Angloplat opposes Swiss plan for platinum ETF

    By: Reuters
    Published: 17 Apr 07 - 11:59

The world's biggest platinum producer Angloplat will not supply physical metal to a planned exchange-traded fund based on platinum because it would sharpen supply shortages, the firm said on Tuesday.

"The reason why we as a producer are opposed to it is that it takes metal away from physical consumption and therefore would push the price up," said Trevor Raymond, senior manager of investor relations at South Africa's Anglo Platinum.

Switzerland's Zurich Cantonal Bank planned to launch ETFs based on platinum, palladium and silver from next month, it said in a statement dated April 13.

........"To establish an ETF in platinum would be difficult given the shortness of supply of the metal and we don't believe any of the producers would support it," Raymond said.

Second-ranking Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd was not immediately available to comment......

Nymex to launch first uranium contract

By Saskia Scholtes in New York

    Published: April 16 2007 21:11 | Last updated: April 16 2007 21:11

The New York Mercantile Exchange plans to launch next month the first futures contract for uranium amid mounting investor interest in the metal.

The contract for uranium, which is used to fuel nuclear reactors, will provide a way to hedge against rising uranium prices for operators of nuclear power.

It will give hedge funds and other investors a direct way to speculate on movements in uranium prices, rather than investing in uranium mining companies.

Investor interest in uranium has risen dramatically during the past two years, as spot prices have climbed more than fivefold amid growing demand for nuclear power.

Richard Schaeffer, chairman of Nymex, said: “We expect to create a benchmark contract for this important and under-served global market.”

The futures contract will be cash-settled, removing the need for traders to provide a physical delivery point.

Uranium is not exchange-traded, so spot prices are compiled based on industry contracts. Ux Consulting will provide pricing for the new contracts.

Ian Henderson, manager of the JPMorgan Natural Resources Fund, said more than 400 power plants globally depended on uranium to generate energy, with 80 plants under construction or planned for completion within the next 10 years.

He added: “After a 20-year pause in uranium exploration, the supply side of the industry is unprepared to react quickly to the market’s recent price signals.”

    Metals

London - Precious metals hit fresh peaks again yesterday as new exchange-traded funds (ETFs) lifted palladium and platinum, and gold stopped $1 (R7.09) short of an 11-month high on a weak dollar.

Platinum and palladium touched five- and 11-month highs, respectively, after Zurich Cantonal Bank said it would launch ETFs in the metals next month. Gold rose $4.75 to $686.50 an ounce at the second fix in London, off a seven-week best of $688.10. - Reuters

    The Associated Press
    Published: April 13, 2007

NEW YORK: Nymex Holdings Inc. is planning to list a uranium futures contract, people familiar with the situation said Friday, as the energy and metals exchange looks to capitalize on surging interest in the nuclear fuel.

The futures contract would provide nuclear power plants with a vehicle to hedge against rising prices that have surged more than tenfold in the past four years as commercial stockpiles dwindle and more plants are built. It would also provide a forum to bet directly on gains and falls in the price of uranium, rather than speculating on the fortunes of miners.

The contract would be cash-settled, eliminating the need for a delivery point for the radioactive material, the sources said.

"Uranium has been the market to be in over the past couple of years," said Phil Flynn, an analyst at Alaron Trading Corp., which trades both energy and metals from its Chicago office. "Whenever you get a run like this in something that's not listed" exchanges see it as a chance to list a new contract, Flynn said.

The people familiar with the situation, who declined to be named, said Nymex had been contacting potential traders of the contract regarding the new listing. Nymex declined to comment on whether it planned to list the contract.

Shares of Nymex slipped 94 cents to close Friday at $131.34 on the New York Stock Exchange.

St. LOUIS (ResourceInvestor.com) -- Bitterroot Resources announced yesterday that drilling at Michigans Jacobsville Basin returned a 0.6 metre intersection that contains 75 parts per million (ppm) U3O8, including 0.12 metre intervals of over 100 ppm uranium. Although investors were unimpressed with the find, at least one analyst sees a buy opportunity.

Mad, bad and dangerous to believe

If Edward Pastorini is going to bid for Gold Fields, perhaps Richard Branson is going to have a go at Microsoft.

    JOHANNESBURG -

On Wednesday, Bloomberg, a wire service, baldly stated that: "US financier Edward Pastorini may lead a bid for Gold Fields Ltd., the world's fourth-largest gold producer, to tap the rising price of bullion".

In reaction, a top-rated sales-trader in London said: "Sounds like a FURFEY to me!" A precious metals analyst, also based in London, commented: "Hedge fund trying to exit or Barrick trying to sell its block of shares? I am a born cynic, until otherwise proven wrong". A London-based specialist gold analyst said: "Slow news day at Bloomberg I guess!!"

......Did you ever know an accident was about to occur before it did? That's the way I view US policy......
....I have been wondering for weeks now if the HUI will follow gold up or the Dow down. As of today I do not have a definitive answer but as you can see above, the HUI is being compressed into a tighter and tighter range with a series of higher lows and lower highs. We are coming to a crucial moment in time where there will be a breakout in one direction or the other. Given the fact that this is a bull market, the odds heavily favor a breakout to the upside but the fly in the ointment could be the Dow.If the Dow rallies until mid-June than I suspect new highs will be made but if the Dow turns down this week, it might be a different story. We'll just have to wait and see. In the meantime I am long gold, silver, and gold stocks and that will not change........
