    Newfoundland gold exploration heats-up

A claim staking rush has been taking place by numerous junior exploration companies in the large southwest to northeast-trending region known as the Central Newfoundland Gold Belt (CNGB) that stretches almost across the entire island of Newfoundland – almost 250 km in length.
New Found Gold Corp. [NFG-TSXV; NFGFF-OTC] is advancing its large 100%-owned high-grade Queensway Gold Project on the Trans-Canada Highway 15km west of Gander where a 200,000-metre drill campaign is underway. Drilling at the Keats discovery has returned 19.0 metres of 92.9 g/t gold and 18.9 metres of 31.2 g/t gold. Drilling at the Lotto Discovery returned 4.8 metres of 41.2 g/t gold and 5.2 metres of 25.4 g/t gold.
The most advanced project is Marathon Gold Corp.’s [MOZ-TSX] 100%-owned Valentine Gold Project 55 km southwest of Buchans that comprises a series of mineralized deposits along a 20-kilometre trend. A March 2021 positive Feasibility Study outlined an open pit mining and conventional milling operation over a 13-year mine life. This will be the largest gold mine in Atlantic Canada.
Sky Gold Corp. [SKYG-TSXV] is exploring its Mustang Project in east-central Newfoundland that hosts the Outlaw prospect comprised of the Mustang and Piper mineralized zones adjacent to New Found Gold’s intercept of 92.9 g/t gold over 19 metres.
Labrador Gold Corp.’s [LAB-TSXV] early-stage Kingsway Gold Project hosts two different styles of gold mineralization on the 77 km2 property along strike from the Keats and Lotto Zones of New Found Gold to the south.
Golden Ridge Resources Ltd.’s [GLDN-TSXV] field crews have arrived on site and have begun the 2021 field program on the Williams gold property located within New Found Gold Corp.’s Queensway South gold project. The first phase of the 2021 program will focus on prospecting, mapping and delineating precise trenching/channeling locations. The company also holds the Heritage and Greenfields Portfolio gold-silver properties in Newfoundland.
Sassy Resources Corp. [SASY-CSE], through its subsidiary, Gander Gold Corp., has expanded its Newfoundland property holdings from 1,381 km2 to 2,257 km2.
The 876 km2 newly acquired claims cover a large portion of the Mount Peyton Intrusive and Gabbroic Complex between New Found Gold’s Keats Zone and Sokoman Minerals’ Moosehead discovery. The claims were staked by and optioned from prospector Shawn Ryan and Wildwood Exploration Inc. whose extensive area research has recently led to a new understanding of the potential of the under-explored Mount Peyton Intrusive.
Sokoman Minerals Corp. [SIC-TSXV; SICNF-OTCQB] has intersected additional high-grade gold mineralization at both the Eastern trend and South Pond zones during its Phase 6 drilling at the 100%-owned Moosehead property in central Newfoundland. Sokoman recently executed two property option agreements on behalf of the strategic alliance between the company and Benton Resources Inc. [BEX-TSXV; BNTRF-OTC] to add additional mineral claims to the Grey River gold property. Both Sokoman and Benton have other properties in Newfoundland.
Sokoman’s Crippleback property is optioned to Trans Canada Gold Corp. [TTG-TSXV] and its East Alder property is optioned to Canterra Minerals Corp. [CTM-TSXV; CTMCF-OTC].
Anaconda Mining Inc. [ANX-TSX] has an exploration program for summer and fall 2021 near the company’s 100%-owned Point Rousse operation in the Baie Verte mining district.
Canstar Resources Inc. [ROX-TSXV] has an option to acquire a 100% interest in the Golden Baie Project, a 62,175-hectare claim package with recently discovered, multiple outcropping gold occurrences on a major structural trend in south Newfoundland.
Spruce Ridge Resources Ltd. [SHL-TSXV] has received the results of an updated mineral resource estimate for the Great Burnt copper and gold property in central Newfoundland, which incorporates the results of the 2020 diamond drilling program on the Great Burnt main zone.
Great Atlantic Resources Corp. [GR-TSXV; PH0-FSE] is drilling its Golden Promise gold property in the central Newfoundland gold belt. The first hole at the Jaclyn Main Zone intersected multiple quartz veins with visible gold evident in one vein.
Maritime Resources Corp. [MAE-TSXV] has released drill results from its continuing 40,000-metre exploration program at the Hammerdown gold project and its Whisker Valley property, in the Baie Verte mining district of Newfoundland. At the Orion North Zone, a new near-surface zone traced over 550 metres, drill hole BB-21-170 intersected 12.43 g/t gold and 2.15 g/t silver over 1.20 metres, including 50.60 g/t gold and 7.90 g/t silver over 0.20 metres.
Tru Precious Metals Corp. [TRU-TSXV] has signed an option agreement to acquire five mineral licences covering 12.75 km2 in west-central Newfoundland, on which the company has found visible gold. The optioned claims are contiguous with the company’s flagship Golden Rose project. In addition, the company indirectly staked a larger land package surrounding the optioned claims.
Cartier Iron Corp. [CFE-CSE] reported diamond drilling intersected 0.62 g/t gold and 16.12 g/t silver over 13.0 metres in a low sulphidation epithermal Au-Ag system at its Big Easy Gold Project in eastern Newfoundland.
The above companies are not the only explorers targeting the Central Newfoundland Gold Belt. Considering the fact that the belt trends across most of the island, suffice to say that the Newfoundland Gold Camp is shaping up to be a major mining camp in this most favorable of mining jurisdictions.

