  • Dead N1 crash victims robbed

    2007-9-19 23:06

Colesberg - For 10 years, the Eastern Cape's wheelchair basketball team couldn't afford to take part in the national championships.

On Tuesday night, while on their way to fulfil their dream, fate struck a cruel blow when three of the players were killed in an accident while they were en route to the championship in Bloemfontein.

Deonette Olivier, 28, of Port Elizabeth and Sinlindile Vuliwe of East London died in the crash, while Dirk Brand, 47, also of Port Elizabeth, died on the way to hospital.

The team had left Port Elizabeth on Tuesday morning. By 15:55 they were about 1km from Colesberg.

Close to the spot where the N9 from the Eastern Cape merges with the N1 between Cape Town and Johannesburg, their minibus collided with a truck heading in the direction of Cape Town.

    Stopped at intersection

Apparently the team's driver Johan Scholtz stopped at the stop-sign. When he saw no vehicles approaching, he pulled off.

Shortly afterwards a truck smashed into the side of the minibus.

Scholtz was still in shock on Wednesday. He described the intersection where the routes merge as a real "death trap".

The impact sent some of the passengers, including Olivier, flying through the windows. One of the truck's trailers apparently pulverised her.

Emergency workers rushed the six other passengers to the hospital at Colesberg.

Iwan Olivier, Deonette's seven-year-old son, was transferred to the ICU of Rosepark Hospital in Bloemfontein with bleeding on the brain and lung problems.

Ayanda Thembiso of East London was transferred to Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein while Thulani Spoyo and Fundisile Sochan were taken to a hospital in Kimberley.

Scholtz and Siseko Mfanana suffered light injuries and were discharged on Wednesday.

    Bystanders robbed crash victims

While emergency workers were tending to the injured, bystanders apparently robbed them blind. Cellphones and wallets vanished into thin air. 8o

Olivier's purse, with all the funds for the trip, was found empty about 100m from the accident site.

Both the Kombi and the wheelchairs that were being transported on top of the trailer were written off.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

  • Choir robbers hit a low note

    2007-9-19 23:05

Johannesburg - The sweet strains of devotional music were rudely interrupted by five robbers, who robbed the choir members of an East Rand church on Tuesday night.

Captain Fenzangakhana Mohale said five men with small firearms struck at the Lillianton congregation of the New Apostolic Church in Boksburg.

Bishop Edward Kieswetter said the men entered the church vestry at about 20:00 and stopped the choir practice.

"The men were forced to lie down and were frisked. The women were not searched, but their jewellery was looted. Various purses and cellphones were stolen."

Kieswetter said the choirmaster Paul Keller and a lay preacher Johan Oelofse, were pistol-whipped on their heads.

A choir member who did not want to be named, said the men marched down the aisle cocking their guns in single file.

She said the choirmaster, who saw the men before the rest did, suddenly dropped his hands and asked everyone just to remain calm.

"We were terribly traumatised", the choir member said.

But that doesn't mean choir members are now too afraid to sing together.

"Nobody's going to stop the Lord's work. The police and the neighbourhood watch are going to patrol during choir practice and we'll continue as usual," she said.

  • Robbers hit Kruger Park

    2007-9-20 09:03

Skukuza - Burglars have not only made off with a safe containing R300 000, they've also nabbed very expensive zebra skins and lots of expensive Scotch whisky from Skukuza.

Apparently about seven burglars entered the Kruger National Park on Monday, the first day of Sanpark's national campaign to allow all South Africans free entry to the country's game reserves.

They're thought to have hidden at the rest camp that night, before breaking into the shop at about 02:00 on Tuesday morning.

Oubaas Coetzer, spokesperson for the police at Skukuza, said the burglars had cut a hole in the shop's thatched roof.

    Shootout with police

They climbed along the beams onto fridges, where they ripped out the wiring of the alarm system and closed-circuit cameras.

Several zebra skins, each priced at about R12 000, were stolen.

