Chile’s constituent assembly, in charge of writing the country’s new Constitution, approved on Saturday an early-stage proposal that opens the door to nationalizing some of the world’s biggest copper and lithium mines.

The motion by the environmental committee, which gathered over the weekend for the first time since its creation as a deadline to wrap up proposals looms, received 13 votes in favour with three against and three abstentions.

The proposal, targeting mostly large-scale mining of copper, lithium and gold has yet to be approved by two thirds of the full assembly to become part of Chile’s new charter, which will be put to a national referendum later this year.

  • :!: uffbasse
Moscow says firms' foreign-listed depositary receipts will be forced to return to Russia

  • Western Australia is world’s new top mining destination

    https://www.mining.com/western…w-top-mining-destination/
Resource-rich Western Australia has been picked the most attractive region for mining investment in 2021, replacing the US state of Nevada, which fell to the third place in the latest annual survey of mining companies released by think-tank the Fraser Institute.

Canada’s Saskatchewan is still on the podium, climbing from a third place overall in 2020 to a second position in the 2021 index, which takes both mineral and policy perception into consideration.

  • Mexico nationalisiert Lithium
AMLO celebrates reform approval of Mining Law
    https://www.riviera-maya-news.…V21nmJ57KYA&cn-reloaded=1
Mexico City, Mexico — After one vote was deemed a failure, another was hailed a success. On Tuesday, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) celebrated the Mining Law reform approval by the Chamber of Deputies.
On April 18, deputies approved the initiative sent by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador known as the Mining Law which seeks to protect the exploitation of lithium.
The approved reform will modify Articles 1, 5, 9 and 10 of the Mining Law. The core of the proposal consists of declaring the exploitation, exploration and use of lithium as “public utility, for which no concessions will be granted, licenses, contracts, permits, assignments or authorizations in the matter. Those in which there are lithium deposits will be considered mining reserve areas.”
The initiative to reform the Mining Law proposes creating a decentralized public body responsible for everything related to the exploration, exploitation and use of lithium.
This body will have legal personality and its own assets, and will be responsible for managing and controlling the economic value chains of lithium. The Mexican Geological Service will help that body “in the location and recognition of the geological areas in which there are probable reserves” of the mineral.