Is China winning the quantum computer war?
China has a more sophisticated quantum network and now claims the top two quantum computers

by Dave Makichuk July 16, 2021

A team in China recently demonstrated that it has the world’s most powerful quantum computer, leapfrogging the previous record holder, Google.
Jian-Wei Pan at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei and his colleagues say their quantum computer has solved a problem in just over an hour that would take the world’s most powerful classical supercomputer eight years to crack, and may yet be capable of exponentially higher performance.
That, and other recent announcements coming out of China have raised concerns in the US that it is losing the so-called “quantum race.”
According to a report in Scientific American, in three papers posted on arXiv.org last month, physicists at USTC reported critical advances in both quantum communication and quantum computing.
In one of the studies, researchers used nanometer-scale semiconductors called quantum dots to reliably transmit single photons — an essential resource for any quantum network — over 300 kilometers of fiber, well over 100 times farther than previous attempts.
In another, scientists improved their photonic quantum computer from 76 detected photons to 113, a dramatic upgrade to its “quantum advantage,” or how much faster it is than classical computers at one specific task.
The third paper introduced Zuchongzhi, made of 66 superconducting qubits, and performed a problem with 56 of them — a figure similar to the 53 qubits used in Google’s quantum computer Sycamore, which set a performance record in 2019.
Every additional qubit makes the quantum processor exponentially more powerful, which is why all of these advances are such a big deal.
“It’s an exciting development. I did not know that they were coming out with not one but two of these [quantum computing results] in the same week,” says Scott Aaronson, a theoretical computer scientist at the University of Texas at Austin. “That’s pretty insane.”
All three achievements are world-leading, but Zuchongzhi in particular has scientists talking because it is the first corroboration of Google’s landmark 2019 result.
“Our work establishes an unambiguous quantum computational advantage that is infeasible for classical computation in a reasonable amount of time,” the researchers explain in a preprint paper describing the experiment.
“The high-precision and programmable quantum computing platform opens a new door to explore novel many-body phenomena and implement complex quantum algorithms.”
With so many prototype quantum computers around, you might wonder why some scientists still question whether quantum computing will ever become practical technology.
That’s because the machines in use today remain experimental, and require very precise, super-cold lab conditions in order to operate, usually for very short periods of time.
None of this research is likely to be of practical use for many years to come.
But the geopolitical stakes are high: quantum networks could provide unhackable channels of communication, and a powerful quantum computer could theoretically break much of the encryption currently used to secure e-mails and Internet transactions.
Tensions between the US and China are currently at their highest point in decades, with the countries clashing over trade, human rights issues, Covid and Taiwan.
In 2019 a team at Google led by researcher John Martinis realized the so-called quantum advantage by demonstrating that the company’s Sycamore system really could perform a specific, limited task exponentially faster than even powerful classical supercomputers.
A year later USTC researchers performed a similar experiment with a quantum computer made from photons.
Why can rudimentary quantum computers beat classical supercomputers?
The common refrain goes something like this: Instead of classical bits that are 0 or 1, a quantum computer uses qubits, whose state is somewhere in between 0 and 1 prior to measurement — a so-called quantum superposition.
To work together within a computer, qubits must also be entangled, or quantum correlated with one another.
But it’s worth noting that there are different approaches to quantum computing: Zuchongzhi uses optical circuits and photons to manage and process its qubits, whereas Sycamore is based on electrons and superconductors. There can also be differences in how results are calculated and measured.
