How Long Will the Energy Stock Pullback Last?

    By Michael J. DesLauriers
    17 Aug 2005 at 06:23 PM EDT

TORONTO (ResourceInvestor.com) -- Over the last few months Resource Investor has written extensively on the subject of oil. Peak oil, energy stocks, the oil sands, the energy bill, natural gas prices...the list goes on. In terms of equities, the proportion of bulls to bears has shifted significantly, and things seem to have come to a head over the last week or so. After all, most investors are well aware of what happens when everyone is on the same side of the trade - who’s the greater fool? When the media starts comparing the moves in, for example, oil sands stocks to the tech bubble, something must be truly wrong.

For starters, oil sands stocks, for the most part, have solid fundamentals and, if already in production, are throwing off cash like crazy. These are real companies. But people are usually afraid of what they don’t understand, and many fund managers have no conception of valuation other than the never ending red-ink in the tech game. The truth is that while oil stocks may have been ahead of themselves in the short run, the move is only just getting underway. Although the pullback may still have a ways to go in order to bleed out the excesses of the year and re-balance profits and losses more appropriately, the smart money will be waiting for the next inevitable leg.

From its recent peak of 312.80 on 11 August, the TSX Energy Index is only down around 7% to 291.37 at today’s clos-e. It is important to note that the index started off 2005 all the way back at 200 and was 172, just 12 months ago - a very impressive move of over 80%!

Is the run over? Despite what some commentators might be saying on CNBC, the answer is clearly, no. After a move of that magnitude it would actually be unhealthy not to pullback and odds are this correction still has a ways to go, especially if oil prices correct as well. That said, long-term holders now in a loss situation don’t really have any reason for concern, although taking a loss and buying back a little lower in the coming weeks could well turn out to be a profitable course of action.

As Resource Investor readers may have noticed in today’s blog, George Soros “unloaded energy stocks in the quarter ended June 30.” Well, the famed Mr. Soros certainly left something on the table by getting out that early, but rest assured, he’ll be back. Today’s $3 drop in oil prices probably shook out a few additional weak, frightened hands, but oil would have to drop quite a bit more than that to derail this bull market. Despite rising inventories of crude, we’re still above $60 and nothing has really changed fundamentally.

The bottom line for investors in energy related stocks is that short-term corrections should be expected and even embraced as buying opportunities. That said, one must always seek the best entry or re-entry price possible and there is no sense in trying to catch a falling knife. When everyone starts saying that the oil-bubble has burst and the key indices have had a meaningful pullback relative to its massive run, it will be time to get back in. As a reasonable comparison, many of the big base metal stocks went through a similar purge back in April and May, only to march back to new highs. The comparison is valid because these stories also have great fundamentals and are making tonnes of money due to high commodity prices.

As Jesse Livermore once said, “Be right and sit tight.”

    Dann wären natürlich auch diese Werte betroffen;

    Sogar mit großem Hebel:

Bidding War for Deer Creek Energy Awakens Market

    By Gary Norris
    07 Sep 2005 at 01:39 AM EDT

TORONTO (CP) -- Shares in Alberta oilsands developer Deer Creek Energy Ltd. steamed up almost 30% Tuesday as traders speculated that a 24% increase in a takeover bid from French energy giant Total isn't the final word.

The move by Total E&P Canada Ltd. to raise its cash offer from C$25 per share to C$31 per share - a total of C$1.58 billion - came Friday after an unidentified rival topped its initial proposal.

Total had the right to meet any other offer, but many investors were betting that this wasn't the end of the bidding in the high-pressure market for oilsands assets, and they pushed Deer Creek shares [TSX: DCE] as high as C$32.38 on Tuesday with 6.9 million of the company's 50 million shares changing hands.

The stock - worth C$8 a year ago and C$18 just before Total presented its initial bid on Aug. 2 - never traded as low as C$31 during the session and ended the day at C$32.27, up C$7.35 or 29½% from its close Friday on the Toronto Stock Exchange before the sweetened bid was announced.

Deer Creek said its board supports Total's revised offer, and it earlier said 32.3% of its shares have been committed under lock-up agreements with Total.

The French company's bid, carrying a C$40-million break fee if Deer Creek accepts another offer, requires acceptance by holders of two-thirds of the stock.

Deer Creek's only material asset is an 84% working interest in the Joslyn lease, estimated to contain two billion barrels of recoverable bitumen on 200 square kilometres north of Fort McMurray, between lands held by Syncrude and Canadian Natural Resources.

The other 16% of the Joslyn project is owned by Enerplus Resources Fund [TSX:ERF.UN] through subsidiary EnerMark Inc.

Deer Creek has a four-phase plan to use steam-assisted gravity drainage to produce more than 200,000 barrels per day for at least 30 years.

