South Africa: Family of 6 wiped out with gun

Johannesburg - A family of six was found on Tuesday, shot dead in a home in Vanderbijlpark in the Vaal Triangle, said police.
Inspector Trudie Wilken said: "At 10:00, the bodies of the six were discovered."

Four boys, aged between eight and 15, their mother, in her 40s, and their grandmother, in her 70s, were found with gunshot wounds to the head.

"The mother and the two little ones were lying on a bed in the main bedroom.

"The other boy was found in the kitchen. Another one had tried to hide in a cupboard in the passage. The grandmother was found on her bed," said Wilken.

A strange smell

According to the police's initial investigation, the six were killed on Monday morning.

Police were called when someone tried to gain access to the house, and also noticed a strange smell.

No arrests had been made yet.

Husband forced to watch rape

Hazyview - A man was forced to watch two intruders rape his wife on Tuesday. They then shot him in the face, killing him.
Captain Leonard Hlathi of Mpumalanga police said the attack took place in Calcutta near Hazyview.

He said the men broke into the couple's house just after midnight.

"They forced open the security gate and held the couple up. Both had firearms, and the man was forced to watch while they took turns raping his wife.

"When they were done, they shot him in the face. He died instantly. They then robbed the woman of two cellphones and a bank card. The men fled on foot," said Hlathi.

Inflation jumps to 5.3%

Johannesburg - South Africa's targeted CPIX inflation rate rose by 5.3% in the year to January, slightly above forecasts - after increasing by 5.0% in December, official data showed on Wednesday.

Figures from Statistics South Africa also indicated that the all-items consumer price index (CPI) increased by an annual rate of 6.0% in January compared with December's 5.8%.

On a monthly basis, CPIX rose by 1.0% while headline CPI rose by 0.9%.

A Reuters poll had predicted that CPIX would rise by 5.2% year-on-year and 0.9% month-on-month while CPI was seen at 6.0% year-on-year and 0.9% month-on-month.

300 case dockets destroyed

Hazyview - About 300 police case dockets went up in flames on Tuesday.
Police suspect the detectives' offices at the Masoyi periodical court near Hazyview, in Mpumalanga, was set alight on purpose and have opened an arson case.

"We are talking about upwards of 300 dockets that were destroyed here. Most of them are for murder and armed robbery and one of them is that of our suspect," said Masoyi police spokesperson Inspector Jiyela Sibiya on Wednesday.

He said that although the dockets were burnt, there were back-up copies of all them.

The fire was detected in the morning when police arrived for the day shift.

When they opened the doors to the building, the fire flared up.

It took about an hour before the fire was contained. But by then, most of the dockets had been destroyed.

Burglars kill man with own gun

Durban - A 62-year old man was shot dead with his own gun in a struggle with burglars who broke into his Ladysmith home on Wednesday, police said.

Captain Charmaine Struwig said Bernard De Wet was woken by a noise in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Taking his gun, he came across two burglars in another part of the house.

A struggle ensued in which De Wet shot one of the men in the thigh.

However, the other burglar disarmed him and shot De Wet in the chest.

The robbers fled after assaulting De Wet's wife.

On the scene within minutes, the police's dog unit tracked the two men through a nearby veld to a hill where they were arrested and De Wet's firearm recovered. The wounded robber was taken to hospital.

De Wet's wife was treated on the scene for a cut to the head and shock.

Struwig said the robbers faced charges of murder, burglary, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

R11bn more to fight crime

Cape Town - Resources going to the South African Police Service will rise by "a further 34%" from R33bn in 2006/07 to R44bn in 2009/10, Trevor Manuel reported in his Budget speech on Wednesday.

With crime being a focus of government interactions with big business in recent weeks - following First National Bank's pulling of a multi-million rand multi-media anti-crime campaign - Manuel emphasised that "our government recognises the seriousness of our crime situation and will continue to provide leadership in the fight against crime."

The Financial Intelligence Centre, the Financial Services Board and the South African Revenue Service have been instructed by Finance Minister Trevor Manuel to work "collaboratively" with the South African Police Service and prosecutors in dealing with financial crime and its proceeds.

Manuel did not mention the Fidentia saga - where public funds are reported missing from the transport and education sectoral training authority.

Greed driving crime

But he took pains to report in his Budget speech on Wednesday that government "must ensure that neither organised crime nor abuse of stewardship obligations should be allowed to violate our hard-earned democracy and the integrity of our country."

The finance minister noted that "we cannot escape the fact that greed plays a role in driving crime," noting the destructive effects of the "relentless pursuit of individual self-enrichment at the expense of the broader development and progress of society."

In an apparent reference to the Fidentia funding saga, Manuel said: "We need to insist that honesty and integrity are core values of our economic and financial institutions.

"We continue to see instances of flagrant abuse of this principle, often involving hundreds of millions of rand."

"I want to make it clear that we will not tolerate a situation where individuals pillage and plunder millions from the companies they run or from ordinary South Africans who are poor and humble people whose entire life savings get destroyed in the process.