Versatility is also a vital consideration — whether a quantum computer can perform multiple tasks or just a single one that it was specifically designed for (both Sycamore and Zuchongzhi score highly here, and can take on multiple tasks).
“If you look at the West — the US, Europe — there haven’t been a lot of people talking about repeating [Google’s 2019] experiment,” Martinis says. “I admire, in China, that they want to do this seriously.”
With 56 qubits and 113 detected photons, the USTC systems are now technically the most powerful quantum computers in the world — with two big caveats.
First, neither quantum computer can do anything useful. (Photonic quantum computing is not a universal computer platform, so even scaled up, it would not be a conventional programmable computer.)
Second, it is not clear exactly how much of a quantum advantage they actually have over classical computers. Over the past few months, several studies have claimed the ability to approximate that messy entangled state, especially for photonic quantum computers.
So, is China ahead of the US in quantum information technology?
The answer depends on how you measure it.
China has more total patents across the full spectrum of quantum technology, but US companies have a dramatic lead in quantum computing patents.
And of course, China has a more sophisticated quantum network and now claims the top two quantum computers.
“It’s such a new problem for the US to be facing,” says Mitch Ambrose, a science policy analyst at the American Institute of Physics.
“It was ahead for so long, and in so many areas, that it hasn’t really had to do much thinking about what it means to be behind.”
Broadly speaking, quantum research in China is almost entirely state driven — concentrated into a few universities and companies. Research in the US, in comparison, is much more disparate — spread across dozens of universities and private companies.
Forbes Magazine reports that President Xi funded a multi-billion-dollar quantum computing mega-project with the expectation of achieving significant quantum breakthroughs by 2030.
He also committed billions to establish a Chinese National Laboratory for Quantum Information Sciences.
Examine Chinese research output over the past two years, and you’ll see that President Xi’s quantum push is working.
In December 2018, President Trump signed H.R. 6227 to fund the National Quantum Initiative Act (NQI). The law authorizes US$1.2 billion to be invested in quantum information science over five years.
A few days after the executive order was signed, the Department of Energy announced US$80 million in funding for quantum research.
Although these are positive actions, they are small compared to the enormous investments being made in quantum research by the Chinese.
We are witnessing a quantum battle that will be fought in research labs by brains instead of guns, and by scientists instead of soldiers. Moreover, the critical ammunition for this battle is research funding.
“The Chinese government is thinking about science technology very seriously, probably more than the US administration” said Zuoyue Wang, a science historian at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
“No one else will pick up the tab.”

    LBMA gets a lifeline
    By Alasdair Macleod

The draft PRA rules complying with Basel 3 regulations have now
been issued six months ahead of their implementation to allow banks to
adjust for them in time. From now, senior bankers, their lawyers and
bank treasury managers will be planning amendments to their business
    strategies accordingly.

    As a division of the
Bank of England, the Prudential Regulation Authority recognises the
importance of gold trading in London and has inserted a clause into the
new rules (Article 428f) which will allow the LBMA’s centralised
settlement system to continue to function. But in line with Basel 3’s
apparent determination to get banking’s exposure to uneven derivative
positions substantially reduced, net positions in precious metal
derivatives in the form of forwards and swaps will be penalised through
their inefficient use of balance sheet resources and will likely be
replaced by transactions fully backed by physical gold.