The headlong development of multibillion-dollar projects in the oilsands has drawn increasing attention from major global energy companies.

Total already owns half of the C$1.4-billion Surmont steam-assisted oilsands project being built by Houston-based ConocoPhillips.

Meanwhile, another American company, Devon Energy, is building a similar steam-based project, and earlier this year two Chinese state-owned companies took stakes in small companies with oilsands leases.

Deer Creek's demonstration project at Joslyn, using injected steam to melt the sticky oilsands which then flow along horizontal wells into an open pit to be extracted, has been producing 280 barrels per day.

Construction is about one-third complete at a second-phase plant site, with C$29.3 invested during the April-June quarter.

Work has begun on the first of four well pads, each to house three to five pairs of injector and producer wells. Steaming of the reservoir is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2006 with initial production by mid-year.

Deer Creek, which held C$160 million in cash and short-term investments at June 30 after a C$40.8-million equity issue during the second quarter, reported a quarterly loss of C$498,000, leaving its accumulated deficit at C$15.9 million.

Alberta Oilsands Production Set to Double Within a Decade

    By Bill Graveland
    15 Sep 2005 at 08:00 AM EDT

CALGARY (CP) -- Production from Alberta's oilsands is expected to more than double over the next 10 years according to a forecast from the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board.

The board's report, released Thursday, outlines the 2004 levels of Alberta's oil and gas reserves and provides a supply/demand outlook for 2005-2014.

Continuing high levels of development in northern Alberta's oilsands resulted in last year's bitumen production increasing by 14% over 2003 levels and by 63% from the year 2000.

Bitumen is the tarry sand that contain large quantities of petroleum. Some companies use steam technology to melt the gluey bitumen deep below the surface before drawing it up and piping it to upgraders where it is later refined.

According to the energy board's report, annual bitumen production will more than double from the current 1.1 million barrels per day to 2.6 million barrels per day by 2014.

''We expect to see that number increase significantly over the next three to five years,'' said EUB spokesman Bob Curran.

Alberta has 1.6 billion barrels of remaining conventional oil reserves with 2004 production declining 5% from 2003 levels to 224 million barrels per day.

To put it into perspective, the oilsands are estimated to contain 174.1 billion barrels of bitumen reserves.

''The size of that reserve would put Canada in about second place in the world behind Saudi Arabia in terms of total oil reserves,'' said Curran.

''At current production rates, that's about 400 years of supply,'' he said.

The forecast for bitumen production closely mirrors figures from the Canadian Energy Research Institute. CERI is forecasting production to be 2.5 million barrels per day by 2014 said global energy analyst Vincent Lauerman.

The reason for the rapid expansion is more closely tied to record world oil prices than advances in technology, he said.

''Despite improving technologies, costs (of production) are going up to turn this stuff into usable product,'' said Lauerman.

''The cost is about C$30 per barrel and a year before it was about C$25 per barrel. The main thing that has changed that is driving this thing forward is light oil prices have increased quite a bit,'' he said.

Higher natural gas prices and higher costs for labour has added to production costs said Lauerman.

French Energy Giant Prepares for Oilsands Project
    By James Stevenson
    23 Sep 2005 at 07:14 AM EDT
CALGARY (CP) -- French energy giant Total [TSX:TOT] says its new oilsands development in northern Alberta could cost about $9 billion :], and the firm also plans to establish a conventional oil and gas business in Canada.

The pricetag includes the C$1.58 billion that Total is paying for oilsands junior Deer Creek Energy Ltd., as well as a new upgrader, major open-pit mine and smaller steam-assisted oilsands operations.

''We are here for the long term, and for the very long term,'' Christophe de Margerie, Total's president of exploration and production, said Friday at a news conference in Calgary.

''We don't have many countries with such longer-term fuels or more reserves.''

Total said it has also been looking for opportunities in Canada's so-called frontier regions, including the Mackenzie Delta in the Northwest Territories and off the East Coast, but has not yet found anything attractive enough to justify a move.

Total, the world's fourth-largest oil and gas company with operations in more than 130 countries, also said conventional natural gas production in the Western Canada sedimentary basin could be a way to hedge the potentially high gas costs needed for its oilsands development.

The takeover offer for Deer Creek [TSX: DCE] closes on Monday, Sept. 26, but the target company's managers have already resigned and handed over control to Total E&P Canada.

Deer Creek's main asset is an 86% stake in the Joslyn lease, about 60 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, Alta., which is estimated to contain about two billion barrels of recoverable bitumen.

The Joslyn lease in northern Alberta is sandwiched between lands held by oilsands heavyweight Syncrude Canada and Canadian Natural Resources' [TSX:CNQ; NYSE:CNQ] C$10-billion Horizon project, which is under construction.