Coetzer said clothing, expensive leather shoes and only the top liquor brand names were plundered.

The thieves broke out the safe and took it along. The entire weekend's takings were in the safe, apparently to be banked on Tuesday.

The thieves broke open the back door and loaded their loot into three vehicles.

At the camp gate they overpowered two guards, tied them up and locked them in the guardhouse.

The thieves then drove on to Kruger gate where they also overpowered the guards, and tied them up.

At the gate the police found a computer and a ladder that were apparently in one of the vehicles.

Coetzer said one of the vehicles had had an accident at the gate.

"It would appear that some of the items fell off the vehicle in the accident," said Coetzer.

Meanwhile the guards at Skukuza had freed themselves and contacted the police.

While en route from Mkuhlu police station, the police came across one of the suspect vehicles about 20km from Kruger Gate.

A gunfight broke out between the police and the suspected thieves.

The suspects stopped next to the road and fled on foot.

The police also followed a trail of oil drips from the vehicle that had the accident at the gate, to the nearby Trust Land.

The vehicle was found later. None of the loot from the burglary was found in either of the two vehicles.

Police think that one of the thieves was injured during the gun battle with the police, because fresh blood was found in the vehicle.

Game Reserve spokesperson Raymond Travers said neither staff nor tourists were injured during the plundering.

Meanwhile the reserve has stepped up security measures in the rest camps.

Exactly two years ago armed robbers hit the same shop.

  • 'I am going to kill a white man

    '2007-9-20 10:31

    Port Elizabeth

    "I strangled him."
    "We strangled him."

    "Nigerians strangled him."

"My co-accused and a friend strangled him."

These were four versions of events that Natasha Dziwonu, 31, one the alleged killers of businessman Hein Nel, 26, had offered since her arrest.

Dziwonu and Jongisizwe Mamase, 28, are accused of murder and robbery following Nel's death in October last year.

Nel collected rent from Dziwonu, who rented his flat in Central, on October 6.

    She confessed initially

"His body was found under a single bed in Dziwonu's bedroom two days later.

The Port Elizabeth high court heard on Wednesday that Dziwonu had told inspector Jackie Grobler on the day of her arrest that she had strangled Nel.

She later told Grobler she and her friends had strangled him.

However, in a warning statement and a statement made in front of a magistrate, she indicated that two Nigerians had killed Nel.

According to these documents, she heard Nel and two Nigerians arguing in front of her door on the day of Nel's murder. She opened the door.

The two men, who had a gun, allegedly dragged Nel into her flat, tied his hands and feet with shoelaces and robbed him.

They then covered him with a duvet, kicked him, strangled him with shoelaces and hid his body under the single bed.

On Wednesday, she gave yet another version.

For the first time she said Mamase and his "Xhosa-speaking friend" robbed and killed Nel.

According to Dziwonu, Mamase and the friend were at her flat when Nel arrived. She allegedly handed the rent money to Nel, but before he could leave, Mamase and his friend grabbed him and threatened him with a knife.

They tied him with shoelaces and robbed him.

They then strangled him with a rope with which she had tied back the curtains, and hid his body.

Mamase denied this testimony and said he only took part in the robbery, but left while Nel was still alive.

Mamase's legal representative, James Reily, wanted to know from Dziwonu why she had changed her testimony.

She said it was the truth, except for the part about the Nigerians.

Phumeza Ntomi, one of Dziwonu's friends, testified on Wednesday that Dziwono had asked her on October 3 if she knew someone who could drive a car and had a gun.

Dziwonu allegedly told Ntomi she was going to grab a white man, tie him up and kill him two days later.

    590 000 court cases 'drop away' 8o

    2007-5-29 19:37

    Cape Town

More than half of the million cases that made it last year on to the rolls of South Africa's lower courts were withdrawn or struck off, said the Democratic Alliance on Tuesday.

Speaking during debate on the justice department budget vote in the National Assembly, DA justice spokesperson Sheila Camerer told MPs that drastic action also was needed to reduce growing case backlogs.

"Negative trends in South Africa's 2 000-odd court rooms include steadily growing outstanding court rolls - about 210 000 cases in the lower courts, as well as increasing backlogs.

"(This includes) nearly 37 000 cases in the lower courts - that's cases more than 12 months old - and 20 000 cases in the regional courts, where most serious violent crime is dealt with," she said.

    Fall by the wayside

Court sitting hours and case finalisation rates had dropped for three years in a row, and, generally, case cycle times had increased, in spite of the appointment of 260 court managers.

"Conviction rates and the rate of settlement of cases by plea bargaining are both down, according to the National Prosecuting Authority, and appeals often take five years to finalise - far too long.

"Perhaps the most worrying aspect of this poor performance is the large and increasing number of cases that make it to court, but then fall by the wayside.

"Last year, about 590 000 of the million-odd cases enrolled in the lower courts, fell by the wayside because of withdrawals: a quarter of a million cases being struck off the roll; nearly 100 000 cases a non-appearance of the accused; and, about 150 000 cases where warrants of arrest were issued."

The bottom line was "the courts are not well run", she said.

    'No plan in place'

Among the reasons for such "dismal performance" was the large number of vacant posts in the department, as well as the "mismanagement" of the salaries of legal professionals within the department.

"The huge increases given to magistrates last year has led to large numbers of prosecutors (the usual source of magistrates), deserting for the Bench because of the disparity."

The department had identified the need to do something about this, but seemed to have no plan in place, she said.

  • Manuel: Metals boom won't last

    2007-9-21 12:50

Johannesburg - Commodity-rich African countries should act wisely in order to benefit from the prevailing global boom for the sector, because it will not last, South African Finance Minister Trevor Manuel has warned.
Manuel said in a speech at the University of Namibia late on Thursday that the current upswing in commodity prices would "stay in the short-to-medium term".

"The current commodity super-cycle and boom has lasted for some seven years, and we cannot predict when the trend will be reversed," he said in the speech, posted on the South Africa Treasury website.

Demand from growing economies such as China and India has pushed up prices for commodities like gold, platinum and oil, which Africa is rich in.

Manuel said African countries had not fully taken advantage of commodity booms in the past, and warned:

"To assume that current prices and the current boom phase reflects a permanent shift, rather than a temporary opportunity, would be a naive and risky approach.

"If our analysis is correct, then the slump will come and it will bring with it a significant decline in commodity prices.
This could spell disaster for many developing countries," Manuel added.

Millions of people in mineral-rich African countries still live in poverty, with critics pointing partly to national governments' mismanagement.

"The suggestion that commodity price upswings might be a curse and not a blessing is an uncomfortable reminder of our responsibility, now, to act wisely and prudently in the interest of future growth," Manuel said.

Oil-rich African countries such as Angola and Nigeria have experienced unprecedented economic growth from the windfalls of international oil prices, which have risen to record highs.

  • Cops monitor 2010 strikers :D

    2007-9-20 11:52J

Police maintained a visible presence at the Green Point Stadium on Thursday where about 200 striking construction workers had gathered, Cape Town police said.

"We are maintaining a visible presence to prevent the kind of violence we had yesterday.
So far there has been no violence today, although about 200 strikers have gathered at the stadium," Senior Superintendent Billy Jones said.

On Wednesday, a policeman was injured in a clash with striking building workers at the stadium.

The workers are striking over travel allowances.

The site was presently closed, said Pieter Cronje, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town's 2010 project team.

"We expect work to begin again on Tuesday, after the public holiday," he said.

The City of Cape Town saw the issue as a labour matter between the contractor for the stadium and the workforce.

"We won't be intervening," Cronje said.

The building of the stadium was on track, but time was precious.

"The contractor and the strikers are meeting today and we're hopeful that if construction begins again on Tuesday that lost time will be made up," Cronje said.