"We continue to see extraordinary methods to evade tax and legal obligations relating to anti-money laundering legislation," said Manuel.

'Communites must help'

But, the finance minister said, "effective crime fighting depends on partnerships between our law enforcement agencies and communities".

"Through community police forums, all citizens have the opportunity to contribute towards making their communities safer. In this way, each person can help in the construction of a society where human life has equal worth."

The budget for the Department of Justice had increased by 41% in the past three years and would rise by 52% over the next three years, he also reported.

Johannesburg - A journalist from the international television news service, CNN, and his wife were robbed at gunpoint outside the network's offices in Auckland Park in Johannesburg early on Saturday, said CNN.

CNN spokesperson Susanna Flood said from London that CNN Africa correspondent Jeff Koinange and his wife were robbed by four armed young men who took personal items and television equipment from them.

Neither was physically harmed.

"CNN's first concern is for the safety of Jeff and his wife and additional security measures have been put in place," said Flood.

She said the incident was being investigated by police and CNN.

Koinange was not working on an assignment when the robbery took place.

Judge dodges media at court

Johannesburg:

There was confusion in the Hillbrow magistrate's court on Tuesday where Pretoria Judge Nkola Motata was expected to appear on a drunken driving charge.

Reporters who inquired about the judge's appearance were sent from "pillar to post".

Motata was expected to appear in court one, but had still not appeared after 10:00 and his case was not on the roll.

A police officer told reporters that Motata had already appeared in court four, while other police officers said he appeared in the magistrate's chambers and left.

Senior prosecutor Nathi Mncube, however, insisted that Motata had not appeared yet.

"All first appearances take place in court one," Mncube said.

Mncube who had earlier told reporters that Motata's case docket had not arrived, refused to tell reporters if it had arrived after 10:00.

"I cannot answer that," he said.

Motata arrived at the court in his blue Jaguar after 09:00.

A security guard tried in vain to prevent photographers from taking pictures of Motata and his wife.

Unconfirmed rumours were that Motata left via the basement, escaping photographers.

More affirmative action coming

Johannesburg - Affirmative action policies will never be ruled out in South Africa, the labour minister said on Saturday.

"Contrary to parliamentary calls by opposition Democratic Alliance, affirmative action and current employment equity legislation would never be repealed but would be intensified instead," Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana said.

He was speaking at the annual Ndebele King Silamba commemoration in Pretoria on Saturday.

The DA MP Mark Lowe called for the scrapping of affirmative action during a debate on job creation and globalisation in parliament this week.

Lowe cited that there was there was a lack of qualified artisans in the country because of the policy.

He said Mdladlana should announce a complete rethink of legislation regarding employment equity.

The United Party of SA, the Freedom Front Plus and the Inkatha Freedom Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi also supported the call to scrap the law.

Laws not meant to discriminate

Mdladlane said affirmative action laws were not meant to discriminate against any race group but were aimed at redressing the imbalances of the past.

"Liberation should be accompanied by programmes to improve the quality of life of the poor by totally eradicating the apartheid legacy and empower people with skills for better opportunities."

He said it was incorrect for anyone to suggest that "we only affirm those who voted us into power".

South Africa is the only country that affirms the majority of people, he added.

Cape Town - The line in the sand between the African National Congress deputy president and President Thabo Mbeki came into sharp relief this weekend with Jacob Zuma's statement that crime "is not a perception".

While on a visit to the family of murdered farmer Willie Slabbert, 57, of Meyerton, south of Johannesburg, Zuma said crime was not a perception for the Slabbert family, but a reality.

"They have been affected by crime three times in quick succession.

"No one should live in fear in this country," he said after the visit.

"We should not debate if crime is, or is not, getting worse. We should be working at it with all urgency.

"The ANC takes crime, and especially farm murders, very seriously, " said Zuma.

On Tuesday, Slabbert was battered to death with a hammer and stabbed with a long chisel and a knife at his house, at Zomerlust farm wedding venue, near Vereeniging.

On Wednesday, his niece, Daleen Kruger,53, died of a heart attack after she heard of his death.

In 1999, family member Theuns de Lange was crippled during a hijacking.

Zuma has HIV test

Zuma's statements contrast sharply with those of Mbeki in January when he said on TV that it was "a perception" that crime was out of control.

Mbeki was sharply criticised because his televised statement contrasted with his call a week earlier at Witbank, for national consensus on the "crime plague" in the country.

In what is regarded as another jab at the head of state, Zuma had his HIV-status tested on Friday.

The Sunday Independent reported on Sunday that Zuma had had his status tested at his home town, Inkandla, in KwaZulu-Natal and encouraged others to follow his example.

The apparent attempt to woo Afrikaners continued on Sunday.

His spokesperson Ranjeni Munusamy said that Zuma's feeling was that Afrikaners should once again become part of the nation-building experiment in South Africa.

More-frequent meetings urged

"They should be part of it," she quoted Zuma as saying.

This followed Zuma's statement on Saturday at Meyerton that Afrikaners should talk to the government more frequently on matters of language, culture and security.

