as predicted 3 years ago by this writer, will begin amassing greater gold and even silver reserves, a trend that was continued this year by China, Russia, and South American countries as political aversion to the U.S. and its currency transform into monetary action.

Pot of Gold Continues to Beckon

Six weeks ago Eric Sprott, a leading hedge fund manager and a known contrarian, had a mischievous smile on his face as he talked about gold, which had risen nearly US$50 an ounce in
six months, to US$460. "If we have a shortage in gold, the
price will go crazy," said the chief executive of
Toronto-based Sprott Asset Management. "I think gold's day
is coming. Another big run is coming."
On Dec. 12 gold hit a 25-year high of US$540.90 an ounce, an
18 percent climb since Mr. Sprott spoke. Then the price descended to US$505.70, before it stabilized on Dec. 15.
Gold has been hovering around the $500 mark for the last few weeks.
James Turk, the founder of the GoldMoney.com, based in the British Channel Island of Jersey, said on Canadian television this week that gold will hit US$600 in the first quarter of 2006, and US$900 before the year is out. Bill Murphy, who
heads the Gold Anti-Trust Action Committee, predicts gold will reach US$1,000 an ounce by the end of 2006. ![]()
Mr. Murphy's group contends the central banks and
politicians are part of a "gold cartel" that has artificially suppressed the price of gold by leaking some of the gold
held by central banks on to the market. Now, they are
running out of gold, he says.
Mr. Turk says the price increase is due to U.S. inflation, unsustainable record trade deficits, and growing federal
budget deficits that will have to be financed with newly
created dollars, cheapening that currency.
"Gold is money, and people are becoming more cognizant
of the importance of the safety and security afforded by
gold as the only money that is no one's liability," Mr.
Turk wrote in a newsletter this week. Gold's high of
US$875 an ounce in 1981, he said, would be the equivalent
of US$2,200 today.
As gold companies try to swallow each other up -- Barrick
Gold Corp. and Placer Dome Inc. on Thursday announced
their merger -- Mr. Sprott said it would take a commodity
price of US$500 an ounce to make most gold companies profitable. "Nobody's earnings in the gold industry justify
the stock prices today, and they never will because most
of us who invest in gold are looking at it prospectively.
To justify the prices, you've got to go to [US]$550 or
[US]$600."
Many people invest in shares of the bullion on the New York Stock Exchange -- 400-ounce London Good Delivery Bars held
in the vaults of HSBC Bank USA. But while share prices of
gold mining firms depend on earnings, gold bullion trades
like a currency. And the U.S. dollar has fallen 27.5 percent against the loonie in three years.
