Gold und Silber... Informationen und Vermutungen I

  • The Best Opportunity This Decade

By Jim Mueller February 12, 2008

Over the past 60 years, the United States has seen, and survived, 10 recessions (not counting the one we may or may not be in at present). From the shortest one of six months in 1980 to the two that spanned 1973-1975 and 1981-1982, we've muddled through and come out the other side. In between each, we've experienced, on average, almost five years of expansion.

So while we may be entering another recession right now, I'm excited!

Pardon me while I wipe my chin
First, we have a whole bunch of people running around in panic mode crying, "The sky is falling!" They don't want to hold stocks during a recession, so they're willing to sell them -- cheap.

Second, the news media fans the flames of panic with constant stories about weakening consumer spending and the specter of recession.

Third, we've got a handful of really hated companies. Specifically, I'm talking about the banks, thrifts, and builders that caused and are feeling the fallout from the mess we're in.

What does that add up to? Bargains.

Like a kid in a candy store ... and the candy's on sale
One option is an investment company -- like Goldman Sachs :D

  • A report from my fly on the wall

I just read of the Buffett "plan" to rescue the bond insurers. And immediately after absorbing it, I received a collect call from little flying friend, Hector, my fly on the wall who is privy to all of the highest level meetings. As you know, his reports have always been amazingly accurate. I wanted to give you the gist of what really happened last night to compel Mr. Buffett to come up with his incredibly magnanimous bail out.

Here is what really happened. Last night under the deepest secrecy, there was a extraordinary meeting at the highest level of America's financial giants. Although this report will be totally denied, my source told me that the group included Hank Paulson, Ben Bernancke, President Bush, and above all, Jim Cramer, Larry Kudlow and Maria Bartiromo. So you can tell by this list, it doesn't get any more prestigious than this.

For hours they mulled how they could bring a renewed confidence to the markets that for months have spooked the world. As might be expected, many creative ideas were tossed around. Mr. Paulson suggested that the chairman of Goldman Sachs might assume the presidency since Mr. Bush was a lame duck anyway, but they feared that this might take too long. Ben Bernancke suggested that the Fed could just declare that all of the mortgage problems forgiven. Everyone who could not meet their commitments would be just given their houses free and unencumbered plus an extra $50,000 to build a pool. In one bold stroke the value of houses would start to go up again and the mortgage problems would be over. This also was rejected because there were too many parties involved. What to do?

Jim Cramer who has been perhaps the most emotional about the current situation, and arguably the most creative financial person in the world, finally came up with the solution. Jim leaped to his feet, his sleeves fully rolled up, and shouted, "I've got it! 'Remember the scene in the "Godfather" where Michael tells Kay, his girlfriend, how his father was able to get the singer, Johnny Fontane, out of his contract with a famous bandleader. Remember? Vito told the bandleader that either his signature or his brains would be on the contract, and that was that. The offer was immediately accepted and Johnny was free.

Jim said, "Now here is my idea. Who in all the world has the greatest authority and reputation." Kudlow blurted out, "Vito Corteleone? But Brando is dead, I think."

Cramer replied, "Great thought, Larry," "but I was thinking of the very greatest living person." President Bush quickly offered, "Donald Rumsfeld!" But Jim said that it couldn't be someone associated with the administration although he had always been impressed with Rumsfeld's deft handling of the war.

Maria interjected, "You mean God." But Jim said, "Even bigger--Warren Buffett. If we can make Warren an offer he can't refuse, the Wall Street lemmings will believe that all of our problems are over, and more importantly, my picks will start to go up. I am down over 30% over the past 6 months although I always deny it."

Ben Bernancke said, "Jim, that is a stroke of genius." "But what about gold? Won't the Chinese and the others who have been buying physical gold, while we just sell them phony paper, see through this?" But Hank contributed his part, "I got it! 'Let's sell gold down this morning just as the announcement is made and buy the stock market futures. This always works. Anytime we have a special meeting, announcement or negative statistic, we come in and sell on the bid of gold to insure that we get the worst price. So-called gold bulls like Dennis Gartman who is always on CNBC will fall for it, will sell immediately and everyone else who thinks he knows what he is talking about, will follow. We'll deal with the derivative problem some other time. After all, who can ever understand them. They are so complicated, and besides, there will be a new administration in next year. By that time we'll all be out of here. Wouldn't it be great if we dumped this mess on a Clinton?"

The President as expected, asserted his leadership, "We have had a fantastic meeting. It brings back memories of when we were strategizing Iraq. Let's take a vote on this course." "Unanimous! Six to zero. That is unanimous, isn't it? I was never very good at math, just military strategy."

"Okay, who knows Warren Buffett? No one? Oh, just you, Maria? Could you please call him and tell him that Ben personally is going to make him an offer that he can't refuse? Outside of Alan Greenspan, Ben is the best Fed chairman that I have ever known. Ben, I think you are doing a fantastic job"

"Thanks for coming to this important meeting, and helping to keep our country the strongest economic nation in the world. By the way, if any of you needs a last second pardon before I retire, please let me know."

And, as they all shuffled out of the room, I heard Hank Paulson quietly ask Ben Bernacke, "Ben, where do you store all of your gold? I am very concerned about my strong box at Citigroup."

    Echt klass.

P.S.: lustiger Chuck Cohen Artikel :D

    ;)