    The
LBMA has been thrown a lifeline but will likely have to refocus from
forward derivatives to physical bullion backed trading. By responding
positively to these developments, the LBMA and its membership can retain
and build on their pre-eminent position in global precious metals
    markets.

This article points out that the market
value of forward derivatives in gold is currently the equivalent of
8,675 tonnes. While it would be incorrect to think it will all translate
into new bullion demand, there is little doubt that if Basel 3 leads to
the demise of the London forwards market, it will lead in turn to a
significant replacement in the form of physical demand.

    This
article also looks at the broader picture for banking in the light of
the PRA’s new regulations as well as the specifics for precious metal
    derivatives.

Vancouver-based International Consolidated Uranium (CUR) has agreed to buy the Tony M, Daneros and Rim conventional uranium mines in Utah, as well as the Sage Plain property and eight Department of Energy leases in Colorado from Energy Fuels Inc. In addition, the companies have agreed to enter into toll-milling and operating agreements with respect to the projects. The transaction positions CUR as a potential near-term US uranium producer.

Under a definitive asset purchase agreement announced yesterday, CUR will pay Energy Fuels USD2 million at the closing of the transaction, CAD6 million (USD4.8 million) of deferred cash payable over time, up to CAD5 million of deferred cash payable on commencement of commercial production, and such number of CUR shares that results in Energy Fuels holding 19.9% of the outstanding CUR common shares immediately after closing. CUR will also pay Energy Fuels a management fee, along with a toll milling fee for ore produced at the acquired projects in the future.
The portfolio of projects being acquired by CUR includes, among other assets, three permitted, past-producing mines in Utah: Tony M, Daneros and Rim.
The Tony M mine in southeastern Utah is a large-scale, fully-developed and permitted underground mine. Located about 127 road miles west of Energy Fuels' White Mesa Mill, the mine was operated by Denison from September 2007 to November 2008, when it was placed on care and maintenance. In June 2012, Energy Fuels acquired all of Denison's uranium properties in the USA.
The Daneros mine - located about 70 miles west of the White Mesa Mill - is a fully-developed and permitted underground mine. It operated from 2009 until October 2012 when the mine was placed on standby by Denison.
The Rim mine is a permitted, formerly producing mine located approximately 62 road miles from the White Mesa Mill. The mine has operated historically on a periodic basis starting in the mid-1960s. Mining last occurred in early 2008 by Denison and ceased in late 2010. Energy Fuels acquired the property in 2012 and has maintained it on care and maintenance since that time.
The transaction also includes CIR's acquisition of the Sage Plain property in Utah and eight Department of Energy (DOE) leases in Colorado. The project area - some 54 road miles from the White Mesa Mill - is at the location of the historic Calliham mine. The DOE leases are located in the historically productive Uravan Mineral Belt in Colorado. The leases are located 80-175 road miles from the White Mesa Mill. New 10-year leases for these lease tracts were executed by Energy Fuels in January 2020.

    Strategic alliance

CUR and Energy Fuels have also entered a strategic alliance for the projects, which involves three key components: a toll-milling agreement, operating agreements and an investor rights agreement.
Under the toll-milling, Energy Fuels will toll-mill ore mined from the projects at the White Mesa Mill, subject to payment by CUR of a toll-milling fee and certain other terms and conditions. With this agreement, CUR will become the only current US uranium developer - other than Energy Fuels itself - with guaranteed access to the White Mesa Mill, which is the only permitted and operating conventional uranium mill in the USA.
Through the operating agreements, Energy Fuels will provide ongoing services for a fee to maintain the projects in good standing, as well as additional services as agreed to by the parties.
Under the investor rights agreement, for so long as Energy Fuels' equity ownership in CUR remains at or above 10%, it will be entitled to equity participation rights to maintain its pro rata equity ownership in CUR and to appoint one nominee to the CUR Board of Directors.

