    (hier erwerbbar: https://www.researchandmarkets…+2030F&utm_exec=chdo54prd)

Global climate objectives fall short without nuclear power in the mix: UNECE

The urgent need to reduce emissions and slow global heating, should involve the roll-out of more nuclear power stations, regional UN energy experts argued in a new briefing on Wednesday.

Only weeks before world leaders gather in Glasgow to hammer out plans to slow climate change, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has released a document arguing that nuclear power can help deliver on the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
“Nuclear power is an important source of low-carbon electricity and heat that can contribute to attaining carbon neutrality and hence help to mitigate climate change,” UNECE Executive Secretary Olga Algayerova said.
In the new technology brief published on Wednesday, the agency warned that “time is running out to rapidly transform the global energy system,” as fossil fuels still account for over half of electricity generation in the UNECE region, which include the countries of Europe, but also countries in North America, Central Asia and Western Asia.
The report highlights how only hydropower has played a greater role in avoiding carbon emissions over the past 50 years.
Nuclear power is a low-carbon energy source that has avoided about 74Gt of CO2 emissions over this period, nearly two years’ worth of total global energy-related emissions, it noted.
Yet nuclear power currently provides 20 per cent of electricity generated in the UNECE region and 43 per cent of low-carbon generation.

  • AJ100 practice Bryden Wood has revealed plans to repurpose the world’s coal-fired power stations to house modular nuclear reactors as part of a ‘major initiative’ to decarbonise the energy sector

The practice's Repurposing Coal proposal has been drawn up with Terra Praxis, a non-profit organisation focused on action for climate and energy.
Unveiled at COP26 this week, the strategy sets out how coal-fired boilers at existing power plants could be replaced with Advanced Heat Sources (Generation IV Advanced Modular Reactors) to deliver a substantial portion of the clean electricity required to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Bryden Wood, which was again recognised in the AJ100 Best Use of Technology category this year, has created ‘a platform solution’ making these conversions possible at scale and speed by transforming how projects of this kind are financed, designed, approved and delivered.

Kenya’s first nuclear power plant is scheduled to go live in 2036 according to Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA).
The agency anticipates that the first nuclear reactor will be constructed along the Kenya coastline due to availability of water and space.
NuPEA Director of Nuclear Energy Infrastructure Development Eng. Eric Ohaga says small modular plants will generate between 50 and 270 megawatts of nuclear energy.
Kenya has been toying with the idea of setting up the second nuclear power plant in Africa for the last two decade.
“As a country we have developed a roadmap of the development of a nuclear power plant in this country so that we are able to provide reliable, adequate and cost effective power to this nation in order to drive Vision 2030 agenda item,” Ohaga said.
The original plan was to commission a 1,000 megawatts plants by December 2020, a time frame that the country missed.

  • @Minehunter
bitte companys und news zu diesen in den ANDEREN thread - Uranaktien: Minen, Explorer, Produzenten, Anwender - danke!

Rosenergoatom has agreed to partner with Russia's biggest steelmaker, NLMK, on clean power supply, including potentially the supply of nuclear energy to new facilities at the huge Stoilensky mining and processing site. "Increasing the share of low-carbon energy sources is one of NLMK Group’s priority initiatives," the company said. "Nuclear energy is one of the main decarbonisation tools, currently accounting for a third of global low-carbon electricity production," it added.

NLMK lists "Minimisation of environmental footprint, including a reduction of specific emissions per tonne of steel ... to the level of the best available EU technologies" among its goals.
Rosenergoatom already has agreements to supply over 3 TWh of clean electricity to NLMK this year, which is equivalent to about 380 MW of nuclear generation at a 90% capacity factor. The partnership agreement the companies announced on 12 November could see this increase when new facilities at Stoilensky start production in 2027 or 2028, the companies said.
Rosenergoatom's deal with NLMK also includes an aspect of demand management in which large electricity consumers are paid a premium to reduce their demand during times of peak demand. "The absolute values across the country are very modest," said Rosenergoatom's Deputy General Director and Sales Director, Alexander Khvalko. "However, the demand for this service is growing at a good pace. During this year we have increased the total unloading capacity from 5 to 100 MW."
“Rosenergoatom intends to continue to cooperate with industrial consumers within the framework of free contracts, supplying them with low-carbon electricity produced at nuclear power plants." said Khvalko. "This service is becoming more and more popular," he added. "This year alone, Rosenergoatom has signed free contracts for the amount of about RUB5 billion (USD69 million)."
Stoilensky is a large iron ore extraction and processing site in the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine. It produces about 18% of Russia's iron ore in the form of concentrates, sinter ore and iron ore pellets to the value of around RUB52.7 billion per year. It employs 5900 people.
The World Steel Association (WSA) recently named NLMK a 'Sustainability Champion', which means the association considers NLMK has proven its commitment to the principles of sustainable development. In 2020, NLMK Group also joined Step Up, the WSA's decarbonisation programme, which aims to reduce the industry’s environmental impact, and prepared data on the life cycle of the resources it uses in the production process.

