    Bill,

There’s so much in the news these days that it’s easy to overlook some juicy tidbits. For instance, why is it that the $2 billion investment by Bank of America in Countrywide was front page news in August while the company’s new $12 billion financing is buried on the business pages? Isn’t it funny, too, that Countrywide didn’t specify who is providing all that money, saying only that it comes from "new or existing credit lines." There was no comment, either, on the credit or interest terms—this for $12 billion! It makes me suspect that Countrywide’s new angel isn’t the B of A, but rather the B of B; the Bank of Bernanke.

Then there’s the news that loans at the Fed’s discount window for stressed-out banks jumped from $1 billion to $7 billion in the last week. Does that sound like things are improving? Guess not, so you better look carefully to find it.

It is interesting that September has arrived and with it the first major bank run —Northern Rock in England. While August brought a whiff of panic to the financial markets, this is the first time that fear is openly seen on Main Street. Here are some customer comments*:

"Everything we have in our lives is in there," former hotel owner Fiona Howard told the tabloid. "We would be left with nothing if it is lost."

'"I just can't take the risk of there suddenly being an announcement that ... there's been another problem and they've closed the bank," one customer told Sky News. "I'm erring on the side of caution."

Another customer, Tony Looch, 68, told the BBC: "My confidence is shattered."

Central Banks were created as bulwarks against the collapse of credit and confidence, but central bankers are not always up to the task. For instance, during the Great Depression, the central bankers did not rescue banks with questionable assets. The bankers chose to protect their own positions over those of the public-at-large.

The result was global disaster. In Austria the country’s largest bank, the Kreditanstalt of Vienna, collapsed. Dragged down with it were all of Europe’s economy and many foreign banks. In America, more than 9,000 American banks closed their doors. Those bank failures cost the public $140 billion dollars in deposits, or well over a trillion dollars in contemporary purchasing power. These failures greatly deepened the downturn as consumers were frequently left penniless.

One thing Alan Greenspan was determined to do was prevent a serial collapse of the banking system on his watch. He opened the spigot and flooded the economy with money and credit. He wasn’t the only central banker to do so; the supply of money shot up worldwide. With this mega-injection of liquidity, the global economy became distorted and unstable.

This instability now threatens the raison-d’etre for central banking and the bankers are apparently trying to rein in the situation. The president of the European Central Bank has announced, "Everybody knows that we are not facilitating in any way those who behaved improperly,"** In keeping with this, the Bank of England is reluctant to be seen as bailing out improvident lenders***:

"The Sunday Times said Lloyds TSB (LLOY.L) had held talks to mount a rescue of its rival, but a deal was ultimately blocked by the BoE and Financial Services Authority… An industry source said a bidder was interested in a takeover but wanted the BoE to provide funding on a generous basis to help the deal go through, but that was not accepted as it would have been seen as an effective subsidy."

Unfortunately, the time for prudence has passed.
When people are already standing out on the street to recover their savings, either they must be made whole, or the fear will spread. 8o

Alan Greenspan bereitet sich schon vor... :D

The former Fed chair said he urged Bush to veto a string of "out-of-control" spending bills, but to no avail. He was told the president wanted to avoid antagonizing Republican political leadership.

"To my mind, Bush's collaborate-don't-confront approach was a major mistake -- it cost the nation a check-and-balance mechanism essential to fiscal discipline," Greenspan said.

But Greenspan said Republican lawmakers sowed the seeds of their political defeat in 2006 by abandoning fiscal prudence.

"They swapped principle for power. They ended up with neither. They deserved to lose," he added.....

Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Former Federal Reserve Chairman
Alan Greenspan criticized President George W. Bush for
pursuing an economic agenda driven by politics rather
than sound policy, with little concern for future
    consequences.

