  • Was Brett killing a 'mafia' hit

    29/09/2005 08:33

Johannesburg - Brett Kebble's murder is strongly reminiscent of the murder nearly two years ago of socialite Hazel Crane, ex-wife of the suspected leader of the Israeli mafia in South Africa.
Kebble, 41, was shot dead in his car on Tuesday about 21:00 on Melrose Street extension between the Glenhove and Athol Oaklands off-ramp from the M1 in Johannesburg, while he was on his way to a dinner date.

He was shot less than 800m from the place where Crane, 56, was murdered in her car on November 10 2003.

Although the police investigation into Kebble's murder is continuing, many people said on Wednesday he had been assassinated.

Convicted diamond smuggler Crane was shot four times (in the head, chest, arm and leg) at a stop street on the corner of Scott and First streets in Abbotsford in the same area in what was, seemingly, also an assassination.

She was to have testified in Johannesburg High Court against Lior Saat, another suspected member of the Israeli mafia.

    Had often received death threats

Saat was suspected at the time of murdering Shai Avissar, Crane's ex-husband.

She narrowly escaped another attempt on her life on May 21 2001 in a drive-by shooting in front of her house in Oakdale in the north of Johannesburg.

Controversial mining magnate Kebble, who had received death threats for the past six months, was shot repeatedly in the chest. Nothing was stolen in either his or Crane's murders.

Police spokesperson superintendent Chris Wilken said there was no clear motive yet for Kebble's murder.

"The similarities in the murders (of Kebble and Crane) are interesting, but merely coincidences at present," said Wilken.

"We are investigating the possibility that hijacking may have been the motive for Tuesday's murder."

He said no one had been arrested yet in connection with Crane's murder in 2003.

  • Kebble 'hijacking went wrong'

    29/09/2005 08:33

Johannesburg - Police gave more detail on Thursday on why they thought a mining magnate Brett Kebble was killed in a botched hijacking - not an assassination - this week.

"The vehicle was stationary (while) he talked to his assailants. It's very clear to us. And then from there, he was shot and he drove further," said police spokesperson Superintendent Chris Wilken.

"So that's why we are actually piecing our facts on the fact that it might have been a hijacking that went wrong."

Wilken told SAFM Morning Live an assassination attempt would more likely have taken the form of a drive-by shooting and Kebble would have been shot while driving.

Kebble was on his way to the house of his partner, Sello Rasethaba, when he was gunned down at the steering wheel of his luxury German sedan around 21:00 on Tuesday night.

He was found in Melrose on a bridge over Johannesburg's M1 freeway less than a kilometre from his home in Illovo.

Wilken said police reconstructed the circumstances of the killing on Wednesday, and found cartridges.

"We have got reason to believe that this might have been a hijacking. We are not saying it is, but we say we have reason to believe there is a possibility that it could have been a hijacking that went wrong."

Kebble family spokesperson David Barrit said on Wednesday Kebble had received threats in the past.

Asked this on Thursday, Wilken said: I have got an enormous problem with people making statements like that ... without the police knowing about that."

If these threats were reported, this was not brought to the attention of the Johannesburg police, Wilken said.

"There are statements being made and it creates enormous confusion. If there threats against people's lives, they must be reported so that they can investigated."

  • Hallo

    Gruss

Roger Kebble will not be taking over any of Brett's business interests

    ...
"We started off the businesses, I suppose together, but slowly he took a route that was more, if you like, corporate and strategically based, whereas I am just a very simple miner."
    ....
Roger, on the other hand, is the chairman of Simmer & Jack, a gold company, which is attempting to revive the Northwest Gold operations that DRDGold put into liquidation earlier this year.

"I'm going to stick to my knitting and that's going to be to do as much creation of mining opportunities as are possible, in comparison maybe to structure financing arrangements for people that are doing a similar thing," said Roger Kebble.

    Kebble case keeps SARS busy

    30/09/2005 10:47

Johannesburg - A team of investigators of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) is working around the clock to finalise the complicated affairs :D ......of murdered mining magnate Brett Kebble. :(
In the past eighteen months, a number of assessments were sent to Kebble and certain payments have been received. Some of the assessments are being disputed and negotiations are going ahead with his legal representative, Willem Heath.

SARS spokesperson Adrian Lackay said on Thursday the investigation into Kebble's affairs has been going on for two to three years. There now is a greater need for urgency to finalise matters.

The investigations are into Kebble's personal tax liability, those of his family and trust accounts and his own enterprises.

Lackay says the investigations now have to be finalised if SARS wants to claim the status of a creditor of Kebble's estate.

The amounts due to SARS are estimated to run into several millions, with speculated amounts of R100m surfacing.

Heath said SARS may make details available regarding its investigations, but no information regarding the extent of the assessments may be divulged.

    Brett CORLEONE.........and his ""Partners""................

    Kebble partners ponder future

    02/10/2005 12:59

Johannesburg - The empowerment partners of mining finance house JCI will have to reflect on what has happened, as the reality that Brett Kebble is no more sinks in.
Andile Nkuhlu, a Kebble colleague at JCI and business partner, said they would use some of the insight into what Kebble was planning to chart a way forward. :D

"Brett had shared some of his ideas with us and we have worked and have good relations with other family members," said Nkuhlu, adding that those discussions would take place after the family and the partners had mourned the loss of the mining entrepreneur.