    Growth strategies

"Our strategy has been to acquire uranium projects around the world, create critical mass, and target the acquisition of larger, more advanced projects," said CUR President and CEO Philip Williams. "While the recently announced acquisition of the high-grade Matoush Project in Quebec was a big step forward for CUR, today's acquisition and alliance with Energy Fuels represents a giant leap. In one transaction, we are entering the important US uranium sector by acquiring past producing mines which are permitted and well positioned for a rapid restart when market conditions are right."
CUR has acquired a 100% interest or has entered into option agreements to acquire a 100% interest in seven uranium projects, in Australia, Canada and Argentina, each with significant past expenditures and attractive characteristics for development.
Energy Fuels holds three of the USA's key uranium production centres: the White Mesa Mill in Utah, the Nichols Ranch ISR Project in Wyoming and the Alta Mesa ISR Project in Texas. The White Mesa Mill is the only conventional uranium mill operating in the USA today, has a licensed capacity of over 8 million pounds of U3O8 per year and has the ability to produce vanadium when market conditions warrant.
"The assets we are selling to CUR are proven US uranium mines, and in fact production from these mines since 2006 has accounted for over 1,050,000 lbs of US uranium production, which would rank those mines as fifth among all current uranium producers in the US over those years," said Energy Fuels President and CEO Mark Chalmers.
"However, because Energy Fuels is focusing its attention on its core projects - the Nichols Ranch and Alta Mesa ISR properties and the Pinyon Plain, La Sal and other conventional properties - we do not believe markets have properly valued the projects within our expansive portfolio of exceptional assets," he added. "We believe that, in order to realise the full value of our expansive portfolio, certain assets, such as the projects, can be repositioned to the benefit of Energy Fuels and its shareholders, provided we find the right vehicle to unlock the value of these assets. In this transaction, we believe we have found that vehicle in CUR."