    @Simpson

war wohl nichts mit der grossen Demo und Nukethreat am 14.September in USA.
Dafuer verbreitet nun Herr Schaeuble Angst:

Berlin - The risk of a terrorist attack in Germany, possibly even a nuclear strike, is high despite last week's arrest of suspected Islamist militants, Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told a newspaper on Saturday.
"The terrorist threat has not diminished," Schaeuble told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, according to extracts published in advance

Don’t be surprised if this week’s terror alert is raised from orange to red.
That’s one of the potential themes with the Sun entering a T-square with the Mars-Pluto opposition, with Pluto still conjunct the Galactic Center. On Monday, the first of this aspect formation unfolds with the Sun in waxing square to Mars. This is a Level One (strongest) signature, with a 76% correlation to primary or greater cycle culminations within an orb of 13 trading days. However, in the study of Mundane Astrology, this has themes related to aggression and military combat. But what makes this particular instance more dangerous is that on September 19 and 21 respectively, both the Sun and Mars enter into a waning square to Pluto and then opposition to Pluto, respectively. And Pluto with these two planets can produce a very explosive situation that endangers the lives of many people. It’s possible that this danger could come in the form of natural calamities.

Remember the brutal first hour of trading on August 16th? That was the fateful day when a mini-panic ripped through gold stocks like a tornado. The HUI plunged 10% in the first hour of trading and some high-potential smaller gold stocks plummeted over 25%! For leveraged PM-stock speculators, it felt like Armageddon. :(

...The bottom line is the HUI is now technically in position to launch its next massive upleg, its fourth surge to new high levels scarcely yet imagined in this bull. If you run the HUI upleg cycle average gains off of the recent August interim lows, it yields incredible HUI targets ranging from 580 to 700! And such uplegs have only taken about 6 to 12 months to unfold in this bull, so if historic precedent proves prophetic we won’t have to wait long for legendary gains.

Dear Friend of GATA and Gold:

In his latest essay for Investor's Digest of Canada, Sprott Asset Management's chief investment strategist, John Embry, muses on the idiocy of some gold-market commentary amid the increasingly desperate central bank interventions in the market. Embry's essay is headlined "Lending Crisis Sets U.S. Dollar on Fatal Course" and you can find it at the Sprott site here:

    Someone Finally Said It

    (And it's long over-due.)

    Proud To Be White

    Someone finally said it

How many are actually paying attention to this?

    There are African Americans,

    Mexican Americans,

    Asian Americans,

    Arab Americans,

    Native Americans, etc.

...And then there are just -

    Americans.

You pass me on the street

    and sneer in my direction.

    You Call me "White boy,"

    "Cracker," "Honkey,"

    "Whitey," "Caveman,"

    ... And that's OK.

But when I call you Nigger,

    Kike, Towel head,

    Sand-nigger, Camel Jockey,

    Beaner, Gook, or Chink

... You call me a racist.

You say that whites commit a lot

    of violence against you,

so why are the ghettos the most

    dangerous places to live?

You have the United Negro College Fund.

You have Martin Luther King Day.

    You have Black History Month.

    You have Cesar Chavez Day.

    You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi.

    You Have Yom Hashoah.

    You have the NAACP.

    And you have BET.

    If we had WET

    (White Entertainment Television)

    ... We'd be racists.

If we had a White Pride Day

... You would call us racists.

If we had White History Month

    ... We'd be racists.

If we had any organization for only whites

    to "advance" OUR lives

    ... We'd be racists.

We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce,

    a Black Chamber of Commerce,

and then we just have the plain

    Chamber of Commerce.

    Wonder who pays for that?

If we had a college fund that only gave

    white students scholarships

... You know we'd be racists.

    There are over 60 openly-proclaimed

Black-only Colleges in the US ,

yet if there were "White-only Colleges"

... THAT would be a racist college.

    In the Million Man March,

    you believed that you were

marching for your race and rights.

If we marched for our race and rights,

... You would call us racists.

You are proud to be black,

    brown, yellow and orange,

and you're not afraid to announce it.

But when we announce our white pride

    ... You call us racists.

    You rob us,

    carjack us,

    and shoot at us.

But, when a white police officer

    shoots a black gang member

or beats up a black drug-dealer

who is running from the LAW and

posing a threat to ALL of society

... You call him a racist.

    I am proud.

... But, you call me a racist.

    Why is it that only

    whites

    can be racists?