Green Point soccer stadium will be used during the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup. ;(

Johannesburg - Former president Nelson Mandela is alive and well after comments on Iraq by US President George W Bush appear to have been misunderstood, the Nelson Mandela Foundation said on Friday.

"It appears that his statement has been misunderstood and we wish to assure everyone that Mr Mandela is alive and well and enjoying some rest and relaxation at his home in Johannesburg," said Achmat Dangor, chief executive of the foundation.

On Thursday Bush was quoted by Agence France Presse as saying: "I heard somebody say, 'Now where's Mandela?' Well, Mandela is dead. Because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas." :D

The comments came during a media briefing.

Dangor, said, "We know that his statement was made in the context of the difficulty in finding Iraqis capable of resolving the conflict in their country."

  • Another scandal hits ANC funder

    2007-9-23 13:01

Johannesburg - A businessman who diverted funds to the ANC has been implicated in the disappearance of millions of rand meant for a school feeding scheme, the Sunday Times reported on Sunday.

"Controversial ANC funder Sandi Majali has been fingered in a forensic audit into the disappearance of more than R100-million intended for starving children in the Eastern Cape," the report said.

According to the audit, companies under Majali's control had been involved in the collapse of the R230m school feeding scheme.

The Scorpions were now investigating irregularities uncovered during the audit, according to the Sunday Times.

Majali's Imvume group was at the centre of the Oilgate scandal and he was also implicated in the Iraq oil-for-food scandal, the newspaper said.

The school feeding scheme, which was meant to cater for a million children, collapsed barely six months after it was started in June last year when it emerged that food was not getting to children at about 5 000 schools in the province.

Majali was in charge of four out of six community co-operatives that were awarded tenders to distribute supplies to 104 smaller co-operatives that would then prepare the meals and get the food to the children, the report said.

Forensic auditors Ngubane and Co, who were commissioned by Eastern Cape Premier Nosimo Balindlela, found that Majali's co-operatives were irregularly awarded tenders; Majali's co-operatives were irregularly paid at least R16m over four months; and Majali's co-operatives were overpaid by R9m, the Sunday Times said.

By the time the scheme crashed, the department had paid out R100m.

It is not clear where the rest of the R100m went, the report said.

Two top education department officials responsible for the failed scheme have been suspended. The scheme's acting chief director, Eldred Fray, and a director, Mthobile Gaca, were suspended along with others in less senior positions.

The feeding scheme was the brainchild of former Eastern Cape Education MEC Mkangeli Matomela, who resigned after it collapsed, the newspaper said.

  • Farm attacks cost agri R1bn/yr

    2007-9-23 14:20

Cape Town - Crime in the agricultural sector does not only cause human suffering, but also costs the sector more than R1bn a year.

In shock revelations to the Human Rights Commission the past week, Agri SA revealed that farm attacks increased by 25% to 794 in the year to end-June.

Almost 90% of the attacks were burglaries.

Agri SA was delivering a report to the HRC on the progress with residential rights, safety and security and labour relations in the agricultural sector.

The report refers to Statistics South Africa's findings in its 2002 agricultural census, showing that theft of cattle amounted to a R483m loss for the sector, while the plundering of equipment and implements amounted to R204m, damage to buildings and vehicles amounted to R99m and theft of products cost the sector another R443m.

Referring to the causes for the attacks, Agri SA said there is great concern over the negative picture painted by some non-government organisations and officials.

"We believe that this contributed to motivate people to attack farmers and their families," according to the report.

On residential security, Agri SA said it recognised the constitutional rights of farm workers, but said there are circumstances where it doesn't make sense to harbour workers any longer on farms.

Not only did worker numbers decline, but there was also a significant decline in the number of commercial farmers.

The organisation, however, question the alleged huge numbers of dispossessed people often mentioned. Agri SA never received any evidence of this.