This “Temporary” Inflation Is Turning into an Inflation Spiral

    by Wolf Richter • Jul 15, 2021

This year, inflation blasted off with a vengeance, and the last four months have seen the hottest pace of inflation since the 1980s.
The consumer price index – the CPI – rose 5% year-over-year for May. The June reading will come out in a couple of days [update: June CPI came in at 5.4%]. 5% of annual inflation is bad enough. But the pace of inflation over the past four months has been much higher, clocking in at over 8% annualized.
Surely, some inflation measures will tick down in the near future, giving everyone false hopes, before rising again. The first bout of inflation always looks temporary. But during those first bouts of inflation, that’s when the triggers of “persistent” inflation – namely the inflationary mindset and inflation expectations – are being unleashed.
So now the Fed keeps repeating time after time that this is temporary and that it will go away on its own because it was caused by temporary factors, namely a demand shock that occurred because the government spread $5 trillion in borrowed stimulus money since March last year; and because the Fed printed $4 trillion over the same period and repressed interest rates to 0%.
This moolah stimulated consumption, in a huge way, and it caused a historic spike in demand for goods, and there are now cascading shortages from ammo to semiconductors, made worse by container shortages and transportation bottlenecks.
But the fiscal and monetary stimuli are still ongoing. The government and the Fed still have the foot fully on the accelerator.
There are all kinds of temporary problems that are causing price spikes here and there. The supply-chain bottlenecks, the difficulties companies have in hiring people, the shortages, the various spikes in commodities, and the price increases in services that have nothing to do with any of the shortages. Contractors and professional services providers are raising their fees, and they can do it suddenly and get away with it and not lose business.
And these price increases are now balling up. Companies are raising prices, companies and consumers are paying those higher prices, and companies are paying higher wages, while the government is stimulating demand with deficit spending, and the Fed is stimulating demand with money printing and 0% interest rates, and no one is resisting the price increases anymore.
And so much cash has been created and handed out that price doesn’t even matter anymore.
People are paying whatever – even for discretionary purchases that they don’t have to buy, such as cars. Most people could easily wait a couple of years instead of buying a car now, but now the whole mindset has changed, and they want to buy now, no matter what the price.
And this change in mindset caused used vehicle prices to surge by over 30%. I’ve never seen anything even close to this, and I’ve been around when inflation ravaged the economy in the late 1970s and early 1980s, until the Volcker Fed finally cracked down on it, triggering a very rough double-dip recession that eventually knocked the wind out of inflation.
So now we have these price spikes cascading from product to product, and from service to service. This surge of inflation is becoming ingrained in the inflation expectations of company decision makers and consumers alike, and they’re adjusting to it, and in this manner inflation becomes persistent.
Even economists are now getting the message. According to a Wall Street Journal poll of those economists, their average forecast for the end of next year in terms of core inflation – which excludes food and energy – has risen to 3.2%.
But wait… They’re using the lowest lowball inflation measure available in the US, namely the “core PCE” inflation measure that the Fed uses as its target and that normally runs far lower than the standard CPI that is cited in the news media.
This core PCE inflation measure, the lowest lowball measure of the land, well, March, April, and May combined produced an annualized core PCE inflation rate of 6.4%, meaning that if price-increases continue for 12 months at the pace of those three months, the annual inflation rate would be 6.4%. That’s over three times the Fed’s target of 2%.
This was the red-hottest three-month annualized inflation rate since August 1983.
So these economists polled by the Wall Street Journal also assume that inflation will back off from the current pace and drop to 3.2% by the end of 2020, This would still be the highest inflation rate since the early 1990s, and that’s far below where inflation is today, and it assumes the best case scenario, that inflation backs off from the current pace.
“We’re in a transitional phase right now,” one of those economists told the Wall Street Journal. “We’re transitioning to a higher period of inflation and interest rates than we have had over the last 20 years.”
No kidding. Even economists are coming to grips with it. Just not the Fed, at least not publicly.
So it’s dawning on economists that the overall inflationary environment isn’t transitory, but persistent, though some factors that have triggered the unleashing of the inflationary cascade are transitory. And this higher inflation is a generational change.
People who became adults in the 1990s or later have never experienced this kind of inflation. They don’t know what it’s like when prices jump, one item here, then the next day another item or service there.
For some people, pay increases make up for inflation, and that includes pay increases based on performance and productivity that were supposed to make you be able to buy more goods and services, but you need every penny of that performance raise just to maintain your standard of living.
And for other people, pay doesn’t rise enough to compensate for inflation, and they have to cut back their standard of living.
Companies are facing rampant cost increases.
There is now a lot of clamoring among economists and Wall Streeters that the Fed will wait too long, fall too far behind the curve, keep stimulating for too long despite rampant inflation, and thereby trigger an inflation spiral that would be hard to bring under control, and that these belated efforts to bring inflation under control when it’s totally out of control would wreck the economy and asset prices.
They’re not worried about hyperinflation. They’re worried about 5%, 7%, 10% inflation for years. That kind of inflation would blow all kinds of assumptions out of the water. No one is ready for this.
This type of inflation makes long-term planning difficult for companies, and it’s a drag on the economy, and it’s a drag on real consumer spending.
Long-term interest rates will either surge to meet and transcend those inflation levels, if markets are allowed to react to inflation; or the Fed represses long-term interest rates by buying assets, and that will further heat up inflation, and investors like pension funds and insurers that invest in bonds, will see the purchasing power of their investments get wiped out, when they earn 2% for years in an 8% inflation environment.
More likely is that markets will eventually be allowed to react to inflation to some extent, which will cause a rise in interest rates, which is the way to tamp down on inflation, but which will make it much harder for junk-rated companies to borrow, triggering waves of defaults. Defaults and higher borrowing costs would hit stock prices.
And consumers, my gosh, even those whose incomes keep up with inflation. When inflation is persistent at 5% or 8%, and markets are allowed to react, then mortgage rates rise to meet or exceed those inflation levels. With the sky-high home prices right now, those higher rates would move house payments totally out of range for potential buyers, and demand dries up.
For the market to unfreeze, home prices would have to come down to bring those mortgage payments back into reach. There is a whole generation of home buyers and home sellers and real estate professionals and loan officers and mortgage brokers out there that have never experienced anything like this.
This move to higher inflation can be very disruptive to the economy, to planning by households and businesses, and to spending patterns.
This persistent inflation is what is being triggered right now by the fiscal and monetary stimulus and by the temporary inflation spikes. And the Fed, by putting that issue officially on “ignore,” is making it far worse.
