Opium crop jumps to new high

Kabul - Afghanistan's opium harvest jumped by 34% this year to a new high with the country almost the exclusive supplier of the world's deadliest drug, the United Nations announced on Monday.
The southern province of Helmand had meanwhile become the world's biggest source of illicit drugs, surpassing the output of entire countries, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime said in its 2007 Annual Opium Survey.
This was despite a multi-million-dollar effort led by Britain and the United States to cut the opium trade which finances the growing Taliban insurgency that has killed thousands of people, including Western soldiers.
The production of opium, used to make heroin, had soared to "frightening record levels in 2007", the UNODC said in a statement on the survey.
The total opium harvest for the year was estimated at 8 200 tons - up from 6 100 tons last year, it said. The harvest normally ends around late July.
The area planted with opium poppies had risen to 193 000ha from 165 000 in 2006, representing a 17% rise, it said.
Afghanistan had become "practically the exclusive supplier of the world's deadliest drug", accounting for 93% of the global opiates market, the survey said.
The amount of Afghan land used for growing opium was now larger than the combined total used to grow coca - the raw ingredient for cocaine - in Colombia, Peru and Bolivia, it said.
"No other country has produced narcotics on such a deadly scale since China in the 19th century," it said.
It said opium cultivation was "closely linked" to the Taliban insurgency with the insurgents using the drug economy to fund arms, logistics and pay.
About 80% of opium poppies are grown in a handful of provinces along the border with Pakistan, where instability is worst, the survey said.

Putin the gay icon
Russian leader Vladimir Putin has inadvertently become a gay icon after stripping down to the waist on a fishing trip.
The pictures were taken while the President was on holiday with Prince Albert of Monaco in the Siberian mountains.
They have had a huge impact in Russia, turning the president into a sex symbol, an inspiration for men to start pumping iron, and the new darling of the gay lobby.
Newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda published a huge colour photo of the bare-chested President, under the headline Be Like Putin.
The picture illustrated a guide to the exercises needed to build up a torso like that of the Russian leader.
The paper reported that women who visited its website had posted comments on Mr Putin's "vigorous torso" and said they "were screaming with delight and showering him with compliments."
Russian gay chatrooms and blogs were also particularly intrigued by the photos.
One satirical photo circulating on the internet compared the fishing and riding adventure with gay cowboy movie Brokeback Mountain.
The 54-year-old leader, who is married with two daughters, has cultivated a macho image.
He is a keen downhill skier, has a black belt in judo, and has appeared on television driving a truck, operating a train, sailing on a submarine and co-piloting a fighter jet.

Zu Zeiten der Taliban wurdein Afgahnistan viel weniger Opium angebaut. Verschwörungstheorien hin oder her, die CIA hat dort wie in Mittel/Südamerika ihre Finger drin und sorgt für stetigen Heroin und Cocainnachschub in die USA.

After the mauling of the previous days, it has been a quiet week for silver with a modest 20 cent gain on the week. This kind of passivity is not unusual but rather common after large drops. As I stated last week, the longest down drops were 34 days in January 2007 and 33 days in June 2006. This one is now in its 28th day and so history suggests next week will the most likely week for more downside so caution is recommended.
But where is the big breakout we all anticipate? It was in late August that the last big run up started and October for the one before that. Both of those occurred after the 50 to 200 day moving average spread went negative. This week (as stated above) this spread went further into negative territory on -14 cents. For now, I am holding on the buy trigger until the 50 day moves back above the 200 day to complete the "kiss" move.
I note also that gold is faithfully holding its 200 day moving average during this downturn which to means is a positive sign of things to come.
As we know silver is not an island in the investment world. Outside events affect its price and this was brought home to us during the subprime mortgage debacle which led to liquidation of various assets to pay the hedge fund margin calls. The question is whether that is all behind us or is silver still vulnerable to outside events?
Will the Dow Jones fall further or is the worst over? The debate is unsurprisingly divided on that issue. I pulled up my chart of the Dow Jones Industrial Average Index and noted it had like gold faithfully bounced off its 200 day moving average (see attached chart). Also, the developing Elliott Wave pattern suggest that we are NOT in a crash scenario although that does not mean that the correction is over. I have added comments to that end on the chart. My suggestion is that a corrective ABC wave may have completed on the Dow Jones which ended on the 200 day moving average. If this was the beginning of a crash, it should begin with an impulse wave (i.e. 12345 wave). The unfolding wave does not suggest that for now and I would say that if the Dow Jones closes above the B wave (13670), this will be confirmed.
However, a larger non-crash corrective wave may yet unfold and instigate a final drop into the high 11000s which will give the impression that doomsday has arrived. Be prepared for such a final move down.

Also das halte ich doch für sehr untertrieben.
Es gibt bestimmt sehr viel mehr Unzen, die auf den Markt kommen könnten, auch wenn der Silberfan in mir eher Deine Zahlen begrüßen würde.
Ich gehe da lieber auf Nummer Sicher und eher von 10 bis 20 Milliarden Unzen aus, die irgendwo und in welcher Form auch immer (Barren, Münzen, Leuchter, Besteck, Schmuck, weiss der Geier) gebunkert sind .
Aber selbst wenn es sogar 20 Milliarden Unzen wären, entspräche das ja gerade mal der 4fachen Menge des Goldes (5 Milliarden Unzen).

Trotz Häuser-Krise

Die amerikanischen Börsen haben sich zu Wochenbeginn wacker geschlagen: Trotz einer Rallye vor dem Wochenende und schwacher Häuserdaten ging es für die großen Indizes nur leicht bergab: Der Dow-Jones-Index verlor 56,74 Zähler oder 0,42 Prozent auf 13 322 Punkte.
Der marktbreit gefasste S&P-500-Index gab um 12,58 Zähler oder 0,85 Prozent auf 1466 Punkte nach, und die Hightech-orientierte Nasdaq rutschte um 15,44 Zähler oder 0,6 Prozent auf 2561 Punkte ab.
Dabei kam nach den guten Verkaufsdaten für Neubauten am Freitag am Montagmorgen ein dicker Hammer aufs Parkett. Die Zahl der verkauften bestehenden Häuser ist gefallen, der Bestand an unverkauften Häusern so hoch wie seit 16 Jahren nicht mehr. Das Inventar ist um 2,2 Prozent auf 3,85 Millionen Häuser angewachsen, was sich vor allem auf die Aktien der Baubranche verheerend auswirkte: Toll Brothers und Lennar verloren jeweils rund 4 Prozent, Hovnanian rutschte um 5 Prozent ab.
