    Flight to quality may break more money funds

    A money manager advises that the ultimate flight to quality is under way, and he cannot find Treasury bills to buy. :thumbsup:


    He told me that he had to go out to December to find a T-bill that he could purchase with any yield at all, and that was well under one-tenth of a percentage point. The others, if they could be purchased at all, were available only for the amount they will be worth when they mature.


    What is going on here?


    I suspect there is a run on money market funds, or at least the ones that do not own only super-safe assets. With the money going into Treasury funds, they must find very-short-term Treasuries to buy.


    But that run may have more serious consequences. Many money funds own asset-backed commercial paper that they seem to have rolled over time and again. The assets backing the paper may be very hard to sell even close to par if the conduit that issued the paper cannot get alternative financing. If that paper is sold, the new market value could force other money market funds to break the buck, and away we go in another downward spiral.


    One way to halt that spiral could be for banks to take the funny paper as collateral for loans, and then pledge it at the Fed to secure loans. (The Fed has liberalized its lending rules.)


    And in the end, the government may end up owning a lot of very dubious paper.

    The world's central banks, already the biggest holders of gold, may look to the metal as an alternative reserve asset to the dollar, said Dennis Gartman, an economist and the editor of the Gartman Letter in Suffolk, Virginia. Until today, Gartman had been bearish in his outlook for gold.


    Venezuela said today it may buy 15 metric tons of gold a year to develop investment products, including coins. At a conference in London, Maria Ramona Gertrudes Santiago, the managing director of the treasury at the Phillipines Central Bank, called gold a ``perfect hedge.''

    Ach, immer der "Kontraindikator". Glaub ich weniger. Das ist so als wenn irgendwo Krieg ist- auch wenn man den am liebsten todschweigen möchte, ganz geht das eben nicht. Kostet die Auflage, denn die Leute wollen etwas drüber lesen. Wenn sie es in der BLÖD nicht finden, lesen sie woanders nach. Das will man vermeiden. Deshalb bringt man halt zähneknirschend einen Artikel, setzt ihn sogar auf die Titelseite. Aber wenn der verängstigte BLÖD-Leser dann den Artikel dazu liest, findet er den cool-down: DOCH NICHT IN DEUTSCHLAND, EUER ERSPARTES IST SICHER. Dann ist der Leser wieder beruhigt und fühlt sich kompetent informiert :thumbsup:

    Sept. 18 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan joined with their counterparts around the world to pump dollars into the financial system and head off a deepening crisis.


    The Fed said it authorized other central banks to auction $180 billion in dollar funds to financial institutions, in a statement on its Website. A joint release said that the Bank of England, the Bank of Canada and the Swiss National Bank also participated.


    ``The action is designed to address the continued elevated pressures in U.S. dollar short-term funding markets,'' the banks said. ``The central banks continue to work together closely and will take appropriate steps to address the ongoing pressures.''


    Central bankers have struggled to restore confidence in markets this week as banks hoarded money on concern more banks will follow Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. into bankruptcy. The cost of borrowing in dollars for three months jumped the most since 1999 with the crisis spreading abroad as U.K. mortgage lender HBOS Plc slumped and Russia poured money into its banks.

    "für die Zeit danach" ein paar Ölaktien scheint mir grade angesagt!


    Im Fall einer Weltwirtschaftskrise werden Ölaktien zunächst ins bodenlose stürzen und erst nach der Krise wieder steigen. Sicher ist das noch keineswegs, aber ziemlich riskant und mit begrenzten Gewinnaussichten.

    Das würde ich nicht empfehlen. Das käme einer Wette gleich, bei der man 100% auf den Crash den Finanzsystems setzt. Niemals 100% auf ein Szenario wetten. Nie!

    Ich glaube seit ein paar Tagen nur noch zu 30% an einen Totalausfall. Zuvor hat man alles unterlassen, um die Krise schnell zu beheben, da man die Kosten gescheut hat. Seit Fannie und Freddie aber hat man in den USA erkannt, dass das System kurz vor dem Zusammenbruch steht und man hat seitdem sehr überlegt gehandelt. Die Zinsen wurden nicht gesenkt, Lehman durfte Pleite gehen, Merrill und HBOS wurden schnell und unkompliziert verkauft, Freddie und Fannie wurden vom Staat übernommen, genauso auch AIG und letztlich wurde "naked shortselling" für alle Aktien untersagt. Zudem funktioniert der Markt auch wieder, so dass in so einem Umfeld Gold steigt (steigen darf) und der Dow 450 Punkte verliert.


    Ich kann nur jedem raten sich nicht auf ein einziges Szenario festzulegen (und wenn man falsch liegt damit unterzugehen), sondern sich für mehrere vorzubereiten.