"This land is for Afrikaners and everyone living in it."

Munusamy said acknowledging the various cultural groups was of utmost importance to Zuma.

"Zuma's meeting last week with (activist and singer) Steve (Hofmeyr) and his visit to the family of the murder victim was merely a continuation of his dialogue with Afrikaners.

"During his time as deputy president, he met regularly with Afrikaners. They felt he understood them," she said on Sunday.

Independent political analyst Aubrey Matshiqi said the visits and sentiments contrasted sharply with those of Mbeki.

'Reaching out' is welcomed

"Zuma is seeking to dispel the argument that crime is a problem that affects certain groups - read whites - by validating their fears as something that is shared by all," said Matshiqi.

Meanwhile, the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) welcomed Zuma's statement during his visit to the Slabbert family.

"His attempt to reach out to Afrikaners is welcomed at a time of greater tension and polarisation," said FF+ party leader Dr Pieter Mulder.

Entführte und missbrauchte Mädchen aus Erdloch befreit

Die Festnahme eines Serien-Triebtäters hat in Südafrika die Leidenszeit zweier in einem Erdloch gefangen gehaltener Mädchen beendet. Eines der Kinder ist erst vier Jahre alt, das andere Mädchen wurde seit mehr als einem Jahr vermisst.

Johannesburg - Wie südafrikanische Zeitungen berichten, wirkten die beiden Kinder im Alter von vier und 14 Jahren völlig verstört, als die Polizei sie befreite. Die 14-Jährige, die schon im Dezember 2005 von einer Farm in der Gegend verschwunden war, wurde nach Angaben ihrer Mutter nackt in dem Erdloch entdeckt.

Sie war bleich und voller Panik, als sie das Tageslicht erblickte. Ihr Entführer, der sie auch sexuell missbraucht haben soll, hatte sie lediglich mit Zuckerwasser und Süßigkeiten ernährt. Waschen durfte sie sich nicht.

Unklar blieb, wie lange die Vierjährige in dem Loch ausharren musste. Der festgenommene 31-Jährige hatte zunächst behauptet, Vater des kleinen Mädchens zu sein. Er befand sich seit drei Jahren auf der Flucht und wurde wegen mindestens 21 Straftaten gesucht.

Ein Einbruch bei Bekannten wurde ihm schließlich zum Verhängnis. Er wurde von den Bewohnern der Hütte überrascht und dann betrunken und schläfrig gemacht. Als die Polizei eintraf, war er bereits von Angehörigen der Familie malträtiert worden.

Foreign firms may get 2010 deals

Johannesburg - South Africa on Wednesday invited foreign companies to bid for the construction of 2010 World Cup facilities, citing a skills shortage at home and a lack of competition driving up prices.

"Given the problem of skills shortages in the country, we would like more foreign companies to come and bid for 2010 projects," Malcolm Simpson, a senior official in the finance department told a parliamentary committee on finance.

"Bringing in foreign companies will create competition among contractors," Simpson said....die kennen die Neger.

With only six major construction companies in the country, the scope for towns and cities to negotiate the cost of new facilities was limited, he said, inviting Chinese and other foreign bidders to tender for contracts.

The beginning of construction of five new stadia for the tournament, scheduled to begin in January, was delayed by protracted price negotiations.

On Wednesday, after weeks of scrambling to make up a R180m shortfall in financing for its planned new R1.9bn stadium, Cape Town Mayor Helen Zille announced a solution had been found.

Banking group Investec has offered to guarantee the amount of the shortfall against a post-2010 operating lease on the stadium, paving the way for construction work to begin soon.

midas, das war arschknapp,hatte eine coloured Richterin und Staatsanwalt im richtigen Saal.
Es ging eigentlich schnell, man bestimmte das Urteil ausserhalb im Buero des Staatsanwalt vor der Verhandlung.
Die kennen sich alle und meistens braucht der Richter nur 2 min um zu entscheiden, dort gehts ab wie am Fliessband.
Dreimal vor Gericht kam ich nicht mal zu einem Wort.
Im Juli suche ich mir eine Wohnung in Kaernten wahrscheinlich und lebe dann das halbe Jahr ab Ende des Jahres bis ich ganz umziehe und die Kinder auch weg sind aus dem Irrenhaus RSA.
Auch mein Anwalt sagte, es ist Zeit wir Weissen ruecken ab, wer es kann.
Ab naechstes Jahr werden die meisten Waffen entzogen, wenn man Glueck hat und deftige Gruende darf man nach etlicher Prozedur noch eine Waffe behalten aber bestimmt nicht mehr schiessen wie in meinen Fall bei vier Einbrecher die Mordabsichten hatte.
Irgendwann gibt es Unruhen mit den Weissen die nur Steinen schmeissen koennen und die Neger schiessen auf sie zur Abwechslung.
Ich und die anderen Weissen haben die falsche Hautfarbe, zum Glueck gab es noch eine Gerechtigkeit und guten Anwalt.