Kebble met his death when he was in the process of handing over the day-to-day responsibilities of Western Areas, Randgold & Exploration (R&E) and JCI, the three companies he headed until late August.

That process is going to be delayed.

The decision to step down was one of the conditions from Investec which refinanced JCI.

Even at that time, Kebble remained committed to empowerment, a cause he championed better than most white business people.

"I will remain a non-executive director of JCI and will encourage the nurturing of its empowerment portfolio and support the new leadership of the companies in the JCI Group in any way I can, in the interest of all stakeholders," said Kebble in the statement announcing his stepping down.

Nkuhlu said Kebble embraced empowerment :D..even though he had the privillege of being in a position where he could not care.

The two latest developments put the empowerment deals that Kebble concluded under the spotlight.

Long-time business associate of Kebble and executive chairperson of Matodzi Resources, Sello Rasethaba, said the empowerment partners had legal contracts with JCI and those would be honoured.

"We may not get the easy terms that Kebble offered us," said Rasethaba, adding that some deals were struck at less than prime. :D

Prince Booi, director of empowerment rating agency Empower Logic, said the new board was likely to review the existing deals.

"Behind each empowerment deal there are strategies driving it towards growth. The review may be to measure whether the empowerment partners have added any value," said Booi.

He said the injection of new people would mean a fresh approach to things and that could benefit the empowerment partners.

Kebble clearly had friends in business - and they were mostly in empowerment circles. ...... (Black Mafia)

Most of his critics came from the other deals he had concluded.

Even his critics this week alluded that he had a sharp mind, making him a formidable negotiator.

At the time of his death, Kebble was in the process of explaining the transaction that involved the "missing" 14,4 million shares that R&E claimed to hold in Randgold Resources.

This was the latest in a string of Kebble dealings that left some shareholders in the companies he ran disgruntled. X( X( X(

    Kebble taken by surprise?

    03/10/2005 08:18

Pretoria - Could Brett Kebble's willingness to help out have led to his death when he was shot through the open window of his vehicle last week? A friend says Kebble was in the habit of helping stranded motorists. :D

At least six bullets from his murderer's 9 mm pistol tore through Kebble's body on Tuesday night before he tried to speed away in his Mercedes Benz S Class. He lost control of the car on Melrose Street Bridge over the M1 highway in Johannesburg and bled to death behind the steering wheel.

"There are a few things about his murder I find strange - particularly the fact his window was open on a cold evening. Brett wouldn't easily have turned down his window, particularly if he didn't feel safe. Someone must definitely have surprised him," Dominic Ntsele, a friend of Kebble's and a communications strategist, said on Sunday.

If someone's car had been stranded next to the road, Kebble would've stopped and offered to help, Ntsele said.

"Brett was the kind of guy who helped people in need. In the past, he'd often stopped for strangers to ask if he could help or phone someone for them," Ntsele explained.

Kebble and Ntsele were dining together at Kebble's house in Inanda an hour or two before the murder. Kebble then left for a second dinner with Sello Rasthaba, a business partner and head of Matodzi Resouces, at Rasthaba's house in Houghton.

    Search on for witnesses

"I don't find it strange Brett's car ended up in Melrose Street. He would've driven that way to get to Sello."

Meanwhile, police are still searching for witnesses to the murder. On Sunday afternoon a detective once again visited a dumping ground near where Kebble was shot, searching for vagrants who sleep in the area and might've seen or heard something.

John Mogotla, one of the workers at the dumping ground, denied seeing or hearing anything that night. "I was sleeping and didn't hear anything," he told police. His colleague, Andreas Molefe, said he was out of town that week and returned only on Friday. Police had apparently been searching for him all week.

The Sunday Times reported Kebble had tried to sell some of his properties, worth about R50m, in the upmarket suburbs of Bishopscourt, Cape Town, over the past 18 months - allegedly to combat cash flow and debt problems. Two of the properties were sold for about R28m. Six of the properties are still in the market for less than R5m each.

Kebble's funeral will be held at St George's Cathedral in Cape Town on Tuesday.

    Allan Gray big on Kebble
    ===================

    03/10/2005 10:03

Johannesburg - Allan Gray Investments is the only major asset manager

in South Africa to have invested in companies in which murdered mining

magnate Brett Kebble had a major interest.

The latest statement of investments of the Allan Gray Unit Trust for the

second quarter showed that had made investments in

JCI, Randgold & Exploration and Western Areas.
    ======================================

The purchases are seen as contrary to market consensus. Asset

managers are not keen on joining the volatile gold market and do it only

    after intensive research.

The largest gold investment in the General Equity Fund is in the form of

64.7m shares in JCI and 3.7m and 2.7m respectively in Randgold &

Exploration and Western Areas. These investments had remained

    unchanged from the first quarter.

The investment in JCI in Allan Gray's Balanced Fund amounts to 33.5m

JCI shares, and in the Stable Fund 13.1m shares. These two funds are

mandated to protect shareholders against risk and they comply with the

requirements of the Pension Fund Act.

Allan Gray is the third largest investor in JCI with a 9.9% interest,

following BNC Investments and Matodzi. It has an effective interest in

Randgold & Exploration of 7.8%, which makes it also the third largest

    shareholder.

Some commentators and observers asked questions about these

investments, although they are but a small portion of the total portfolios

    of these funds.

    Never, never, never again !

    Have a nice day
