LONDON (8 May) Platinum hit a five-and-a-half-month high today due to a strike at SA’s Northam Platinum before slipping after a court ordered workers to end their protest.
The metal, used in jewellery and to clean vehicle exhaust fumes, was likely to remain supported ahead of an industry report due next week and growing interest in an exchange traded fund (ETF) based on physical platinum.
"With investor interest in the recently launched ETF steadily increasing and market fundamentals still extremely tight, the outlook for platinum remains very positive," said James Moore, precious metals analyst at TheBullionDesk.com.
Platinum rose to $1,340 an ounce, its highest since late November, before falling to $1,330/1,334 in afternoon trade, against $1,338/1,343 in New York late yesterday.
Northam said a court ordered workers to end a strike that has hit output and miners were likely to return to work by tonight.
The strike, which started on April 29, has so far resulted in lost output of 6,600 ounces of platinum group metals). Northam produced 180,623 ounces of PGMs in concentrates during the six months to end December from its sole operation.
London-based ETF Securities said on Friday its platinum, launched on April 24, had attracted 8,307 ounces of platinum worth $10,9m.
Traders said the market keenly awaited a report by precious metals refiner Johnson Matthey, due for release next Monday to mark the start of Platinum Week. "The platinum market is now slowly gearing towards the Platinum Week. Market observers expect this year a record number of participants. This is no doubt a result of the vastly increased interest in platinum group metals," Germany’s Heraeus said in a weekly research note.

Dann wirds erst mal spannend.
