    THE BANKERS’ NEW PLAN


    Last Saturday when the bankers realized they could no longer depend on government money to bail them out, they came up with a plan. Granted, they did so with only one night’s sleep but nonetheless there appears to be a significant flaw in their thinking.


    This is the plan:


    Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- A group of banks including Bank of America, CitiGroup and JPMorgan Chase & Co. are putting up $70 billion for a borrowing fund aimed at providing liquidity… Each participating financial firm will provide $7 billion to establish the fund and have the ability to borrow up to a third of the total. Other banks include Barclays Plc, Credit Suisse Group AG, Deutsche Bank AG, Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch & Co. and UBS AG. The pool could expand as other companies join.


    Now, let’s get this straight. Ten banks put up $7 billion for a total of $70 billion. Because any bank can withdraw up to $23.3 billion, if three banks take $23.3 billion each, there will be nothing left for the others. Am I missing something?


    There is nothing wrong with the plan, per se. The flaw lies in the flawed character of the participants. These are investment banks and if investment banks can exploit a situation, they will do so. That’s what investment banks do for a living, they exploit situations for their own advantage in order to maximize profits.


    Last year when two Bear Stearns highly leveraged funds were in danger of failing, Bear Stearns came to the “rescue” of one of its funds and lent it more capital, albeit with the caveat that Bear now had first claim on the fund’s assets. Then, when the fund collapsed shortly thereafter Bear Stearns exercised its now first-in-line rights to all the assets.


    Since self-serving behavior is common among investment bankers, it will be interesting to see how the bankers’ $70 billion fund will fare. After the first withdrawal, there may be a “bank run” on the remaining assets by the remaining banks—a real life version of what will be “the Banker’s Dilemma”. :thumbdown:

    Investing in these times is investing in a time of chaos; and gold and silver, traditional havens, appear to have failed in that role, both having sustained significant losses of late. But don’t dismiss gold and silver so quickly.


    Their day is coming. :thumbsup:


    The recent correction of gold and silver was not unexpected. In my book, I noted that in 2006 UBS had predicted a commodities sell-off—an avalanche sale of all commodities—could occur and take down gold in the process.


    Page 48, from How To Survive The Crisis And Prosper In The Process:


    In the June 5, 2006 article, UBS also warned that while the long term outlook for gold was decidedly positive, there was an intermediate risk of a global economic downturn that would drag “gold down in an avalanche sale of all commodities”; an avalanche that gold would ultimately survive before embarking again on a strong upward path.


    The global turndown predicted by UBS in 2006 is underway; and the current sell-off of commodities, an avalanche sale of all commodities, may well be the event predicted by UBS. That such is occurring means we are now entering what I call the third and final stage of economic-collapse.


    No one knows how long this stage will be. It is clear, however, from the recent takeovers of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and the collapse of Bear Stearns and Lehman Bros. that there has been a seismic shift recently in the global financial landscape.


    This stage is the last period in which investments can be profitably re-allocated to take advantage of what will soon happen, a financial tsunami the likes of which have never before been seen.


    A deflationary collapse with hyperinflation is only one possibility. There are more.

    EARLY UPDATE


    USERX = 11.72 yesterday, today UP about 5%?


    I am sending this little Update to everyone. Premium/Alert subscribers
    receive almost daily messages, including the 2 from the last two days
    that reported that Jeff was buying the down days and was done buying as
    of yesterday’s close. But in celebration of the great low, I am sending
    this to everyone. CONGRATS IF YOU BELIEVED AND EXECUTED, but you should
    have listened and sold with Jeff 14 times over the prior 2.5 years, no?


    Jeff is now overconfident (after being fearful) so I expect a down day
    or two after today. They say that “No one can time the market”. But we
    had a life run low! Yippee.


    Now hope/expect that the gold stocks go down tomorrow and give us
    another super bullish run pattern: The 1 Down (! on 9/15/08) and 2 Up
    SURGE (IF USERX rises at least 4% today AND IF USERX goes down
    tomorrow). We are likely to get a few days of down or mushing around
    after such a 1 Down and 2 Up run pattern, but nature was set on last
    week’s life run low for a massive several month rise. I am tempted to
    sell some at today’s close and re-buy on a down day tomorrow, but I am
    not an adroit short-term trader and YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO MESS AROUND
    WITH TRADING HERE. HOLD LONG. If USERX goes up again tomorrow
    (possible), we have a bullish 1 Down and 3 Up run pattern. IT’S ALL
    FREAKING BULLISH.


    You are now officially ALLOWED TO POST LIFE RUN LOW STATEMENTS ALL OVER THE FREAKING WORLD. I even delayed my free www.321gold.com
    article that was due this past Sunday in deference to the life run low.
    But all SKIers were supposed to be maximum long by yesterday and if
    not, you can still buy down days this week, so we can “let the cat out
    of the bag” and tell the world. Few will believe anyway.
    In
    conclusion, HOLD LONG, and if you still haven’t bought enough, pick a
    down day or two and buy, especially if you or Jeff experience some fear.

    aber die Argumente für den EM-Anstieg basieren auf der Geldpolitik der FED. Dann müßte der Tollar aber auch fallen - macht er aber nicht.
    Es ist immer noch nicht alles in trockenen Tüchern

    Es fliessen gerade Unmengen von Dollars zurück in die USA, was die relative Stärke gegen den € momentan trotz Riesenkrise und soeben eingestandener Monetisierung von US-Schatzanweisungen durch die Fed erklärt. Die ganzen mit Yen finanzierten Osteuropa-Investments befinden sich in panikhafter Auflösung und landen über den Umweg Tokio in US-Treasuries. Es geht dabei erstmal gar nicht mehr um irgendeine Rendite, sondern nur noch um heim ins Reich. Der Yen geht sowohl gegen Dollar als auch gegen € stark nach oben. Wer schon wieder traurig ist, dass ihm beim heutigen Goldorgasmus die Preise davongelaufen sind, muss eben kleinere Brötchen backen und dürfte mit dem Yen in nächster Zeit sehr gut fahren.