Agri SA suggested a review of the laws governing dismissals, because it reckoned that the problem was with the enforcement of the laws.

The organisation also suggested that a body similar to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) be created to deal with depositions.

On labour relations, Agri SA said in this year alone, the Department of Labour released three press statements, where officials - after inspections - expressed their satisfaction with labour relations on farms.

  • One million crimes 'unsolvable'

    2007-9-23 16:05

Johannesburg - Of the more than two million crime incidents reported to the police last year, half have been declared unsolvable. 8o

That's according to a confidential government report presented at the last meeting of the Big Business Working Group with President Thabo Mbeki.

The report says the problem can be attributed in part to the fact that the SAPS has only 22 500 police detectives to solve these crimes.

As a result of the critical detective shortage, the report says, about one million cases do not get investigated each year.
They are declared "undetected", meaning no suspects were identified and police had reached a dead end.

Of the remaining one million cases, only 400 000 go to trial.

    Criminal justice system too rigid

The main architects of the report are Deputy Justice Minister Johnny de Lange and Laurie Dippenaar, former group chief executive of FirstRand.

The report paints a disturbing picture of how police, prosecutors, courts and correctional services are ill-prepared to put criminals where they belong - behind bars.

It says the criminal justice system is too rigid and needs an overhaul.

Other recommendations include increasing the size of the detective service to between 25%-33% of the police workforce and improving salaries.

A senior police officer was sceptical about the viability of the plan.

He said solutions by people who were not part of the criminal justice system had their limitations.

    Mbeki appeals to rich nations

    2007-9-26 19:44

Johannesburg - Massive resource transfers to poor countries from rich countries were needed if the world wants to attain its Millennium Developmental Goals, President Thabo Mbeki said late on Tuesday.

Mbeki told the 62nd session of the United Nations' General Assembly in New York there was an urgent need for resource transfers to poor countries - through development assistance, investment, trade, technology, and human resources..... $$$$$$$$$$$$ :D

"As we all accept, central to the attainment of MDGs (Millennium Developmental Goals) globally, is the critical matter of resource transfers from the rich countries of the North to poor countries of the South," Mbeki said in a speech released by his office on Wednesday.

"Many developing countries, especially those from my own continent, Africa, do not have the material base from which to address and attain the MDGs on their own."

    'Partner with Africa'

Mbeki, who said he believed South Africa would attain its MDGs, urged the richer countries to enter into partnerships with African countries using the African Union's programme of Nepad.

He said this would strengthen the measures the continent already took with limited resources, through international community-guided programmes of the UN which adopted Nepad.

Referring to the resource transfers in the aftermath of the World War II which helped Western Europe recover, Mbeki asked the question why there was an absence of the same resolve to assist poor nations today.

He said a similar intervention helped a number of Asian countries onto their own development trajectory.

The president also said the UN had not yet transformed itself or "designed the necessary institutions of governance consistent with the noble ideals that drive modern democratic societies".

The reason for this was that the world was defined by the dominant and the dominated, said Mbeki.

"The dominant have also become the decision makers in the important global forums, including at this seat of global governance.

"Accordingly, the skewed distribution of power in the world - political, economic, military, technological and social - replicates itself in multilateral institutions, much to the disadvantage of the majority of the poor people of the world."

'UN 'guided by the rich' :D

Mbeki said although the UN correctly identified problems and made solutions that would make the world a better place for all, it was guided by the interests of the rich.

"Naturally, the dominant and the powerful very often respond positively to agreed programmes if these would advance their own narrow interests," Mbeki said in his prepared speech.

Until ideals of freedom, justice and equality characterised the UN, rich nations would forever dictate to the "dominated".

"The interests of the dominated, which are those of the majority of humanity, would be deferred in perpetuity."

Mbeki urged the world's nations to let actions speak louder than words and to stop making "declaration after declaration against poverty and underdevelopment" without meaning it. :D

Schickt das Moos nach Afrika ! ....they need it :D
