Manila Standard Today reported that a 13 member special team will be formed to look into issues surrounding a mining project in Mindoro.

Mr Eleazar Quinto acting environment secretary said that Mindoro residents, local officials and clergymen arrived at this decision during a consultation meeting held recently at the Bishop's Palace in the capital town of Calapan.

The team's findings will serve as basis for the agency to clear or stop the mining proponent, Intex Resources Phils Inc, a Norwegian company. Intex's mining concession covers 11,216 hectares situated in the towns of Victoria, Pola and Socorro in Oriental Mindoro and in Sablayan in Ocidental Mindoro.

But Intex's environmental compliance certificate was revoked after residents said the project would defy a 25 year moratorium on mining, impair food production and destroy the Mangyans' ancestral domain.

Another group of Mangyan leaders, however, sought an audience with Atienza and claimed that they were the true representatives of the tribe found within the concession area of Intex. They also asked him to lift the suspension order citing the benefits the mining project had been giving to their community .

Both groups of Mangyans will be represented in the investigative team, along with representatives of Oriental and Occidental Mindoro, civil society and the department, Quinto said.

Meanwhile, a Zamboanga lawmaker blasted the defiant managers at the Environment department and called for disciplinary actions against them.

In a privilege speech delivered, representative Mr Antonio Cerilles, who served as Environment Secretary from 1998-2001, said that he supported the actions of Quinto in quelling a middle management revolt instigated by a few.