    Jetzt muss Gold nurnoch mal zurück zu ca. 790$, dann kanns wieder auf ca. 850$ gehen und fertig ist die umgekehre SKS Formation mit Kursziel 960$.
    Damit wäre Gold wieder im steileren, langfristigen Aufwärtstrend mit Start Anfang August 2007.

    Today one can cover their short positions in all major commodities as we expect there to be a bit of a rebound from the current level (gold at $786, silver $10.62). On other hand, I still see weakness in copper, platinum, gold and silver will bottom out today. Medium term planetary view is still not that encouraging so just cover your short positions and those who like to buy small quantities can.

    Grain, metals, energy and soft commodities are still in a bear market for medium term but we will buy them once the planetary movement gives 100% strong and safe signal. Until then just avoid or we will just do short term trading and my weekly newsletter as well as newflash will guide you.

    Dollar is doing well and we will witness a sideways trend in dollar for the next three trading sessions BUT LONG TERM BULL MARKET STORY IS INTACT. Commodities and currencies look weak. Our members made good money in their long positions in Japanese Yen and dollar against all the other currencies. We will get out fromthe Japanese Yen long position.

    One can cover short positions in gold and silver stocks. Buy JASO, SOLF, USU. HL, GMO, ESLR, LDK, HOKU, XSNX.

    On 16th July when I was on CNBC, a fall was predicted in oil and it was said that it would go down from $145; gold would go down from $970 and silver from $18.90. No one wanted to agree with this prediction because we were calling sharp corrections of more than 40% in oil and 30% in metals. Once again, the wave of nature theory has proven itself and has now become hard to ignore.

    was jetzt die YEN Investitionen im Ostblock mit dem EURO/DOLLAR Kurs zu tun haben musst du mir bei Gelegenheit auch mal erklären.


    Du sagst die Dollars fließen zurück. Aber eben das ist doch meiner Meinung nach genau das wovor alle Angst haben, das ist doch der Grund warum der Dollar noch da steht wo er ist, weil eben alle Dollars gekauft haben, wenn jetzt alle ihre Dollars abstoßen sähe es doch anders aus.


    Oder meinst du, das vermehrt Treasuries gekauft werden, aber warum, wenn sie doch direkt an die FED "verschenkt" werden?


    So ganz raff ich das nich.

    Stell Dir vor es ist Bank Run und keiner geht hin.

    I can’t help remembering Bob Hoye’s constant refrain that when the global economy runs into trouble, the senior currency gets stronger. Why so? Bob reasons that debt is really a “dollar short” position. When the debt has to be repaid, everyone scrambles to sell assets and buy dollars to answer the call of margin clerks. We would add to that factor the notion that America’s creditors would be mad as hell if the trillions of U.S. dollars we gave them in exchange for real goods turned toward their real intrinsic value of zero.
    So what we are faced with is a huge tug of war between the enormous forces of deflation on the one hand and Keynesian economics, or demand side economics, on the other. Were the U.S. not such a net debtor nation, it could more easily stimulate the economy with deficit spending. But with foreigners holding so many dollars, the U.S., which is already hated for our geopolitical posture by several important creditor nations, would find itself even more at odds with other growing powers on the world stage. Which way will the scales tip? We don’t know. But for now, as our IDW illustrates, we are heading toward a deflationary implosion. As such we are going to make some portfolio suggestions following our IDW update.

    Elli, wir hatten im alten Forum (im Herbst 2005) mal einen interessanten Thread: „Dreht der Dollar nach xx Jahren schon wieder nach oben?“ (wuzge). In diesem Thread ging es darum, dass – wie in o.g. Artikel – in einer weltweiten Rezession/Depression immer die älteste Währung der Welt (in diesem Fall der Dollar) steigt, weil diese die Währung mit den meisten Schuldverhältnissen ist etc. RD war mit von der Party und dottore gab eine abschließende Stellungnahme ab.


    Falls es dir nicht zu viele Umstände macht, wäre ich dir sehr verbunden, wenn du den Thread hier reinstellen könntest. Wäre nicht nur für mich, sondern auch für andere sehr aufschlussreich, zu erkannen, welche Kräfte den Dollar momentan bewegen. Herzlichen Dank im voraus!

    Noch nicht. Der Dollar verliert gerade massiv gegen den Yen, der € verliert ebenso gegen den Yen. Unwahrscheinlich ist aber, dass der Dollar angesichts der offenen Monetarisierung sich noch länger gegen den € so gut wie zuletzt wird behaupten können. Die Papierwährung der Stunde ist aber der Yen.


    Eine Lektion in Sachen Hartwährung kam heute aber von anderer Seite. Was mich freilich interessieren würde ist, ob die heutigen Marktbewegungen im Edelmatallbereich etwas mit den Positionen von Lehman und AIG in diesem Sektor zu tun haben. Wer dazu etwas weiss oder auch nur vermutet, wird höflich gebeten, sich dazu zu äussern.

    Gold ist eine Feder, die sprang nach oben, auf Dauer kann man Gold nicht druecken.


    Auch eine gute Gelegenheit fuer Elefanten wie BHP etc....und ich habe kein Moos. :wall:
