Cumberland Commences 2005 Drill Program at Meadowbank Gold Project and Advances Development Permitting
Thursday May 5, 2:51 pm ET
VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 5, 2005--CUMBERLAND RESOURCES LTD. (TSX:CLG - News; AMEX:CLG - News) is pleased to announce that three diamond drills are active and development permitting activities are progressing at the Company's 100% owned Meadowbank gold project located 70 kilometres north of the Hamlet of Baker Lake, Nunavut. The 2005 exploration program includes a two phased diamond drilling program, planned at 7,000 to 9,000 metres, and grassroots exploration along the 25 kilometre Meadowbank gold trend. The $3.5 million exploration program is focused on increasing gold reserves and resources at Meadowbank, which is host to Canada's largest pure gold open pit gold reserves. Development permitting activities are also progressing with a recent positive conformity decision by the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) on the Meadowbank Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS). Technical meetings and pre-hearings are scheduled for early June after which the Company expects to receive guidelines for the Final EIS from the NIRB.
"We are pleased with the progress on development permitting and are optimistic that with continuing hard work from all involved parties completion can be achieved in early 2006," stated Kerry Curtis, President and CEO. "We are also pleased to commence our 2005 exploration program and build upon our excellent track record of outlining gold reserves at Meadowbank at a remarkable discovery cost of US$12 per ounce."
Cumberland is advancing Meadowbank towards open pit production of 315,000 ounces of gold per year over an 8.3 year mine life at an estimated total cash cost of US$224 per ounce. A feasibility study(1) was completed by AMEC Americas Ltd. in February 2005 and development permitting is progressing. Operations from three, shallow open pits are planned to commence in mid-2008, provided final permits and licenses are obtained in early 2006.

2005 Exploration Targets
Three drill rigs are currently active in the Phase I drill program which is focused on targets at or near existing deposits. To date approximately 2,500 metres of drilling in 15 drill holes have been completed on the Goose Island deposit, the Goose Island South target and the PDF deposit.
Significant potential exists to expand the Goose Island deposit (368,000 ounces of open pit gold reserves) both along strike and in the down dip direction. The 2005 drilling, a follow up on the significant results from the 2004 drilling program, is testing the potential to expand the designed open pit both to the north and south.
The Goose Island South target area, located approximately 300 metres south of the Goose Island proposed open pit, covers approximately 850 metres of prospective iron formation along strike from the Goose Island deposit. Mineralization intersected in wide spaced drilling completed in 1995 and 1997 is the focus of the current drilling program.
The PDF deposit, located 10 kilometres north of the Vault proposed open pit, was expanded by drilling in late 2004. The deposit now hosts inferred gold resources(3) of 73,000 ounces of gold in 507,000 tonnes grading 4.50 g/t gold, which are not included in the current mine plan. Wide spaced drilling in 2005 is focusing on the expansion potential of the deposit in the down dip direction and follow up on significant results from the 2004 program.

Das ist sicherlich ein interessantes gebiet, randgold ist ebenso nicht zu unterschaetzen. Besser als derzeit RSA !!

Historically, once gold stocks have become as weak as they are now in relative to gold, an important bottom has been made and the ratio has begun to rally. The only exception in the past fifteen years was in 2001 when a major bear market low was made. But we aren't in a gold bear market, so such an event is extremely unlikely at this point. Gold would have to go to below 350 for that to happen and that is not going to happen. The shares of the producers are now actually cheap on a valuation basis.
The divergence between the XAU and gold has reached an extreme level only seen four times in the past five years. Each time the divergence has reached this level, the XAU has put on rallies of at least 70% started within three weeks of the time of the divergence.
Although the downside is very limited, we may not have seen THE low in the XAU yet. I still think that gold is going to fall and catch up with the gold stocks. However, at this point, the weakness in the gold stocks relative to gold should be at an end. Any further drop in gold should see gold falling at a faster rate than the gold stocks and it is that type of action that marks important bottoms in both. Yesterday the stocks rose while the metal ended down. The bottom is in sight. ![]()
Randgold Resources takes a tumble
May 5, 2005
Johannesburg - London-listed gold miner Randgold Resources has reported a net profit of $12.120 million for the March quarter, down from a net profit of $15.384 million in the December 2004 quarter.
Gold revenue declined to $31.986 million in the March quarter from $33.675 million in the December 2004 quarter.
Randgold Resources has a 40 percent stake in the Morila mine in Mali, with AngloGold Ashanti holding a 40 percent stake and the Mali government holding the remaining 20 percent stake.
The group is also developing a new mine at Loulo in Mali, which is scheduled to pour its first gold in the third quarter of 2005.
Gold production of 167 272 troy ounces at $198 per ounce at the Morila mine was slightly ahead of plan on the back of higher grades, Randgold Resources said in a statement.
Throughput at Morila's recently expanded plant was again constrained by operational and mechanical problems and at 857 000 tons for the quarter, throughput was well below the design capacity of 1.050 million tons per quarter.
The company said its senior management was again working with joint venture partner AngloGold Ashanti to achieve full production consistently.
At its Loulo project, mining operations started in December 2004 and two ball mills are currently being installed.
Ongoing exploration has increased the total Loulo resource to more than eight million ounces and a study to determine the feasibility of an underground operation at the mine is scheduled for completion by the end of the June quarter.
Randgold Resources also published its annual resources and reserve declaration on Thursday, which shows a significant increase in attributable resources.
The company put its total measured, indicated and inferred resources of 10.02 million ounces compared with 7.95 million ounces at the end of 2003. The rise is mainly attributable to the growth of the Loulo resource.
The group's total proved and probable reserves were reported as 2.51 million ounces.
"We're going all out to get the opencast operation at Loulo into production and to firm up our grip on the project's underground potential. The results of the deep drilling at Yalea are very exciting and it increasingly looks like the Loulo project is going to grow into a world class mine," Randgold Resources Chief Executive Dr Mark Bristow said.
"The continued underperformance of the upgraded plant at Morila is frustrating, but we're making a renewed effort, with our partners, to understand the issues there, so that they can be addressed properly. We're also maintaining a strong focus on controlling costs," Bristow added.
Exploration programmes at and around Loulo and Morila as well as in Senegal, Burkina Faso, Ghana and Tanzania were advanced during the quarter with reconnaissance drilling in Senegal and Mali outlining significant targets for further follow up.
At Loulo, five drill rigs were in operation, testing the ore bodies at Yalea and Loulo 0, gathering advanced grade control data and probing other targets in the region.
At Morila, exploration focused on infill drilling around the pit for an updated resource estimate and mine plan, while additional targets were highlighted in that region, Randgold Resources said. - I-Net Bridge

'Where is bin Laden?'.... where is Bin Adabei ? ![]()
05/05/2005 16:51
Islamabad - Interrogators questioning al-Qaeda's reputed No 3, Abu Farraj al-Libbi, have been repeating the same two questions over and over again: "Where is bin Laden?" and "What were your plans?", a senior Pakistani intelligence official said on Thursday.
Al-Libbi remained silent for hours after his capture this week before finally confessing his identity to his interrogators, whose findings were passed on to US officials, a second intelligence official told The Associated Press.
"Only two questions are being asked, over and over, and in different shifts: 'Where is bin Laden?' and 'What were your plans?"' said the first official, who has intimate knowledge of the interrogation.
No intelligence or government official would speak about the questioning of al-Libbi on the record.
Al-Libbi was arrested on Monday after a gunbattle with security forces in northwestern Pakistan.
Information minister Sheikh Rashid confirmed to The Associated Press on Thursday that al-Libbi was still in Pakistan's custody and that he was being questioned, but declined to give details.
Two days after al-Libbi's arrest, security forces raided two homes in the northwestern tribal region of Bajor and arrested 11 terror suspects - three Uzbeks, an Afghan and seven Pakistanis.
Another intelligence official said some al-Qaeda linked militants had also been arrested in another tribal region during the past week, but refused to give details.
Meanwhile, security officials said on condition of anonymity that a junior air force technician, Mushtaq Ahmad, who was convicted and sentenced to death last year for involvement in the 2003 attacks on Musharraf has been recaptured after escaping custody in November. It wasn't clear where he was caught or when.
The attacks were allegedly masterminded by al-Libbi, but a number of military personnel have also been implicated.
Al-Libbi, who is thought to use at least five aliases, ranked below only Egyptian Ayman al-Zawahri and bin Laden himself in the terror group's hierarchy, US counter-terrorism officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Commandos seized al-Libbi along with another foreigner on Monday after a firefight outside Mardan, Pakistani officials said.
The arrests were announced on Wednesday.
The other suspect was not identified.
Witnesses said that armed Pakistani agents - some disguised in burqas, the all-encompassing garment worn by women in conservative Islamic families - ambushed two men as they rode a motorbike across a dusty graveyard on the outskirts of Mardan amid an exchange of gunfire.
The unidentifed suspect was arrested there, but al-Libbi fled to a nearby private guest house, where he tried to hide.
"I am a jihadi. Police are after me!" witness Bakht Munir quoted him as saying in the local Pashto language before the Libyan was tracked down by the commandos, who smoked him out of the guest house with tear gas and then led him away.