Total already had a growing position in Canada's rapidly developing oilsands with a 50% stake in the Surmont oilsands project, operated by Houston-based ConocoPhillips [NYSE:COP].

But de Margerie said Friday his company is keen to expand its oilsands business with projects in which it has a majority ownership and is also the operator.

Total was also quick to play down recent reports that it planned to build a nuclear power plant in northern Alberta to power its oilsands operation.

De Margerie said there were only ''very early reflections'' on whether nuclear power is an option for the area, as prices for traditional fuels of natural gas and coal continue to rise.

''We don't have any serious idea of what nuclear can bring to this extraction of bitumen,'' he said. ''It's certainly not something that Total will work on - we're not experts in the nuclear industry.''
Total is the most recent major international energy company to increase its position in the Canadian oilsands, where reserves are estimated to be among the largest in the world.

Major American investments, and several small acquisitions by Chinese firms have occurred recently as companies the world over continue to search for new reserves as global supplies wane.

Teck Cominco CEO Says Company Eyeing More Oilsands Projects
    By Craig Wong
    26 Sep 2005 at 06:42 AM EDT

VANCOUVER (CP) -- Teck Cominco Ltd. [TSX:TEK.SVB] is looking at the possibility of moving into more oilsands projects, chief executive Don Lindsay said Monday.

Lindsay said the Canadian mining company was courted by five players in the oilsands before it announced a C$475-million deal for a 15% stake in the Fort Hills Energy project owned by Petro-Canada and UTS Energy Corp. earlier this month.

''We're still evaluating other opportunities and whether we do something sooner or later, it is really not clear,'' Lindsay told an investor conference Monday.

Teck Cominco had faced criticism over the deal from analysts who said the price was too high for the meagre stake in the project.

Under its deal, Petro-Canada agreed to pay C$900 million of the first C$1 billion spent on the project, which is expected to have a final cost of between C$4 billion and C$5 billion, for a 60% stake. Lindsay defended the decision on Monday.

''We're taking a fair bit of time at the beginning to set up the organization and make sure it has the right tone to it because we do want to bring a mining approach to these large projects and hopefully run it well,'' he said.

Teck Cominco would make an attractive partner to any oil company looking to develop an oilsands project because of the company's vast experience in open pit mining in freezing conditions.

The oilsands region in northern Alberta is currently the scene of unprecedented growth with a long list of new mega-projects and expansions slated for the next decade.

Newmont to move ahead with Alberta oil project
    Tue Sep 27, 2005 03:45 PM ET
DENVER, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Newmont Mining Corp. (NEM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) , the world's largest gold producer, will push ahead with an oil project in the Canadian province of Alberta that could eventually see production of 25,000 barrels per day, the managing director of Newmont Capital said on Tuesday.

In a lunch presentation at the Denver Gold Forum here, David Harquail said engineering reports indicated there could be 165 million barrels of oil in its lease area.

"Our project is economical at most oil price scenarios you look at going forward," Harquail said.

The company is looking at potentially filing permit applications in late 2006 with an eye toward a production start in 2009, Harquail said.

Though it is primarily a gold company, Newmont also has significant interests in coal and iron ore, which are managed by the Newmont Capital unit, along with a royalty portfolio and an investment in Canadian Oil Sands Trust (COS_u.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) .

Are Canada's oil sands the future?
    By Jon Nones
    06 Oct 2005 at 12:59 PM

According to an article by Kevin G. Hall in Knight Ridder Newspapers, “Canadian oil sands will help keep American SUVs running in the years to come.” Here are some highlights.

“In the north of the remote Alberta province rests the equivalent of 1.7 trillion barrels of oil. An estimated 176 billion barrels is recoverable with today's technology, and perhaps twice that amount is potentially recoverable. But this oil can't be pumped from the ground the conventional way. It's spread across more than 54,000 square miles, about the size of North Carolina, and is mixed with sand and clay.

“Canada already quietly has surpassed Saudi Arabia as the United States' largest foreign supplier of crude oil and petroleum products. The U.S. Energy Department believes foreign oil will account for as much as 72 percent of U.S. supplies by 2025.

“America consumes 20.7 million barrels a day, and of that about 12.1 million barrels are imports.

“Oil-sands operators are expected to produce this year more than 1.1 million barrels of oil a day, for the first time surpassing Canada's conventional oil production, which is forecast for 1 million barrels a day.

“By 2020, oil-sands operators and their partners will have invested more than $100 billion to make real what just a few years ago was dismissed as a pipe dream.

“Oil-sands production is projected to reach 2.3 million barrels of oil per day by 2010, 3.4 million barrels by 2015 and 5 million barrels by 2035.”