    Uranium Week: Australia’s Nuclear Opportunity

    By Mark Woodruff
One of the key architects behind Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s gas-led recovery plan suggests nuclear energy represents a strategic regional opportunity for Australia.
Andrew Liveris, the former Chief Executive of Dow Chemicals, believes the country needs to overcome concerns about nuclear energy and instead see its potential to reduce carbon emissions.
Liveris notes small scale reactors are “more proven” than the use of large scale batteries to store renewable energy and suggests Australia should repurpose its ageing coal power plant fleet with nuclear technology.
Liveris suggestion is a carbon price of between US$40 and US$80/tonne should be set by the government to incentivise business to wind back carbon emitting operations. Europe has had a carbon price for 16 years while California has a working model.
These comments come after recent significant announcements on nuclear from China, which plans to build some 150 new reactors in the next 15 years as part of its emissions reduction plans.
France also intends to construct new reactors as the basis for a re-industrialised and low-carbon economy, while the UK has recently introduced new funding for large reactors and funded the commercialisation of small reactors.
Following an equity raise, UK-based Rolls-Royce has announced the Rolls-Royce Small Modular Reactor (SMR) business has been established to advance and deliver the next generation of low-cost, low-carbon nuclear power technology.
If approved for use in the UK, Rolls-Royce SMR could reportedly build up to16 reactors across the country for as early as the 2030s.

  • Office of Nuclear Energy Next-Gen Nuclear Plant and Jobs Are Coming to Wyoming

    Updated 11/16/2021
TerraPower recently announced plans to build its Natrium reactor at a retiring coal plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming. This is an incredible opportunity for the state, which currently generates almost 90% of its electricity generation from fossil fuels. The Natrium design represents the future of advanced nuclear reactor technology and is well-suited to provide clean and efficient power to communities across the United States, including the Mountain West.
The U.S. Department of Energy is extremely excited about this project and plans to invest nearly $2 billion to support the licensing, construction and demonstration of this first-of-a-kind reactor by 2028.
The Natrium project will create thousands of construction jobs and
hundreds of permanent jobs once the plant is online. It will not only
leverage the existing energy infrastructure already in place at the coal
plant but also the local power plant workforce who can work with
utilities to transition or apply their skills to higher paying jobs in nuclear energy.

    ...
    ..
    .
    What’s Next?
TerraPower is currently working on a construction permit application for submittal to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The team will also further develop its plant design and initiate long-lead procurements.
The company hopes to begin early construction activities by 2024.

US President Joe Biden yesterday signed into law the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal). The USD1.2 trillion package is a key part of the president's Build Back Better agenda and contains a total of more than USD62 billion for the US Department of Energy (DOE) to deliver a "more equitable clean energy future", including preventing the premature retirement of existing nuclear plants and investing in advanced nuclear projects.

The bill, described by the White House as a "once-in-a-generation investment in our nation's infrastructure and competitiveness," was passed by the Senate in August and by the House of Representatives earlier this month. Amongst other things, it allocates USD6 billion to prevent premature retirement of existing zero-carbon nuclear plants. This funding, through the Civilian Nuclear Credit programme, will be available to plants that would otherwise retire and are certified as safe to continue operations and prioritises plants that use domestically produced fuel, the DOE said.
"Our nation already gets 27% of its power from decades-old nuclear and hydropower facilities. These are critical sources of clean power - but as they get older and more expensive to maintain, we risk losing these major sources of pollution-free energy and good-paying jobs. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal provides funding to ensure that we can keep these clean energy sources online," the DOE said.
The deal also provides some USD21.5 billion in funding for clean energy demonstrations and research hubs focused on the next generation technologies needed to help achieve the USA's goal of reaching net-zero by 2050. The vast majority of this is earmarked for clean hydrogen (USD8 billion) and carbon capture, direct air capture and industrial emission reduction (more than USD10 billion), with USD2.5 billion earmarked for advanced nuclear through the DOE's Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ADRP).

Credit: FAN Qiaohui Chinese researchers from the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environmental Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have systematically studied the enrichment behavior of radioactive element U(VI) on kaolinite- and illite-Aspergillus niger composites, and clarified the regulatory pathways and mechanisms of Aspergillus niger on the sorption behavior of U(VI) on both kaolinite and illite.
This study is of great practical significance to carry out research on the sorption mechanism of uranium on microorganism-clay mineral composites, which helps to reflect the environmental behaviors of uranium accurately.
It is well known that uranium (U) is a kind of radionuclide with chemical toxicity. Once entering the soil system, it will inevitably undergo physical, chemical and biological effects, which is extremely important to the geochemical behaviors of U.
In this study, the researchers found that under different pH conditions, the sorption mechanism of U(VI) on kaolinite and illite is mainly attributed to ion exchange, outer-sphere complexes (OSCs), and inner-sphere complexes (ISCs).
Aspergillus niger could obviously change the charge density, sorption sites and other physical and chemical properties of illite and kaolinite to a certain extent, thereby promoting the sorption of U(VI).
At the same time, the sorption mechanism of U(VI) on the surface of the clay- Aspergillus niger composites could be only attributed to the ISCs. It showed that the sorption process of U(VI) on the bio-composites is significantly different from clay minerals.
The study also showed that U(VI) mainly complexed with the phosphate group, amide group and carboxyl group derived from the biomass of Aspergillus niger in the bio-composites, which further weakened the effect of ion exchange and complexation with Si-OH and Al-OH on illite and kaolinite.
Besides, according to the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, U(VI) was partly reduced to non-crystalline U(IV) by Aspergillus niger in the bio-composites.
The findings further clarify the geochemical process of U(VI) in a complicated environmental system, and provid an important theoretical basis for accurately assessing and predicting the environmental behavior of uranium.
This research has been published in Chemosphere in an article entitled "New insights into the sorption of U(VI) on kaolinite and illite in the presence of Aspergillus niger."
